We’re back once again with another Pokemon Go evolution guide, and this time we’re focusing on the Pokemon that evolve using rare and unique items. As you probably are fully aware, most of the Pokemon evolutions in Pokemon Go are based on the ways that those Pokemon evolve in the main game - no shocks thus far. But what you might not know is how the evolution methods and Pokemon in question may differ from the mainline games - there it is, a shock!

In this guide we’re going to break down everything you need to know about the various evolutionary items you can collect and use in Pokemon Go. Some of them are only good for evolving a single Pokemon, while others are incredibly valuable and can be used for multiple Pokemon - on top of being very rare and difficult to obtain. We’re going to go through the special items one by one so you know exactly how to evolve Pokemon and what the items clogging up your bag are good for in Pokemon Go.

Updated on July 10, 2022, by Gabrielle Huston: Pokemon Go is often being updated with new generations of Pokemon, new events, and more! Thus, it only made sense to revisit this article and make sure that you were kept informed of all the Pokemon that require an item to evolve.

Dragon Scale Evolutions

  • Seadra > Kingdra

This is another item that only has one evolution to be paired up with, so your choices are limited, but it’s worth it. Seadra evolves into Kingdra, which gives it a Dragon-type.

Plus, Kingdra looks cool as hell. Though it feels like they could’ve found a better Pokemon to use a Dragon Scale, honestly.

King’s Rock Evolutions

Pokemon That Evolve With A King's Rock

  • Slowpoke > Slowking
  • Poliwhirl > Politoed

The King’s Rock was introduced in the second generation of Pokemon, and was specifically made to introduce alternate evolutions to two of the Pokemon from the Kanto region.

If you’ve stacked enough candy and have a King’s Rock, it should be simple to evolve Slowpoke or Poliwhirl into their new forms.

Sinnoh Stone Evolutions

Fairy Type Pokemon Togekiss

Sinnoh Stones evolve a lot more Pokemon than any other item, so we have a guide dedicated to it specifically! Check it out here:

Since there are so many Pokemon that use a Sinnoh Stone to evolve, you may find yourself in need of some extras! Learn how to get them here:

Metal Coat Evolutions

Pokemon: Scizor in the center with rocks surrounding him in the Pokemon Anime.

Pokemon That Evolve With A Metal Coat

  • Onix > Steelix
  • Scyther > Scizor

You can think of the Metal Coat as a kind of buff for metal Pokemon. If you're looking to clear out some space in your inventory, trashing some Metal Coats is a good option. Onix and Steelix are surprisingly underwhelming.

However, the other Pokemon that evolves with Metal Coat is worth it. Getting enough Scyther candy can be a tough task, but if you can do it, Scizor is a valuable Pokemon to have.

Sun Stone Evolutions

Pokemon That Evolve With A Sun Stone

  • Gloom > Bellossom
  • Sunkern > Sunflora
  • Cottonee > Whimsicott
  • Petilil > Lilligant
  • Helioptile > Heliolisk

The Sun Stone is one of the items on this list that's actually required to upgrade a significant number of Pokemon! We don't recommend tossing this one out for a little extra inventory space.

Many of these are fan-favorites; most of them are cute, flowery Pokemon that require sunlight to thrive. The only one that isn't a plant is Helioptile, but that's because reptiles are cold-blooded and also need to sit in the sun.

Unova Stone

The Unova Stone, like the Sinnoh Stone, is region-based and is involved in evolving a lot of Pokemon. As such, we provide full details here:

You may have trouble tracking down Unova Stones since they're only obtained through a few methods. We provide help on finding them here:

Up-Grade Evolutions

Pokemon That Evolve With An Up-Grade

  • Porygon > Porygon2

The Porygon Pokemon (and all of its evolutions) makes no sense. We don't pretend to understand it. It's a computer Pokemon, so it evolves with an "Up-Grade."

You'll need another item (a Sinnoh Stone) to evolve Porygon2 into PorygonZ.
