There are many types of moves and types in Pokemon, and like everything there are some that stand above the others. Ground Type Pokemon are in the middle when it comes to how many exist in the games. Their move pools are surprisingly small, with only a small handful of Ground Type moves accessible.

Despite this, Ground Type Pokemon have left a mark on the competitive sphere of Pokemon as one of the best Types in the entire game. Ground Type Pokemon have access to some of the strongest Pokemon moves in all of Pokemon. Thanks to this, Ground Type Pokemon can utilize these powerful moves with ease.

Updated February 2nd, 2021 by Johnny Garcia: Pokemon remains one of the most popular video game franchises of all time, still going strong with new games on the horizon. The series has new spin-off games coming out soon with the long-awaited sequel to Pokemon Snap upon us. Pokemon Sword & Shield has also become the best-selling Pokemon game since Generation Two's Gold & Silver, making it the third best-selling Pokemon game of all time. The series shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, especially with so many Pokemon games currently available on the Switch. With rumors building up for a Generation Two Let's Go and Generation Four remakes, it's an exciting time to be a fan of the Pokemon franchise.

15 Shore Up

shiny palossand pokemon

Shore Up is the exclusive move to Palossand (and its pre-evolution Sandygast). Shore Up is a recovery move, meaning while it doesn't do damage it recovers half of your maximum HP. If used as a Z-Move, Shore Up even removes any stat debuffs from it.

If a Sandstorm is occurring, even more health is gained from using it. Since Palossand has solid HP and Defense stats, Shore Up helps to give it a ton of survivability to act as a defensive tank. Many Pokemon would love to have a recovery move, especially one that is as good as Shore Up.

14 Stomping Tantrum

Terrakian from the Pokemon Anime stomping on an enemy far below

Stomping Tantrum is a solid move with a base power of 75 and 100% accuracy. However, its power can be raised to even greater numbers. If the user of Stomping Tantrum failed their previous move, then the power of the move doubles to a devastating 150.

That's enough power to one-shot many defending Pokemon. A move failing isn't too uncommon either, as moves like Protect are rather common (especially in a Doubles Format). As such, Stomping Tantrum is a fantastic move to bring in on any Pokemon, as even its regular damage output is solid without the boost.

13 Bulldoze

Landorus being slammed into a wall from the Pokemon anime

Bulldoze is a solid utility move to help boost your odds in a battle. It doesn't have the highest base power, sitting at only 60 with 100% accuracy. What makes Bulldoze good is its secondary effect that lowers the Speed of opposing Pokemon.

Not just that, but Bulldoze is also solid in Double Battles as it's a spread move, meaning it hits all the Pokemon on the field. Your ally Pokemon can easily protect itself so it doesn't get hurt by any of the effects. It slows down the opponent as well making it easy to take care of them the next turn.

12 Thousand Waves

zygarde about to attack

Only one Pokemon in the game can learn Thousand Waves, as it's the exclusive move for the Pokemon Zygarde (its 50% Form specifically). It has a great base power of 90 that comes with an equally fantastic 100% accuracy.

Not only is Thousand Waves damaging, but it also prevents the opposing Pokemon from being able to switch out. As such, the opponent will be unable to swap into a Pokemon better equipped to deal with Zygarde. As if that wasn't already fantastic, it's a spread move that makes it even more devastating in a Doubles Battle.

11 Bonemerang

Alolan Marowak about to attack in the Pokemon anime

Bonemerang was introduced in Generation One and despite its age, the Marowak evolution tree is the only Pokemon that can learn it. It has a base power of 50 and a 90% accuracy. However, the move hits twice and hits individually.

This means that if it breaks through a Substitute with its first attack, Bonemerang's second attack will attack the Pokemon directly. It can even allow you to break through things like Focus Sash to knock out the opposing Pokemon that would otherwise survive it. Both strikes of Bonemerang have their own critical hit chance as well.

10 Fissure

Fissure is one of the oldest Ground-Type moves out there, being present since the very first Generation of PokemonIt is one of the very few Pokemon moves that are a one-hit knock-out move. Its accuracy is very low at only 30%, but if it hits it's a guaranteed faint from the opposing Pokemon. Fissure will also be more accurate if the opposing Pokemon is a lower level than its user making it easy to blow past weaker opponents. While Fissure's low accuracy is a crutch, its ability to knock out a Pokemon instantly is not to be understated. While it's not the greatest in a PvP setting, its ability in the campaign makes it worth using.

9 Dig

Dig is a part of the moves in Pokemon that last two turns, with the first turn after using it leaving its user out of harm's way. It is also one of the select few moves that can be used outside of battle, acting as a free Escape Rope. Dig's bonus effect to dodge incoming attacks is especially useful in Double Battles, where taking care of a threatening Pokemon is even more important. Dig is a great move due to this, as well as having high accuracy and solid damage when paired with Ground STAB attacks. Dig comes equipped with 100% accuracy as well as a base power of 80.

8 Precipice Blades

Precipice Blades is an exclusive Ground Type move to Legendary Pokemon Groudon. It's an incredibly powerful Ground Type move, sitting at a base power of 120. Precipice Blades doesn't have the greatest accuracy at only 85%, but its power more than makes up for it.

It's also incredible in Double Battles, as it will hit both opponents but not your ally. Since only Groudon can (currently) use Precipice Blades, its paired with a devastating attacking power that can take care of multiple Pokemon at the same time in Doubles, with a high chance of one-hit KOing.

7 Sand Attack

Perhaps one of the most frustrating moves in all of PokemonSand Attack is also one of the best moves in it. Its ability to lower the accuracy of the opposing Pokemon is a fantastic one while also having 100% accuracy. Despite most Pokemon learning it early on, it never reaches a point where it isn't useful. After a few uses of Sand Attack, it becomes almost impossible for the opposing Pokemon to make contact. Despite being a Ground Type move, it can still affect Flying Type Pokemon as well as Pokemon that have the levitate ability.

6 Sandstorm

Weather is a cornerstone of Pokemon teams, with the fifth Generation being famously known for the "Weather Wars." Sandstorm is one of the moves that set weather, that being the titular Sandstorm. It deals damage to any Pokemon that is not a Steel, Ground, or Rock Type after each turn. It will also raise the Special Defense of all Rock-Type Pokemon while it is active. It can also be paired with abilities that activate during Sandstorm, such as Sand Force, Sand Rush, and Sand Veil. These abilities help give boosts that other weather conditions usually give their respective types.

5 High Horsepower

High Horsepower is a rather basic Ground Type attack, with both solid accuracy and base power. In Pokemonbasic doesn't always mean bad, and that's why High Horsepower is so good. High Horsepower doesn't have any additional effects, be it positive or negative.

RELATED: The 15 Best Ice Pokémon

High Horsepower is one of the most damaging Ground Type moves in the game (that aren't exclusive to certain Pokemon) that doesn't also harm allies in Double Battles. Due to this, High Horsepower is one of the best Ground Type moves you can have, especially if recoil or teammate damage is a concern for your team. High Horsepower has a fantastic accuracy of 95% and a base power of 95.

4 Earth Power

Earth Power is one of the few Special Attacking Ground Type moves in the game, which just also happens to be one of the best. While most Ground Type Pokemon generally utilize Physical Attack stats, that doesn't mean Earth Power has no use. Pokemon that can learn it do sometimes have high Special Attack stats, even if they're not a Ground Type themselves. It is a damaging move with 90 baes power and 100% accuracy and even has a low chance to lower the opposing Pokemon's Special Defense stat. Thanks to this, Earth Power becomes a great choice for Pokemon that can utilize it.

3 Drill Run

Drill Run is one of the best Ground Type moves that attack a single target. It has a solid 80 base power as well as 95% accuracy, with a bonus for a secondary effect. This causes the critical hit ratio of the attacking Pokemon to be higher for the move.

RELATED: The 13 Strongest Ghost Pokémon, Ranked

Thanks to this, Drill Run is one of the best choices you can have on any Ground Type Pokemon. Even though it has lower damage than other moves, its increased critical hit ratio gives it the potential to be one of the most devastating Ground Type moves in the game.

2 Spikes

Foretress moving at high velocity in the Pokemon anime

Entry Hazards are one of the cores of the entire Pokemon metagame since they were introduced. Spikes also happens to be one of the best in the entire game. Spikes, unlike other Entry Hazards, can be stacked to do more damage than its initial power. Spikes have the potential to do over a quarter of damage to the opposing Pokemon if three layers of Spikes are down (the max). Spikes have the potential to be one of the most devastating Entry Hazards in the entire game if all the layers can get put down while remaining powerful even if you can't manage to max out on Spikes.

1 Earthquake

Earthquake has been one of the most dominant moves in Pokemon since Generation One and has been the best Ground Type Move by a wide margin even to this day. Its an incredibly powerful move with 100 base power that also has a 100% accuracy to make it all the more devastating. It's one of the handful of moves that are amazing in both Singles and Doubles. In Doubles, it attacks all Pokemon on the field which can be used to trigger Weakness Policy for your ally while dealing devastating damage to the other. The team attack effect can also be subverted with a Pokemon that is immune to Ground Type moves.
