When thinking of the best titles in the Pokémon franchise, older fans will often point to Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal as top-tier games. The sequel to the smashing success of Red and Blue nearly doubled the size of the world and the roster of catch-able critters. While some may argue that Johto's designs are lacking in originality, as an expansion to the original roster they blend in perfectly.

The remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver are even more fondly remembered, with all of the great changes made in Gen IV in addition to the classic content. This includes expansions to the personalities of the gym leaders of the original. With expanded PokéGear conversations and slightly expanded dialogue, the Gen II trainers come to life. And for those who are struggling to pick a favorite, here's an interpretation based on the stars.

12 Aries - Lance

Lance, the champion of the Indigo League, is obviously strong. Formerly just an elite four member, he battled up the ranks and proved the power of his dragon-type Pokémon. However, he plays a role outside of just waiting atop the Indigo Plateau; Lance assists the player a few times during the game. He quickly jumps in to take down Team Rocket in their hideout of Mahogany Town, along with helping maintain disaster in the Lake of Rage. He isn't necessarily aggressive, but his battle style definitely brings the heat. The confident, assertive, and courageous Aries will find a friend in this dragon tamer.

11 Taurus - Falkner

Falkner, the flying-type gym leader of Violet City, is a very face-up personality. He loves two things: bird Pokémon, and his dad. Even better, he uses his dad's beloved bird Pokémon to challenge trainers in his gym. However, despite his high-flying combat, he's very down-to-Earth as a person. He may not be the most dynamic of personalities, but he still has some flavor to him. In fact, he's even a bit antagonistic toward fellow gym leader Janine. The rock-steady bird expert has more in common with a Taurus than any Air sign.

10 Gemini - Bugsy

Bugsy, the bug-type gym leader of Azalea Town, is a certified genius. Well, sort of. His youth is no barrier to his research, becoming one of the best bug catchers and bug-type experts in Johto. However, he's hardly deadset in his ways. When defeated, he acknowledges that he has a lot to learn and takes plenty away from the battle. He's a young explorer as well, although he prefers sticking to the Ilex Forest nearby. This gentle genius is both sociable and intellectual, which resonates well with the Gemini.

9 Cancer - Koga

Koga, one of the Elite Four of the Indigo League, certainly got a grand promotion. Since the events of Red and Blue, he moved up and had his beloved daughter replace him in Fuchsia City. However, this poison-type ninja hardly changes his attitude or fighting style. For him, the name of the game is deception. Anyone who has tried to battle him and his Minimize spam perhaps has thought about eating their game cartridge in frustration. However, Koga is still devoted to his family and his craft above all else. This master ninja's tactics likely make any Cancers take note on what to do in future battles.

8 Leo - Clair

Clair, the dragon-type gym leader of Blackthorn City, is bold, brash, and definitely not trash. She has plenty of strength with with dragon-type Pokémon, like her cousin Lance. She uses this power to its fullest as the final gym leader for those going on a Johto journey. She loves to flaunt her strength and her fashion, having a bit of an ego.

However, this strength also leads to arrogance, and in defeat Clair requests the trainer go through an additional trial. This is purely just because she hates to lose. In this way, she's not much different from Whitney. The showstopping dragon tamer exudes plenty of energy that Leos will find comforting.

7 Virgo - Red

Red is a quiet lad. After he defeated Team Rocket and became champion of the Kanto region, he decided to focus on himself more than helping others. While Blue became a gym leader, Red decided to stay out of the spotlight. He devoted himself to training and his catching mission. He's become more of a friend with Blue, but doesn't have many other non-Pokémon friends. His battle expertise is unmatched, and he's the true final boss waiting atop Mt. Silver. The quiet, hardworking, and strong Red is an excellent representative of the Virgo.

6 Libra - Karen

Karen, another elite four member, might appear prideful, but she isn't a total show-off. In reality, she's more elegant than aggressive. Karen prefers the powerful dark-type Pokémon, but understands there's more to battles than raw strength. She admires the perfect balance between trainer and Pokémon in battling. To her, there is no such thing as a strong or weak Pokémon. A truly skilled trainer will win with whatever Pokémon is their favorite. This fair and balanced mindset is one that any Libra will appreciate.

5 Scorpio - Silver

Although Silver, the rival, comes across as aggressive and unreasonable, he's a gentle soul deep down. He hates weakness, deception, and dishonesty. That's part of the reason he despises Team Rocket; to him, they're weaklings who gang up on people. He also resents the player not for their strength, but passivity. His trust issues aren't a bad thing either, they're just a part of who he is. Given enough time, he likely would be a great friend to anyone who warms up to him. The sensitive soul of Silver certainly speaks to the Scorpio.

4 Sagittarius - Chuck

Chuck, the fighting-type gym leader of Cianwood City, is a simple man. He loves to train, he loves to fight, and he loves his wife. He's focused on shaping his body to be the best it can be. Yet, he also loves to eat sweets and doesn't block himself off from new experiences.

He often says he'll push himself to beyond his own limits, but he doesn't meet those promises. He has a strong heart and believes the best of people and himself. Chuck may not be complex, but his free-spirited nature will be something a Sagittarius could resonate with.

3 Capricorn - Morty

Morty, the ghost-type gym leader of Ecruteak City, is a very relaxed person. He's interested in ancient legends, particularly that of the Legendary Beasts and the Bell Tower. These traditions mean a lot to him. He's also incredibly smart and tactical in battle, both in the anime and the games. In fact, he may think himself smarter than others and underestimate them. Still, he's a responsible and reliable person, disciplined as a gym leader. Morty's love of legends and tradition is something the Capricorn can relate to.

2 Aquarius - Ethan/Kris

The protagonists, Ethan and Kris, both share similar enough traits that they exist in the same entry. They may not be emotional people, but they are still in touch with the world and its problems. They have many elements of great trainers: strong problem solving, a will to fight, and a sociable personality. Granted, they aren't great with words, but they don't need to say much. They certainly break through the limitations of the previous title by going beyond their own region, something Pokémon games today still haven't been able to do. The intelligent and humanitarian protagonists have an energy that an Aquarius would gel with.

1 Pisces - Jasmine

Jasmine, the steel-type gym leader of Olivine City, is a quiet and reserved person. She's compassionate towards her Pokemon, taking care of the lighthouse's Ampharos on her own. However, she also shows a bit of a silly side when she's talking about her steel-type partners. She may not really like talking to people, but she still enjoys their company every now and then. She's even willing to initiate conversation at times. However, her main focus is always on being caring and gentle to her Pokémon partners. Jasmine's attitude and actions are things that a Pisces may find admirable.
