In a mobile game like Pokemon Masters EX, you may expect the best units to be locked behind random summons requiring in-game currency. However, there are several outstanding sync pairs that can be acquired for free.

To note, there are a few ways that you will recruit free sync pairs. Some units will require you to collect "battle points," the game's passive system that allows you to accumulate points for rewards by playing and completing missions. In this case, the reward you need is a sync pair or "BP" voucher. Some of the most iconic Legendary Pokemon in the series will be awarded to you by completing "Legendary Adventures." Whether Legendary or not, the free unit pool boasts several high-tier options.

10 Erika & Tangela, BP: An Effective Staller, Lacking In Offensive Power

There is no shortage of love for the often-underappreciated Erika in Pokemon Masters EX. Of her four sync options, Tangela might be her best partner. Tangela can both trap using Infestation and badly poison opponents using Toxic, making it an all-in-one stalling unit.

Erika’s Trainer move also raises Tangela's Special Defense and Special Attack, allowing it to regain more health using Absorb. This gives it the survivability necessary for stalling, since you’ll be relying on poison and trap damage over time to take down your opponents while mitigating damage.

9 Lt. Surge & Raichu, BP: Physical Support, Self-Heals Only

Lt. Surge and Raichu pose back to back, smiling.

Lt Surge is renowned for using offensively-oriented Electric-types, and this physical support offers your team a myriad of team-wide Attack, Defense, and Critical-hit buffs. They offer a nice blend of boosts to keep your team fighting and firing off damage.

Add in his ability to debilitate single targets on demand, some decent healing via his First Aid sync grid tile, and Endurance to help Raichu hang on for one last hit, and you have a very serviceable Electric-type support. They're sure to give your team a healthy jolt, but they lack the pure power and utility of certain other pairs.

8 Ghetsis & Kyurem: Gauge-Heavy Debuffer and Status Dealer

The antagonist of Pokemon: Black and White returns with a very useful tech unit in the Legendary Pokemon Kyurem. After filling out his sync grid, Ghetsis can drop both the Attack and Special Attack of his opponents by two stat ranks. His powerful 4-gauge-move, Glaciate, hits all opponents, lowers their Speed, and has a chance to freeze via grid.

Kyurem even offers a chance at debilitating targets with Dragon Breath on top of an impressive sync attack that can deal huge damage. Kyurem can help many teams, but is limited by the cost of Glaciate. Be prepared with Speed or gauge support to help this unit shine.

7 Morty & Mismagius, BP: Versatile Defensive Support Plus Heals

Johto's Ghost-type Gym Leader, Morty and Mismagius form a powerful support duo. Mismagius' stats are nothing to scoff at, with both Defenses hovering at 249 to top off an exceptional base kit that only improves with the grid.

This is one of the few pairs that can buff both Defenses. They also come stacked with self-heals via First Aid and Healthy Healing grid tiles, Potion to heal teammates, and both Astonish and Confuse Ray to disrupt opponents. This pair can slot into almost any team, unlike a more limited support in Surge & Raichu, and is well worth your BP voucher.

6 Hop & Zamazenta: Physical Healing Support Boasting Solid Damage

Continuing the trend of useful supports, Hop & Zamazenta offer buffs similar to Lt. Surge & Raichu, as they also raise Attack, Defense, and Critical-hit rate. However, unlike Raichu, Zamazenta has on-demand heals via Potion and tighter Defense thanks to its passives, Sentry Entry and Healthy Benefits (which raise Defense by two ranks and reduce damage when at full HP respectively).

Hop also boasts his passive, Freevenge 4, which gives a fifty-fifty chance for his next move to cost no gauges after he is hit by a move; this enables some respectable damage from this support pair via the 4-gauge Behemoth Bash. The added extra bit of chip damage gives the formidable Zamazenta the edge over its BP counterparts.

5 Professor Sycamore & Xerneas: All-in-One Special Support

Xerneas made its mark in competitive battles, and it continues its reign in the Pokemon Masters EX support meta. One of only three supports with a buff-only sync move, Xerneas maxes its team's Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed in a single sync move and can max Attack with its passive, Team Shout 4.

Xerneas' area-of-effect gradual healing and move gauge acceleration make it a valuable team unit, but it can also keep itself alive using its health-sapping Horn Leech. While already quite impressive, Xerneas will become even stronger once it receives its EX, as all EX support-types gain an additional sync buff.

4 Cyrus & Palkia: Dragon Sync And Water DPS

As one of the few non-limited-time Dragon-type damage dealers, Cyrus & Palkia are already useful by definition. However, even in the pool of limited Pokefair and Master Fair units, this unit still shines as a Dragon- and Water-type powerhouse.

Cyrus can fully buff Palkia's Speed and Special Attack by trading half of his HP, and can max his own Critical-rate using Spacial Rend combined with the Critical Focus 2 grid tile. Cyrus' sync grid buff (and receiving his EX via event) will only push his damage capabilities further, and give him the coveted AoE sync power for strikers. For best results, give him a Critical Strike 2 lucky skill, and it will stack with his passive to add up to Critical Strike 11: a 110% damage boost to all critical hits.

3 Skyla & Swanna: The Premier Sustained Healing Support

The original 'best support in the game,' Skyla and Swanna maintain their incredible reputation with team Speed and Defense buffs. Skyla's claim to fame comes from her Potions having two MP refresh tiles in her grid, which makes their two-use-only cap a non-issue, with Skyla sometimes refreshing her Potion uses infinitely.

Skyla's EX was also given out for free via event, so she is only the second free-to-play EX support, after Rosa. Factor in Skyla's 250 in both Defenses, massive 813 HP, and her ability to flinch her opponents via her Gust Staggering 1 grid tile, and it's obvious why she and her fearsome Flying-type remains among the very best.

2 Giovanni & Mewtwo: Incredible On-Type Damage Dealer

The series' most iconic and mysterious villain, Giovanni (of the enigmatic Viridian City Gym), teams up with one of the most powerful Pokemon in Mewtwo, and they live up to the hype. Like Skyla and Cyrus, Giovanni & Mewtwo were also upgraded via special events, giving Mewtwo access to both an EX and a Mega Evolution.

Upon Mega Evolving into Mega Mewtwo Y, Mewtwo's already stellar stats skyrocket: Special Attack increases from 520 to 623 and Speed improves from 466 to 559. Mewtwo also gains its signature move, Psystrike, after Mega Evolving, and received no reduction to the base power of its sync move when it received a Mega Evolution. To put this into perspective, all other Mega-Evolving Pokemon have reduced sync move power. Mewtwo is easily one of the most powerful raw strikers in the game.

1 Your Kanto Trio Choice: SS Red, SS Blue, or SS Leaf

The Kanto trio debuted as limited-time, Pokefair-only units, but have entered into free-to-play territory. Upon introducing their Victory Road tutorial, DeNA gave players a free choice of one member of the Kanto Trio, with all three units being wonderful in their roles.

Sygna Suit Blue is widely regarded as one of the best supports in the game, due to incredibly high defensive stats, buffs to almost every stat, and heals. Sygna Suit Red is the epitome of a self-sufficient striker: he raises all of Charizard's offensive stats on his own, has powerful AoE and single target attacks, and a very helpful grid. Lastly, Sygna Suit Leaf offers AoE Toxic, AoE Defense, Special Defense, and Evasiveness debuffs, and healing (not to mention a strong sync attack and stalling capabilities that blow even Erika & Tangela out of the water). No matter which unit you select, your roster will have a mighty, versatile member for many battles to come.
