Pokémon GO Is Adding A Mysterious New 'Lucky Friend' Friendship Level

The patch notes to go along with Pokémon GO's latest update seem to suggest that the game is about to get a whole new tier of friendship level.

Niantic has not been shy about making changes and rolling out updates on Pokémon GO. It's the main reason why the incredibly popular mobile game saw such a resurgence in 2018. New generations are coming thick and fast, we can now battle and trade Pokémon with friends, and the weather outside dictates the Pokémon we might stumble upon.

As the Pokémon GO players among you will know, adding "friends" in-game can be extremely beneficial to both parties. You can give each other gifts and trade Pokémon with one another. The more you do this, the higher the level of friendship between the two of you becomes, and in turn, you receive better rewards.

As it stands, the highest level of friendship you can attain in Pokémon GO is "Best," just like in real life, right? Well, if the patch notes to go with the latest update are anything to go by, that could be about to change. VG24/7 reports that something known as "Lucky Friends" will soon enter the fray, and it is currently being assumed that Lucky will be a tier above even Best.

The word "lucky" is already one that has been used in Pokémon GO, so it's not too crazy to think that there will be a link here. Currently, when a player trades a Pokémon with a friend, that Pokémon can receive a lucky buff, a random occurrence that greatly improves that Pokémon's stats. Perhaps if you achieve that lucky status with a friend, all Pokémon traded between the two of you will receive a buff.

Since Niantic has not revealed what it means to have a lucky friend in Pokémon GO yet, all we can do for now is speculate. This new feature may even be rolled out at random without an immediate announcement, further playing into the lucky element of it all. If that's the case, best keep an eye on that friend list and keep trading those Pokémon.
