The Gen VI starters, as well as a handful of other monsters not yet available in Pokémon GO, have popped up in artwork celebrating the game's fourth birthday.

It has been four years since Pokémon GO was first unleashed on the world. A lot has changed since then. That summer, parks were filled with people playing Pokémon GO. This summer, Niantic has tweaked as much as it possibly can about the game so that players are able to play it from home and while social distancing.

It feels as if there is more going on in Pokémon GO right now than there has ever been before, and we appreciate that. However, no matter how many events Niantic stages, there will always be one question on the tip of trainers' tongues. When will more Pokémon be added to the game? Ever since Pokémon GO launched, the release of generations has been gradual.

As much as that might annoy some players, that's a good thing. It's why Pokémon GO remains as popular as it is today four months in. Nevertheless, the drip-feeding of new Pokémon into the game continues, and this week, trainers got their first inkling that Gen VI is on the way. The Gen VI starters can be seen in the artwork below which was released to celebrate Pokémon GO's fourth birthday.

Chespin and Froakie are featured front and center, but fire-type Fennekin was a little harder to pick out. It's hidden among the Pikachu balloons on the right-hand side of the pic. The Gen VI starters aren't the only Pokémon in the picture not to have featured in Pokémon GO yet. Victini and Whimsicott, as well as a first look at what Mega Evolutions might look like in the game, can also be seen.

Since the picture was created to celebrate Pokémon GO's birthday, there's a chance the trio arrives in-game very soon. However, trainers shouldn't get their hopes up just yet. The arrival of Gen V's starters was teased in a similar way this time last year, but they didn't end up arriving until September. Don't expect Niantic to finish up adding every Pokémon from the Unova region either. The developer has already proved it doesn't care about doing things in order.
