Pokemon Go hosts in-game events to celebrate almost every occasion, slightly changing and evolving these fan-favorites with each new iteration. One of these is the yearly New Year's event, a brief event that offers various bonuses and features as the year comes to a close.

The New Year's 2023 Event, will only be available for a few days, taking place from Saturday, December 31, 2022, 8pm to Wednesday, January 4, 2023, 8pm local time. There's a lot packed into this short event, so we've put together a guide that covers it all.

Pokemon Debuts

There are two costumed Pokemon that will be appearing in the game for the first time during the New Year's 2023 Event. First, expect to see a new costumed variant of Pikachu, wearing a party top hat. This event-themed Pokemon will be available via Raids and wild encounters.

The second costumed Pokemon making its debut is Noctowl wearing a New Year's outfit. This new Pokemon variant can be acquired by evolving the New Year's outfit wearing Hoothoot - a costumed Pokemon that has been available in the past, and will be making its return for this event.

Evolving Hoothoot into Noctowl will require 50 Hoothoot Candies.

Event Bonuses

Like with any Pokemon Go in-game event, there will be various bonuses available to all those who play the game during the event window. For this event there will only be two event bonuses, both having to do with hatching Eggs:

  • 1/2 Hatch Distance for Eggs that are put into Incubators during this event
  • 1/4 Hatch Distance for the first three Eggs that are hatched using the Pokemon Go Egg Hatching Widget

These two bonuses can't be stacked or combined. This means that eggs will either benefit from 1/2 Hatch Distance or 1/4 Hatch Distance, not both.
