Pokémon GO might be coming out with an armored Mewtwo before Sword & Shield does.
Last month, a leaker who predicted the name of the next generation of Pokémon games made another prediction: that the next big thing in Pokémon would be armored ‘Mons. We’re not sure if that would mean armored evolutions in the same way as Mega Evolutions or if they’d just spend half-an-hour strapping a set of full-plate on before battle, but armored Pokémon we’re coming.
It was just a rumor though, with very little to back it up other than past success. Now we might have our first clue that this leaker was right thanks to a data miner for Pokémon GO.
According to renowned Pokémon GO data miner Chrales, the most recent version of the game has new forms for Mewtwo labeled “MEWTWO_A, MEWTWO_A_INTRO,” and “MEWTWO_NORMAL.”
However, before we take the letter “A” to be confirmation that an armored Mewtwo is just around the corner, we should note there is another possibility. Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions from Pokémon X & Y that could very well be the alternate forms mentioned. Mewtwo X is a Psychic/Fighting-type with a lot of attack, while Mewtwo Y is a pure Psychic-type with more special attack than god (which is Arceus in the Pokémon world).
Or it could be that Pokémon GO will receive armored Mewtwo even before Sword & Shield comes out later this year. It wouldn’t be the first time that Pokémon GO has been used for larger franchise tie-ins: Meltan arrived in GO before its debut in the non-mobile Pokémon games, Let’s Go Pikachu & Eevee.
Along with Mewtwo, it's rumored that Charizard, Flygon, and Zeraora, will also get the armored treatment, whatever that turns out to be. We suspect it’ll be similar to Mega Evolutions, only more fitting with the whole British Empire theme of Sword & Shield.
We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Niantic before we can say for sure which way these alternate Mewtwo forms will go. Until then, we’ve got plenty of rumors to speculate on and plenty of armored Mewtwo fan art to fawn over.
