Mewtwo is one of the first legendary Pokémon and has a pretty tragic backstory. His story is one about mad science gone wrong, to create the most powerful Pokémon through cloning.

Pokémon: The First Movie is where Mewtwo was first introduced in 1998, and the film got a computer-animated remake as Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution just last year. So Mewtwo is a story that is constantly revisited by fans in both games and films. Obviously, there is also a lot of Mewtwo fan art. Here are ten pieces of fan art we loved. Be sure to check out the links to the artists, as they deserve credit for their work.

10 Mew And Mewtwo

Mewtwo is a clone of Mew, so a lot of fan art that features him often also feature Mew. The artist for this piece is TamberElla and they make epic pieces of art of various Pokémon, especially of the legendary kind. They do realistic and colossal versions of Pokémon like Groundon, Lugia, and Kyogre that look absolutely nightmarish.

However, this Mewtwo is not colossal or nightmarish. What is cool about its design is that is shows it almost like a looming shadow over Mew.

9 Let's Go Mewtwo

This work was a commission piece, but the artist put it online in celebration for when Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee came out. Those Switch games reintroduced the Kanto region, so of course Mewtwo was in it as well.

The artist is the talented GENZOMAN. They do a fan art for shows and films like Steven Universe and Hotel Transylvania. Much more so, they make fan art for games like God of War, The Legend of Zelda, Overwatch, Nier: Automata, Mario, and much more.

8 Stylized

We love that the artist did something a little different with both Mew and Mewtwo's designs in this fan art. They have been stylized to be elongated and we absolutely love Mew's super long tail.

The artist is jaslikeschocolate. Besides Pokémon, the artist has also done fan art for fandoms like Final Fantasy and Black Butler.

7 Cute Meeting

Despite being a clone of Mew, Mewtwo is quite different, especially in terms of personality. Mew is bubbly, curious, and impish. Mewtwo is cautious, hostile, and moody. So besides the fact that they are clones, people like to draw these two together since they are so different in personality.

The artist for this piece is a self-taught artist, sharkie19. We love this particular fan art she did because it is very cute. Mew and Mewtwo look like little babies.

6 Giovanni's Control

A major part of Mewtwo's life is Giovanni. It was actually Team Rocket that created him, and Giovanni is their leader. This is the major reason as to why Mewtwo hates humans. His first interaction with their species was through Team Rocket and their insidious experimentation on him and others.

The artist for this piece is Spidersaiyan. Besides Pokémon, he also draws fan art for Spiderman, Captain Falcon, Steven Universe, Mario, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and much more.

5 Ambertwo And Mewtwo

Shockingly, many fans do not know about Amber from the anime. She was Mr. Fuji's daughter who died, so he tried to make a clone of her as well while he worked on Mewtwo. While both Mewtwo and Ambertwo grew up in their test tubes, Mewtwo hung out with Ambertwo telepathically and they became great friends. Unfortunately though, Ambertwo's experiment passed away and was a failure.

We definitely love this fan art because it has Amber in it. She is a character that should have more attention when discussing Mewtwo. The artist for this piece is PiraticOctopus.

4 Mewtwo Gijinka

Gijnikas are the humanization of non-human characters, and it is a very popular form of  Pokémon fan art. It is awesome to see how artists translate inhuman characteristics to human forms. This Mewtwo gijinika was done by AlishmcMalish. She replaced the inhuman feet with science-fiction inspired boots. To replace the horns, she gave him headphones with a unique design. Like Mewtwo, he looks like he has walked out of an experiment tank, hence all the wires. Also like Mewtwo, it appears he also has psychic powers.

The artists' other fan art includes characters from Star Wars, Steven Universe, Dragon Age, and more.

3 Stadium Battle

According to the artist, they were inspired to make this fan art from the battle you have with Mewtwo in Pokémon Stadium. The game dates back to 1999 and 2000 and was for the Nintendo 64 console, but it still well loved by loyal fans. Basically, it was just the battle part of typical Pokémon games.

The artist who did this piece is aocom. Be sure to check them out, as they have a lot of other amazing pieces of Pokémon fan art. We love the action in this image as well as the beautiful sky background. The clouds look like cotton candy! Mewtwo looks scary like a game boss should be.

2 Mega Mewtwo Y

Mewtwo was special enough to get two different Mega forms, its X and Y forms, which (fittingly) were introduced in Pokémon X and Y. This particular design is the Y form. According to its Pokédexn entry, its Y form may have made Mewtwo smaller, but its mental power has increased to the point that is can smash a skyscraper with a mere thought. Yikes!

The artist for this is mcgmark. He has done a lot of Pokémon fan art, so be sure to check out his gallery for more.

1 Glowing Eyes

The artist, smooshkin, made this art due to binging the Pokémon anime.

We love the colors, the fierceness in Mewtwo's stance, and how it looks like he is just wrecking an entire city like a supervillain. The artist also went extra on the details to give Mewtwo some fur.
