So, Switch owners, are you looking to get ever so slightly ahead of the game on Super Smash Bros. Ultimates launch? You’re in the right place.

So, yes. As we all know, Nintendo is super-reliant on Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee and Smash Bros. Ultimate this holiday season. This time of year is huge, huge, huge for the company (Reggie himself has stated that 60% of Nintendo of America’s annual revenue comes during this period), so they’ll need to hawk their two heavy-hitters to the hilt. Hence this little bonus for owners of the latest Pokémon title.

Before we get into that, let’s pause and acknowledge the fact that Smash Ultimate is, finally, almost here. After all the hype, the rumors, the trailers, and the… ridiculous 'piranha plant is a playable character' reveals, the game launch is close. It’s close enough to smell that sweet, sweet new game smell when you open the case (unless you’re going digital, which is totally fine too).

It’s been a long ride, hasn’t it? As the release came closer, and the hype reached fever pitch, the inevitable datamining happened. Rogue copies of the game are out there (Nintendo is not amused), and so, as a result, all kind of cutscene leaks are freely moving on the internet (more on that here if you want to take a look).

Some of us, though, have kept ourselves pure. Some of us know nothing more than the lengths Nintendo Direct presentations have shown us. The new gameplay elements, such as the intriguing new Spirits system, the new way of powering up your fighters by combining them with ‘supporting’ characters (they’re like assist trophies, but with passive bonuses.

One thing’s clear about that: when your copy of the game arrives, you’re going to want to be grinding for the best Spirits. Here’s something that should help a little on that score: Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee owners will unlock a Partner Pikachu or Partner Eevee Spirit for their copy of Smash Ultimate instantly!

On this page, you can see for yourself how each one works. Whether you’ll get one or either, it’s quite a powerful effect to start off with. As Destructoid points out, though, you can unlock both through the course of gameplay regardless, so you won’t be missing out if you don’t own either game.

It’s just a little more delicious icing on the Ultimate cake that’s coming our way at the end of this week.
