Support for Pokémon GO will come to an end next month on certain devices and for players using certain OS.

What a difference four years can make. In 2016, it felt like almost everybody was gathered in local parks hunting Pokémon to celebrate the release of Pokémon GO. Four years later, and most of us spent the majority of our summers inside due to the fact there is still a global pandemic going on. On the bright side, that didn't stop Niantic from making sure we could all still play Pokémon GO.

The developer made a number of changes to its mobile game in order to make something that was created to be played outdoors playable from home. Niantic has been very successful in that regard. In fact, according to numbers for the first half of the year, Pokémon GO is on course to have its best 12 months to date. Quite the feat if it manages to do so considering the circumstances.

From its launch to its efforts throughout the pandemic, Niantic has strived to make its game available and playable to as many people as possible. However, that want has its limits. If players want the game to improve and progress, then certain devices and operating systems have to be left in the past. Niantic has revealed that is set to happen in mid-October and has revealed who and what will be affected.

In terms of operating systems, following the 0.189 update, Android 5, iOS 10, and iOS 11 will no longer be supported. Anyone with a device currently running on one of those systems that is able to will want to get that software update in sooner rather than later. As for devices, the quest to catch 'em all will come to an end for any trainers playing Pokémon GO on an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6 following the update.

While players using older OS can update their devices, fixing the issue won't be as simple for anyone playing on an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6. To continue playing Pokémon GO, you will need to buy a new device on which the game can still be played. Pokémon GO may still open on these devices beyond the update, but probably not. If it does, chances are it won't run very well, and any bugs it encounters will not be fixed by Niantic. Trainers will also be unable to use the in-game store.
