No other Pokémon is as almighty, invincible, immortal, and all-powerful as Mewtwo from the Pokémon series. Equipped with his sheer psychic abilities, Mewtwo can control whoever he wants and whatever he wants... including the Earth's weather. Seen as a god more than a Pokémon (sorry, Arceus, we'll get to you later), Mewtwo continues to reign among all other Pokémon and mankind below him.

He's a mighty creature to be up against in a battle, much more so the Generation 1 version of him. In recent additions, his two Mega Evolutions put him among the fastest and strongest Pokémon, sending his base stats to tie with the highest of all Pokémon. Mewtwo alone has taken on the most powerful of legendaries, and could easily take and defeat a whole lot of others, including Arceus and Mew.

Not convinced of Mewtwo's overwhelming power? Think again, his psychic abilities are virtually unopposed, leaving many Pokémon to fear him and to avoid all possible interaction with him. Many have attempted to capture, train and even abuse Mewtwo, but alas it remains an impossibility in the Pokémon lore. Upon researching the ends of the internet, the games, and movies that belong to the Pokémon universe. Here at TheGamer we've found a total of 26 things that make Mewtwo too powerful as a Pokémon.

26 The Invincible Mewtwo

Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow introduced us to the very first 151 Pokémon. As we embarked on the adventure that brought us out of Pallet Town and into the Pokémon-filled wilds of the Kanto Region, we saw a number of powerful foes. However, no one or nothing stood more in a Pokémon trainer's way than the all-powerful Mewtwo. Most of you might be shrugging his overrating, but I assure you all that Generation 1 Mewtwo was a force to be reckoned with. As one internet user highlights, "There was Mewtwo and then there was everything else."

For starters, Mewtwo can create his own Master Balls.

Mewtwo had no weaknesses, and if you managed to hurt him he would recover on his next move. Not only did he have a special ability that drastically raised his attack and defense, but his speed was seldom matched in the game. Trainers have toppled Kanto's Elite 4 with nothing but a freshly caught Mewtwo, with no items and no supplements. Not to mention, that unlike the succeeding generations, Psychic types were completely immune to Ghost-types. Even the fastest and most powerful of Ghost-types like Gengar barely stood a chance. As we know it, there isn't a single Pokémon that is more powerful than Generation 1, Mewtwo.

25 A Genetic Copy

via: youtube.com

If you've watched the very first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, you know how Mewtwo was created. Compared to the actual video game where a pregnant Mew gave birth to Mewtwo in Guyana, Mewtwo was created using the fossilized DNA of Mew according to the animated movie. Team Rocket's Giovanni decided to fund a scientific experiment where a man by the name of Dr. Fuji would attempt to clone a living and more powerful replica of Mew. Dr. Fuji used both human DNA and that of Mew's to attempt at creating a better copy of Mewtwo.

Using an eyelash, Mewtwo was cloned from Mew.

The Mewtwo experiment turned to be a success. However, Mewtwo was vicious. Being copied from the DNA of the most powerful Pokémon in an inhumane process only to be used as some tool definitely turn you into a weapon. Mewtwo proceeds to destroy the entire lab and most likely everyone within it. The scary part is that he hadn't even tested his power. Whether Mewtwo turned insane from the cloning process or whether he was just frustrated is indifferent when having realized his destructive potential. Not only that, Mewtwo decided to fly off, away from labs, away from Giovanni on an endeavor to reign terror and rule the world. If the story hadn't played out like it did, it's highly possible that Mewtwo would have been successful in his attempt.

24 It's Over 780!

via: screwattack.roosterteeth.com

Mewtwo possessed the highest base stat in the Pokémon universe for quite some time. In his original form, Mewtwo has a base stat of 680 with ferociously high speed and attack stats. But alas, the introduction of Mega Pokémon have dethroned Mewtwo to spot number #16, with 15 other Pokémon right ahead of it. It should be noted that most of these Pokémon, if not, technically all of them are Mega Evolutions. If Mewtwo Mega-evolves into one of its forms it takes back its well-deserved throne as the most powerful Pokémon (tied with Mega Rayquaza) with a base stat of 780! That's insane for a Pokémon.

Charizard, the fan-favorite Pokémon to have stood up to Entei, Articuno, and even a Blastoise has a base stat of 534, with his Mega-Evolutions reaching a base stat totaling 634. Not even Mew has a higher base stat than Mega Mewtwo, let alone the original Mewtwo with a base stat of only 600. It's safe to say that not only was Mewtwo successful in becoming the universe's most powerful Pokémon, he became stronger than the Pokémon of whom he was primarily based off, and that's just his original form. Mewtwo X or Y could easily do what they wanted to, given their extreme speed, strength, and above all, intelligence.

23 Pokken Tournament Banishment

via: youtube.com

Remember that fighting game Tekken? Although much less famous, Nintendo released a similar game called Pokken Tournament, involving a number of strong Pokémon such as Lucario, Machamp, Pikachu, Suicune, and Gardevoir. The Pokémon all have special moves, finishing moves, weight, and even health bars in the upper corners. I'll be honest, it was a bit of a fruit salad of a game when I first saw the trailer 3 years ago.

Alas, the game scored high, combining both a unique genre to a much popular series.

That said, Mewtwo is also a character in this game, yet he's extremely powerful. He's even the final boss, or at least a version of him known as Shadow Mewtwo is. Once you beat the main storyline, you'll be able to play as Shadow Mewtwo. Thing is, he's considered quite overpowered by even the best of players. According to some players, Shadow Mewtwo has been banned in local tournaments. People have attempted to ban players who use Shadow Mewtwo's "infinite" move which completely crushes an opponent or even giving the win to the victim of the move. You'd think that in a knockoff game like Pokken, somehow Mewtwo would be defeatable, yet trainers of all the likes will always have difficulty in defeating Mewtwo.

22 Mewtwo Defeated Shadow The Hedgehog...

via: netraptor.deviantart.com

If you've never seen ScrewAttack, you probably should. They take fictional characters from across various universes and put them face to face in an ultimate showdown. Wiz and Boomstick are the series' hosts and throughout a long video, they evaluate the two characters to best decide who would win in an actual battle. Think about it as Deadliest Warrior for video games, television, movies, anime and everything else pop culture. Like Mewtwo, Dr. Eggman created Shadow as an ultimate lifeform. The only difference was in their purpose, Shadow was created to achieve immortality while Mewtwo was created to achieve ultimate power.

Like I mentioned, ScrewAttack decided to put these two powerful man-made creatures face-to-face to see who would actually win. Hint: Mewtwo wins. Shadow, though, isn't weak... Shadow is very fast, even faster than Sonic depending on who you ask. When he has access to the Chaos Emeralds, he becomes essentially invincible, not to mention that he can bend space and time in his liking. But the fact remains, Mewtwo overcame him. If Mewtwo can defeat the ultimate life form, then what does that make Mewtwo? I'm not too sure what Mewtwo would be called upon defeating Shadow, but truth be told, I guess when you defeat Shadow the Hedgehog nothing really else stands in your way at that point.

21 He's Lost

via: griffinflash.deviantart.com

Mewtwo is a tragic character. Although most of him can see him as an intense guy who can take on ultimately anybody or anything that has the misfortune of ever meeting Mewtwo. Like I've already highlighted before, Mewtwo is vicious and fierce. But have we really ever asked ourselves why? I mean, being created to be used as nothing but a tool would upset you, and if you have the power to destroy the people that would do such a thing, I suppose you'd have the right to be angry. But for some reason, I found it way too brash for a creature of such high intellectual capacity to do such a thing. If we look further into the movie, you'll see that Dr. Fuji, the man who created Mewtwo, had a daughter who had unfortunately passed, named Amber.

While he was creating him, Mewtwo and Amber had a psychic connection that enabled both of them to telepathically communicate with each other.

Mewtwo was a deeply emotional creature, thinking that the mental presence of Amber was too traumatizing for Mewtwo, Dr. Fuji erased Mewtwo's memory of her. This led Mewtwo to feel lost, sad, without a sense of purpose, and especially without a friend. Mewtwo is already powerful, yet his emotions definitely made him stronger and more forceful than he needed to be. We know how the rest went.

20 Mewtwo, The Tier A Player

via: knowyourmeme

The re-addition of Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. 4 was indeed a good time for both Pokémon, with its release of Pokémon X and Y, and Super Smash Bros. with its fourth installment. Thanks to his strong fan base, nostalgia from Melee, preference over Lucario, and overall awesomeness, Nintendo decided to bring back the beloved Mewtwo. Don't get me wrong, when I first saw his release trailer I was a bit skeptical. I loved playing as Mewtwo in Melee, but he was a slow, heavy, and tough character to master. However, equipped with a fresh new look, stats, and moves, Mewtwo delivered.

A quick look will let you know that Mewtwo is up there in Tier A; the second best Tier after S. He's right up there alongside Mario, Fox, Sonic, Ryu, Sheik, and even the goddess-like Rosalina. He's much faster and has a large range of motion, capable of hitting foes all around. His attacks are powerful and he packs quite a punch if you get too close to him. Other than his hitbox being larger than most, making him more vulnerable, he's a great character to play as. He's even used by professional player Mew2, who's known for using Mewtwo's powerful down+A move, kicking players to the bottom of the stage upon trying to get back up. Not only in Pokémon, but in Super Smash Bros. does he also make a powerful display.

19 Only MissingNo Can Match His Power

ign.com

Nothing gets truly weirder than MissingNo when it comes to Pokémon. If you don't know about this weird glitch thing, MissingNo is a Pokémon of sorts that you can find in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow after performing a certain series of glitches. How these players found it, I have no idea. It shares Nidoran's cry and five various forms. It's a Bird/Normal Type with a "???" category. Nintendo's statement on this is that MissingNo is nothing but a glitch and that players should avoid it if they want to hold onto their save files.

That said, MissingNo is the only Pokémon or glitch that can truly stand up to the all-powerful Generation 1 Mewtwo.

MissingNo can multiply items in your bags, that is, if he doesn't mess up your game. MissingNo can spawn various highly-leveled Pokémon just randomly and according to some theorists, it can destroy the world, just like it can destroy your save files. Sometimes it can even evolve into a Kangaskhan if it feels like it, but changes its name into just, "M." With the ability of randomly spawning powerful Pokémon, multiplying your items (including Master Balls) and even crashing your game if it wants to, I believe Mewtwo may have found its match. If you're watching this and a good animator, please make an animated fight scene between Mewtwo and MissingNo.

18 Mewtwo Biology

via: reddit.com

Mewtwo's ripped. Mega Mewtwo X is even more ripped, not to mention he's 7ft2, weighing at 275 pounds. Mewtwo is almost all muscle with really strong bones to back up the strength. He's bioengineered to be the most powerful Pokémon, after all. He's a perfect combination of brain and brawn, being capable of reading and wiping people's minds while easily defeating a variety of tough Pokémon, including Articuno and Gyarados. It is said that Mewtwo's genome is loosely based on that of Alakazam's which makes sense if we look at Mewtwo's twin bone crests, his torso, and his three-point grip.

Mewtwo even has a brain within the tip of its tail, which's exterior can be seen as the giant bulb at the end. He once used his tail to crush Mew into the earth. It's said that Mewtwo's skull is lined with electro-receptive pores. Psyduck has the same biology but is obviously much less powerful. This is what allows Mewtwo to read and wipe people's minds with ease while manipulating the gravity around him. Mewtwo doesn't need to eat or drink nutrients, either, making him a biologically immortal creature. Lastly, his brain to body ratio is 50:1, which I will get more into later on. What I'm getting from all this is that Dr. Fuji was really going all out when wanting to make the perfect Pokémon.

17 Mewtwo Controls The Weather

via: puclapokemonpodcast.com

Remember when Mewtwo was seen sitting on his throne? You could more or less actually see Mewtwo, but what you really could see were his pronged hands moving in such a way that mimicked the stirring of a glass in a very nonchalant way. He starred out into the sky and as he moved his hands, the clouds started to move and the sky turned quickly grey. Mewtwo used his insane psychic abilities to control the weather. Not even we, as humans, have developed the necessary technology to control the weather.

Yet Mewtwo does it with nothing but a wave of his hand.

What people also don't notice was that he was controlling the weather on a global scale, as trainers came from all over, given that the storm he created served as a test for trainers all over. The only other Pokémon to do something anything remotely similar is Castform, who only changes shape and form based on what the weather is. Yeah, not quite the same thing. If anyone wanted to get close to Mewtwo, Mewtwo could easily conjure up a storm, a blizzard, a tornado, whatever like he did in the First Movie. If a Pokémon could control the weather, then what else is there to control or master? Like I said before, Dr. Fuji knew what he was doing when wanting to create the ultimate Pokémon... maybe too well.

16 Shrugging Off A Hyperbeam

via: shad0wkaras - devianart.com

Mewtwo's virtually unstoppable and can only be really defeated by the MissingNo, which not to mention, is not really a Pokémon and rather a glitch. With Generation 1 in mind, we all know how Hyper Beam was a popular and arguably the most powerful move in the game, given that it takes an entire move for it to even charge. When Mewtwo invites the trainers to test their Pokémon's skills, there's a water type trainer who possesses a very powerful Gyarados. After having defeated the trainer a number of times, the trainer commands his Gyarados to finish Mewtwo with a Hyper Beam.

Now, Gyarados is a powerful one. With a base stat of 540 and with an attack stat of 125 (which is stronger than Mewtwo's at 110). Mewtwo looks a little taken at Gyarados's rage. He turns to the mighty sea monster, which slithers its way to the mightier creature. In one breath, Gyarados spits a powerful Hyper Beam attack. Everyone who's played the games prior to watching the movie thought this was finally going to cripple Mewtwo. Within seconds, Mewtwo lifts his arm and creates a psychic shield that protects him from the blast. Using his abilities, Mewtwo absorbs and deflects it back to Gyarados who faints right after. I was quite taken when I first saw this. I was a fan of Gyarados, but seeing such a powerful Pokémon go down in one move made me curious about this apparently even more powerful being.

15 Creating Giant Buildings Within Weeks

via: dogasu.bulbagarden.net

The island/lab that Mewtwo was created on must have been no cheap investment. It's a lonely, presumably self-sustaining island that's seemingly hidden away in the middle of some ocean. Not to mention, it's a gigantic technological lab used to clone species and create powerful Pokémon like Mewtwo. Mewtwo in his anger destroys the entirety of the lab, probably along with everyone inside, leaving it nothing but a pile of flaming rubble. Now, I don't know why I ever questioned this or why none of my friends ever did, but where does Mewtwo, or better yet, how does Mewtwo acquire such a huge castle out in the middle of the ocean?

His castle has a giant battle stadium, a spiral staircase, gigantic fans, and especially an underground lab, capable of the same technological marvels of Dr. Fuji's lab before he destroyed it. Since the mind-controlled Nurse Joy, a cloned Venasaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, and Mewtwo are the only inhabitants of the island before the trainers arrive, I believe it's safe to say that this lab is more technologically advanced than Dr. Fuji's, being automatic as it needs no one's supervision to take care of it. If Mewtwo can create such architecture with nothing but his psychic powers, then what can't he do? Oh yeah, he also created a ton of Master Balls...

14 A Deity Without A Purpose

via: knowyourmeme.com

It's safe to say that Mewtwo is virtually an unmatched creature in the realm of Pokémon (and that of Sega, having beaten Shadow the Hedgehog). As we mentioned before, he's basically an immortal being, not needing any sort of nourishment to support himself. He's also incredibly powerful being able to control the weather, clone any Pokémon and create spectacular forms of architecture. That said... why?

He's a god that no one can stand up to, which makes him all the more unparalleled.

Giovanni, the all-powerful and all-rich CEO of Team Rocket who had limitless jobs for Mewtwo, couldn't even find a purpose for Mewtwo, much less scold him for it. Moreover, a bunch of top-notch trainers with Pokémon like Charizard, Gyarados, and Ash's Pikachu couldn't even give Mewtwo a good run for his money. (Although, I need to give it to Charizard who did give a good run to Mewtwo's clone, in my biased opinion.) Mewtwo's too smart and too powerful to exist among a much less powerful and less aware world. He constantly questions himself, demanding people and himself for his purpose. He becomes an existential threat to both himself and to others who have the unfortunate desire to harness his power. Imagine that, being that powerful that no purpose can exist.

13 He Could Defeat Arceus

via: aminoapps.com

Arceus, the God of Pokémon, should be inherently the strongest Pokémon in the universe, right? I mean, it had enough power to create the universe himself, so why not establish dominance at the top of the Pokémon hierarchy? Mewtwo, at his core, was designed to be the strongest Pokémon, to be used as a weapon by Team Rocket. In the movie Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Arceus isn't as powerful as us fans make him out to be. If he had wanted to end humanity and destroy the world in the process, then maybe sending medium-sized meteors isn't the best way to go.

Don't get me wrong, the god is strong, but not as strong as people seem to imagine. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Mewtwo can be seen actually wreaking all sorts of havoc. He controls storms with a wave of his hand and was capable of raising an army of Super Pokémon that could easily control the world if he wanted to. In terms of its base stats, Arceus reaches at 720, while Mewtwo in his Mega Form gets a base stat of 780. I'm not saying that Mewtwo could defeat Arceus in a battle, but he'd certainly be able to stand up to him. It's quite interesting to see a scientific creation go up against a religious figure. It's symbolic, if you ask me.

12 He's A Psychic Master

via: beyondentertainment.com

Mewtwo's psychic abilities alone make him near unstoppable. He's seen on countless occasions toying with people, sending them back and forth and into the air like some crazy-minded, powerful Sith Lord. On one occasion, he sends Ash flying without even moving a muscle, after he foolishly tries to punch Mewtwo. He has the skill to erase the memories of several people within seconds, and as we've mentioned before, he can create giant buildings, deadly storms, Master Balls, and cloning laboratories in a very short matter of time.

To me, the most impressive thing Mewtwo's done was actually not in Mewtwo Strikes Back, but in the sequel, Mewtwo Returns. Mewtwo isolated himself on a mountain away from human interaction. After sacrificing himself to Giovanni, Mewtwo breaks from his bondage and decides to teleport all of Team Rocket, Giovanni, Ash, and his friends, all of the Pokémon there, and the entire body of water on top of the mountain with him. This scene, in particular, reminds me of that old movie, Jumper. Especially at the end where the protagonist teleports an entire house, and if you saw the movie, you'll see how difficult that was for him. Yet, this powerful Pokémon seems to do it at ease, even after being tortured and held captive by state of the art technology developed by Giovanni.

11 He Defeated Deoxys...

via: reddit.com

Deoxys scared a lot of my friends when we watched the Destiny Deoxys movie on YTV. He was a weirder Pokémon who made very bizarre sounds and was owning Rayquaza for most of the fight at the beginning of the movie and towards the end. Not to mention that Deoxys is from space, only adding to his strange, yet powerful nature. He's also the fastest Pokémon when he transforms into his "Speed Form," achieving a speed stat of 180. Mega Mewtwo Y, the faster version of Mewtwo trails behind at 140 in terms of speed.

That said, Mewtwo can be seen besting the alien Pokémon.

However, in the manga, Pokémon Adventures, Mewtwo and Deoxys go head to head in all-out battle. Deoxys would seem to have the advantage with its ability to transform in various forms. He outranks the original Mewtwo in speed, attack, and defense. Mewtwo would need to transform into Mega Mewtwo X for it to have the edge in attack. Yet, after a fierce exchange between the two legendaries, Mewtwo is able to best Deoxys after sending a psychic blast into Deoxy's central area, paralyzing the alien. Deoxys was often seen as one of the most powerful Pokémon for a long while, being able to transform itself into various advantageous skillets. But alas, it seems that no Pokémon, no matter how powerful, can truly defeat Mewtwo.

10 ...And Even Articuno

via: youtube.com

The Pokémon Origins TV series is quite good. If you grew up playing the original black and white Game Boy games like I did, the animated short takes you through the same adventures that you once did in the original Red and Blue games. From Pallet Town to the Elite 4 you see Red capture all 151 Pokémon and take on the toughest of trainers in his attempt to become the very best. What's awesome about this series is that the final battle is with Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave, where you once were in the game as well. Now, if you approached Mewtwo with a mediocre team, it's likely you got defeated and lost your chance at capturing Mewtwo (unless you saved).

The same can be seen when Red in Origins goes up against Mewtwo and watches his Pokémon get pathetically defeated one after another until all that's left is Charizard. This is a good reminder to us that thought made us all think that we were invincible when catching the three legendary birds; Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. But that assumption soon turned on us as we see Mewtwo crush Articuno in just one blow in Origins. Not to mention that at this point, Red's defeated the Elite 4, meaning that at this point in time, Red is the Pokémon Champion; the strongest trainer in all of Kanto. Yet, it takes a Mega-Evolved Charizard X to at least weaken Mewtwo.

9 He's Strong

via: pokemonwikifandom.com

As I mentioned before, Mewtwo is full muscle. He's taller than average and weighs more than average, even though human DNA has been used to create him. But physical strength aside, his psychic strength as seen through his levitation makes him all the stronger. However, there are two particular scenes in which Mewtwo shows off his excellent psychic strength. In one scene, Mewtwo is seen casually throwing a giant Onix across the room. It should be noted that Onixes weigh about 463 pounds. Under the command of Giovanni, Mewtwo confronts a herd of angry Tauros. Unless I'm mistaken, or if there's more Tauros outside the frame, I counted nine Tauros. That's 1754.1 lbs of pure Tauros meat and that was done with but a wave of a hand!

What's most impressive is that Mewtwo does this all under Giovanni's armor suit. This acted sort of like how Sidious built Vader's suit in Star Wars; it restrained the ability of the wearer like a chain around a dog's neck. Although both Mewtwo and Darth Vader look absolutely cool in their robotic suits, it's factual that they did not enjoy being in them. It hindered their power and forced them to obey under the command of an autocratic ruler who wanted nothing more than to exploit them, which goes to show how scared of Mewtwo Team Rocket and Giovanni were.

8 A Copy Of A Copy?

via: youtube.com

Mewtwo appears several times in the Pokémon movies. When he appears in the Genesect and the Legend Awakened movie, something's a bit off. This Mewtwo is much kinder, and softer. It acts more as a defender to the world against the chaos the Genesects create. It mentions that unlike the Mewtwo we were used to, cares deeply about Pokémon and shows it by doing what it can to combat the antagonizing Genesects. The weirdest part is that Mewtwo's voice in this movie is that of a woman's; it sounds nothing like the original Mewtwo. There's a theory that there exists more than one Mewtwo, but I don't buy it, at least not entirely.

To me, the original Mewtwo still exists. As we saw at the end of Mewtwo Returns, Mewtwo (male voiced) ventures off into the wilderness to find harmony with the world, therefore ending its hopes of ever conquering and ruling the world. I do believe however that the original Mewtwo, with its ability to clone Pokémon, did in fact clone himself. In an effort to find purpose and challenge, it's entirely possible to suggest that Mewtwo would create a Mewthree; a much stronger and more powerful version of himself that would pose a much bigger threat to his existence and would, therefore, give him a larger purpose. If this is true, then creating a more powerful of himself makes Mewtwo a virtual god.

7 "I Am Ready To Be"

via: illustrious-rocket - tumblr.com

One of the first things we hear from Mewtwo is at the beginning of the movie when he utters, "I am ready to be." What does this exactly mean? This sentence makes much more sense if we take into account that missing deleted scene that was unfortunately taken out from the American version of the movie. It still exists in the Japanese version of the movie, where an underdeveloped Mewtwo makes friends with Dr. Fuji's daughter, Amber (Ai in Japanese) of whom he talks to telepathically.

The interesting thing about this scene is that Mewtwo has the intellectual ability to exist in different realms. The two (along with a cloned Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander) fly in the sky of some paradise-like land, while they talk about the sun and the wind. They even feel the effects of these natural elements as they converse about their use to the world. Mewtwo seems to have the intellectual capacity to send his consciousness into another dream-like world, while still underdeveloped, attached to a number of wires and submerged in some orange liquid. This would make sense if Mewtwo is able to wipe the memories of whoever he wants while doing a series of other intellectually demanding stuff.
