It has been a full week since the arrival of Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Nintendo already has an idea of just how successful the game has been. With just seven days gone, Legends: Arceus has sold an astounding 6.5 million copies around the world. If you love the game then that's incredibly good news since numbers like that almost definitely mean there will be more Pokemon games like Legends: Arceus in the future.

“Thank you to the more than 6.5 million explorers worldwide who have already embarked on an exciting new adventure in Pokemon Legends: Arceus,” Nintendo tweeted. For comparison, Sword & Shield managed six million games sold in its first week, while Let's Go Eevee & Let's Go Pikachu only hit half that at three million sold in seven days.

In defense of the earlier Pokemon games on Switch, far fewer consoles had launched compared to the number that are out there now. Nintendo also revealed this week that the Switch has now sold more than 103 million units worldwide. That officially makes it more successful than the Wii, and thus the best-selling home console in Nintendo history. It still has the Game Boy and the DS to beat if it wants to become the most successful Nintendo console ever.

As for Legends: Arceus, numbers filtering through over the course of its first week on the market will have tipped off Nintendo that it was having a very strong launch. More than 1.4 million copies were sold in Japan during its first three days, making it the second-biggest Switch game launch in the country after Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It also shot straight to the top of the boxed chart in the UK.

As touched upon above, all signs currently point to Legends: Arceus being the future of Pokemon games. Had it not performed this well off the bat, Game Freak might have decided to label it a spinoff and stick to the tried and true formula that has worked for Pokemon games for 25 years. Since it has sold 6.5 million copies in the space of a week, and the overall consensus from most who have played it is that it's good, it seems likely we'll be seeing more of what Legends: Arceus has offered up.
