Fire Type Pokemon are some of the most popular in competitive play, as well as in general.

Updated January 19, 2024 by Jon Eakin: Pokemon has had an interesting few years since this article was last updated. The Diamond and Pearl remakes launched, not to mention Legends: Arceus followed by Scarlet and Violet and their DLC. That means the landscape for Fire moves has changed, so we wanted to make sure this article was in the best shape possible in order to help you burn up the competition.

17 Blast Burn

It's Simply Effective

Mega Charizard X in the anime unleashes a Blast Burn attack, surrounded by blue flames.

There are many Fire moves that have more nuance than Blast Burn, netting stronger results if used correctly. Sometimes, though, all you want is a simple tool for a simple job, and there's nothing more important in Pokemon battles than reducing your opponents' HP.

Blast Burn has an astounding 150 base power and 90 percent accuracy, too, so it's almost always going to get the job down. The downside is it requires your Pokemon to spend the next turn recharging, but if your opponent is already knocked out, then that's not a problem.

16 Burning Jealousy

Double Battle, Double Benefit

Flareon using a boosted Fire Spin the Pokémon anime

Burning Jealousy is a solid move for use in Double Battles. Unlike many other spread Fire-Type moves, Burning Jealousy will only hurt the opponent's side of the field, and your ally Pokemon will be safe. The move comes with a base power of 70, along with a 100 percent accuracy rate.

Burning Jealousy also has a bonus effect that Burns any Pokemon that has had a stat boosted. Boosting stats is very common in Pokemon, and Burn is a devastating Status Condition as it will lower their attacking power while dealing chip damage to them all the while.

15 Inferno

Balanced Firepower

centiskorch dynamax battle

Inferno is a high-risk, high-reward move. It has only a 50 percent chance of hitting, but the trade-off is a devastating 100 base power. The good things don't stop there, as it is guaranteed to Burn the Pokemon struck by it, as well.

Burn has the potential to be one of the most powerful Status Conditions if it happens on a Physical Attacker, and there's no way to get rid of it outside the use of items. Inferno only has five uses, and despite its iffy accuracy, Inferno does quite a lot to balance those downsides out.

14 Shell Trap

Perfect For Mind Games

Turtonator in the anime using shell trap

Shell Trap is the signature move of the Fire and Dragon-Type Turtonator and one of the best counter moves in the entire game. If used and the opponent attacks with a Physical move, Shell Trap will deal out an incredible 150 base power with 100 percent accuracy.

Due to the nature of Shell Trap, it requires some reads on the opponent for what moves they plan on using. Since Turtonator is bulky with its Defense stats, it can stand to miss a few reads with it as well. It can even be used to mix up the opponent so they never know what to expect and when it's safe to attack.

13 Blaze Kick

More Than Meets The Eye

The Pokemon Blaziken charging up a fire attack.

A staple move of early Generation 3 runs with a Torchic starter, Blaze Kick is one of the best Fire-Type moves available. The accuracy is a respectable 90 percent with a base power of 85.

While this may seem low, Blaze Kick has two extra ingredients that make it powerful. One of those is that it has a chance to leave the Pokemon hit by it with a Burn. The other one is that Blaze Kick has a high critical hit ratio. Critical hits are potentially game-ending in Pokemon, so being more likely to get one makes the move worthwhile.

12 Fiery Dance

Clean Sweep

Volcarona flying beautifully through a canyon in the Pokémon anime

Fiery Dance is the signature move of the Bug and Fire-Type Volcarona, which is the reason it's one of the best Bug and Fire Pokemon in the entire game. Fiery Dance is a Special move that deals out a base power of 80 with 100 percent accuracy.

While this isn't anything special compared to other moves, it has a 50 percent chance to raise the user's Special Attack by a stage. This alone can lead to a clean sweep from Volcarona, who already has a sky-high Special Attack stat. Being able to barrage the opponent while boosting your stats isn't something many Pokemon can do, and that is why Fiery Dance is so good.

11 Fire Lash

Combo Builder

Heatmor prepares to battle in a stadium full of people

Moves that can alter the stat levels of other Pokemon always rank among the best, and Fire Lash is no exception. Fire Lash is a damaging Physical move, with a respectable base power of 80 and a 100 percent accuracy ratio.

Unlike other moves, its ability to lower the defending Pokemon's Defense stat is a guarantee rather than a possibility. Since Fire Lash itself is a Physical move, this means the next use of it will be even more damaging than the previous, making Fire Lash a perfect move to use back to back.

10 Sunny Day

Set Yourself Up For Success

Solrock using the Sunny Day move in Pokemon, lighting up the sky.

Weather and Pokemon go hand in hand, with it being a cornerstone of the series since the earliest days. Sunny Day will activate the Harsh Sunlight weather condition, which comes with a plethora of effects.

Pokemon serves up some wisdom we can all strive to learn from.

It will increase the power of all Fire-Type moves and lower the power of all Water-Type ones. Moves like Solar Beam, which usually require a turn to charge, will be activated instantly. Pokemon will also be unable to be frozen during Harsh Sunlight. Harsh Sunlight is one of the best weathers out there, rivaled only by Rain, its counterpart.

9 Eruption

Great For Bulky Or Fast Pokemon

Torkoal standing triumphant after battling in a stadium full of people in the Pokemon anime.

Eruption is perhaps the most interesting Fire-Type move in all of Pokemon. It has one of the highest base powers in the game, sitting at an incredible 150 with 100 percent accuracy. However, the power of this move is determined by how much health the user has when it's used.

The more health the user has, the more power it will have, with max health dealing max damage. The lower the health, the lower the damage, but it will never do zero damage. As such, Eruption is a fantastic first-turn play to take care of problem Pokemon quickly. In Doubles, it will hit both opponents but not your own ally, making it an even better move in that format.

8 Magma Storm

No Escape

The Pokemon Heatmor stands ready to fight, inside a volcano.

Magma Storm is Legendary Pokemon Heatran's signature move, of which only it can currently learn. Its lower accuracy of only 75 percent isn't too great, but its power is more than worth it. On a hit, Magma Storm has a fantastic base power of 100, and will also trap the opposing Pokemon. This means that the opposing Pokemon will be unable to switch out while taking a fraction of the damage each turn they're trapped.

Being unable to switch out can be a death sentence to a lot of Pokemon, especially if it's against a Pokemon they can't do much against. This makes Magma Storm one of the best trapping moves in all of Pokemon.

7 Overheat

Definition Of A Hot Tag

A shiny Incineroar being cheered on to use a Z-move.

Overheat is one of the most damaging Special Attacking Fire-Type moves in the entire game, with a base power of 130 and accuracy of 90 percent. However, its power comes at a steep cost. After using the move, its user's Special Attack Stat will harshly drop, losing two stages of it. This leaves them a lot weaker after dealing damage.

Thankfully, these stat drops only last for as long as they're on the field, meaning that once they're switched out their stats will return to normal. After the use of Overheat to deal with a problem Pokemon, its user can switch out in order to reset it for another use later in the game.

6 Pyro Ball

Shoot And Score

The Pokemon Cinderace firing off a Pyro Ball attack in a stadium of cheering fans.

One of the more unique Fire moves in Pokemon also happens to be one of the best. Cinderace's signature move is the best of the Sword & Shield starter trio as it is one of the best Physical Attacking Fire-Type moves with no recoil downside. It has a fantastic base power of 120 with a respectable 90 percent accuracy.

The worst thing about Pyro Ball is that it only has 90 percent accuracy, which is hardly a downside to begin with. Pyro Ball also has a small chance to leave the target Burned on contact. It's rare for a Physical Fire-Type move to be so threatening with no bad trade-offs, which makes Pyro Ball so good.

5 Searing Shot

A Perfect Move

The Pokemon Victini flying happily through a lush, green forest.

Another signature move, Searing Shot, is the go-to Fire-Type move for Victini. Searing Shot has some of the best damage-to-accuracy ratios, sitting at a fantastic 100 base power with 100 percent accuracy to complement it.

On top of this, Searing Shot also has one of the highest chances to leave the opponent Burned at a 30 percent chance. In Doubles, it will attack all Pokemon on the field, which can be combined with Weakness Policy to boost up your ally to take advantage of this downside. In Doubles, the potential Burn is even more devastating, especially if both Pokemon end up burned.

4 Will-O-Wisp

Burn Baby Burn

The Pokemon Chandelure, floating in the darkness with its blue and purple fires blazing.

Moves that can set Status Conditions have consistently been among the best in all of Pokemon. Will-O-Wisp also happens to be one of the best. Due to how damaging they can be, moves that set Status Conditions are often given the downside of low accuracy. Will-O-Wisp, however, possesses a high accuracy stat of 85 percent.

It will almost guarantee the target gets Burned, so long as it's not a Fire-Type Pokemon itself. Burn causes its victim to lose a bit of health at the end of each turn while halving the damage done by any Physical Attacking moves done by the opponent's Pokemon that has Burn.

3 Sacred Fire

Superior Status-faction

The legendary Pokemon Ho-oh flying in the sky, lit up with the colours of the rainbow.

Sacred Fire is one of the best Fire-Type moves out there, only slightly held back from being the absolute best by how few Pokemon can learn it. Those two Pokemon are Entei and Ho-Oh. Sacred Fire does a devastating 100 base power with a fantastic 95 percent accuracy.

Not only is Sacred Fire incredibly damaging with a high chance of successfully hitting, but it also has an incredibly high chance to Burn. Sacred Fire has an incredible 50 percent chance of leaving the opponent Burned, making it one of the best Fire moves that can set status conditions without a downside.

2 V-Create

V Is For Victory

Victini using V-Create in Pokemon Sword & Shield

V-Create is the most powerful Fire-type move in all of Pokemon. Usually, when the most powerful moves of any given type are discussed, the numbers top out at around 150. That's not the case with V-Create; this move blows all others out of the water with a blazing 180 base power.

Coupled with an impressive 95 percent accuracy V-Create is practically the perfect move. It only has two downsides. First, using it lowers the user's Defense, Special Defense, and Speed. And secondly, it's one of the signature moves of Victini, meaning you can't just slap it on your favourite Fire-type Pokemon and knock on the Elite Four's door.

1 Fire Blast

The Nuclear Option

Charizard launching a Fire Blast attack.

Fire Blast is one of the oldest Pokemon moves out there, having been in the game since the first Generation. Despite its age, Fire Blast has consistently been at the forefront of all Fire-Type Pokemon.

Most Fire Pokemon have high Special Attack stats, so a Special Attacking move with a base power of 110 is going to be amazing. It has a somewhat low accuracy of 85 percent, but its damage is more than worth it. Fire Blast is one of the most accessible Fire-Type moves in the entire game, which keeps it consistently prominent. Thanks to this, Fire Blast is the best Fire-Type move for its ease of access and power.
