The mystery of the new Pokémon that has sprung up all over the world in Pokémon Go has finally started to receive some answers. A new video has been uploaded to the official Pokémon YouTube channel that confirms that the strange looking Ditto with a nut on its head is indeed a new Pokémon and not some kind of glitch or placeholder icon.

The video shows Professor Willow contacting Professor Oak about the strange new Pokémon that has been sighted. Professor Oak (the man who can’t remember his grandson’s name) suddenly recalls seeing this new Pokémon in an ancient text. Professor Oak reveals that this new Pokémon is called Meltan.

The trailer didn’t reveal much information about Meltan, but the official Pokémon Go website has been a little bit more forthcoming. Meltan is a Steel-type Pokémon that has the official designation of Helix Nut Pokémon. The Pokémon Go website claims that Meltan’s body is made of liquid metal that has the ability to corrode other kinds of metal and absorb it into its own body. Meltan can also fire bolts of electricity from its eye.

When Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu & Let’s Go Eevee was first announced, a brand new Pokémon was promised to appear in the games. This reveal trailer confirms that Meltan is indeed that new Pokémon and that the player will need to do something in Pokémon Go in order to acquire Meltan in Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu & Let’s Go Eevee.

We had previously speculated that Meltan was related to the unused Ditto evolution that was discovered in the leaked beta of Pokémon Gold & Silver. This Pokémon was called Animon and you needed to trade a Ditto holding a Metal Coat in order to make it evolve, in the same manner as Onix and Scyther.

The revelation that Meltan is related to Ditto and has a body made of liquid metal is strong evidence that we were correct and that Animon is finally making an appearance in the series in the form of a new Pokémon.

Will the other cut Pokémon from the leaked Pokémon Gold & Silver beta also be making their way into future games? The cat is out of the bag when it comes to their existence, so anything is possible.
