Pokémon GO’s next Community Day is undergoing a controversial change that has some people up in arms.

Every month, Pokémon GO players from around the world all stopped what they were doing and ran outside to catch very special little monsters for a few hours on a single day. The idea was to create a sense of community (hence the name) and also give die-hard players a bit of a reward for dropping everything to go outside and hunt some virtual ‘Mons.

However, Community Day had a bit of a problem: it lasted for three hours and it was always at the same time no matter where you were in the world. This means if Community Day lasted from 2-5 PM Eastern Standard Time, then it was 4-7 AM in Tokyo, or it was 8-11 PM in Berlin--not exactly the most ideal times for kids to run around outside and play.

So Niantic decided to change things starting in March, For March’s Community Day, the start of the three-hour window will begin at 3 PM in each individual timezone. This means no more late night or early morning Pokémon hunting sessions if you live in Asia, Africa, or Europe.

But not everyone is cool with the change in times. The Pokémon GO subreddit is awash with players saying they can no longer participate as their work or school hours conflict with the 3-6 PM window. Others are complaining that younger children can’t participate at those hours as their parents have to take them home and cook dinner within that time frame.

Still, the bulk of the responses tend to be in favor of the move. However, with every time zone starting Community Day at different relative times, it’s now technically possible for a person to travel from timezone to time zone and experience a full 24-hour Community Day--or location spoofers could do it without the frequent flyer miles

March’s Pokémon GO Community Day will feature increase spawn rates of Treecko with each one having a special new move. Grovyles that have yet to evolve to Sceptile will also have a chance to learn the move so long as they evolve during the 3-hour Community Day window.

As with previous Community Days, 3-hour Lures will be available as well as reduced hatching distances to crack open an egg.
