Along with its X counterpart, Mega Charizard Y is one of only two Pokémon in Pokemon GO to have two different forms of mega evolutions. Unlike Mega Charizard X, however, Y stands as not only the far stronger variation of the two, but one of the most powerful Pokemon in the entire game. Such an extreme foe is not one to be taken lightly, but if you want to earn that rare Mega Energy so you can wield that power for yourself, you'll need to step up to the challenge. We'll share all the info we've collected in our Pokédex with you on the best counters, movesets, and more to topple Mega Charizard Y raids.

Pokemon GO Charizard Y - Analysis

Mega Charizard Y, unlike X, does remain the same Fire and Flying-type as a regular Charizard. Therefore, it still has the same weaknesses, including a double weakness to Rock types. Exploiting that type advantage is going to be your driving force in developing your strategy and lineup. Its other weaknesses are Electric and Water, but should only be thought of as a backup plan for last resorts.

Mega Charizard Y has the moveset you would expect from a Charizard, including Air Slash and Fire Spin for fast attacks. Its charged moves are mostly typical, Fire Blast and Overheat, but it also has Dragon Claw. This could be a dangerous move since it won't be countered by your Rock-type's advantage.

Weather won't play much of a role when you challenge a Mega Charizard Y because its double weakness is so extreme. Still, Sunny and Clear weather does boost its attack power, making it even more important to dodge as much as possible. Alternatively, Partly Cloudy weather is the best time for your Rock-type's to shine, so take advantage of it when you can.

Pokémon GO Mega Charizard Y - Best Counters

The two Pokémon most recommended, partly due to their strength but also them being fairly common, are Rhyperior and Tyranitar. Both of these are Rock-types, making them resistant to almost all of Mega Charizard Y's attacks, plus taking advantage of its double weakness. Rhyperior is the better of the two if you have it stacked with Smack Down and Rock Wrecker. Rock Wrecker, costing two bars of charge, is the best use of your energy throughout the fight.

Tyranitar is still a great option, coming in with fantastic stats, though you will want to make sure it knows Smack Down and Stone Edge. Smack Down is especially important, even doing better the any of Rhyperior's attacks, otherwise Tyranitar falls short of being a top tier pick.

If neither of these Pokémon work for you, some other strong Rock-types you could consider are Gigalith, Aerodactyl, Golem, Lunatone, Solrock, and Aggron. If you really wanted to throw in a Water-type, the only one you should consider is a Mega Blastoise.
