Niantic has issued a statement letting Pokemon Go players know its aware some people are having issues evolving Inkay and that it's working on a fix.

Niantic continued the gradual addition of Pokemon to Pokemon Go this month when it added Inkay and its evolved form, Malamar. It even managed to incorporate the unique method needed to evolve Inkay that was first introduced via Pokemon X & Y. Since then, players have needed to flip their consoles, or in Pokemon Go's case their devices, upside down to trigger Inkay's evolution.

The gyroscope in the consoles and devices senses it is upside down and if the right level has been reached, or enough candies have been earned, Inkay will evolve into Malamar. However, it was quickly discovered by Pokemon Go players unable to trigger that evolution that not all smartphones have a gyroscope.

That means for some, Malamar has been unattainable. Niantic has now addressed that issue and revealed it is working on a fix. “We're aware that devices that do not feature gyroscopes do not support Inkay's unique evolution method,” Niantic tweeted. “We will be implementing a fix in release (0.221) that will offer affected Trainers an alternate method to evolve Inkay into Malamar.” What that fix will be and when the update will go live is yet to be revealed.

Pokemon Go is obviously a very different Pokemon game from anything else in the franchise. That makes lifting some mechanics and features players are familiar with from the main series very difficult. The reveal that Inkay's evolution would be one of the mechanics to successfully make the jump was a welcome surprise. It's a shame that it hasn't worked out as planned, but at least those stuck with an Inkay and a whole lot of Inkay candies will soon be able to get a Malamar or two.

The world of Pokemon Go is always a very busy one, hence its ongoing popularity five years on from its initial launch. The mobile game will feature some sort of crossover later this year with Secrets of the Jungle, the 23rd Pokemon movie that will hit Netflix in early October. Today also marks the beginning of Pokemon Go's Fashion Week which includes sweepstakes featuring prizes for some of the best photos.
