With a total of 932 Pokemon divided into 18 different types, the best of the best are widely debated among fans. Some players go as far as to breed their Pokemon for the best stats while others just like to keep a team of Pokemon whose designs are their favorite.

Before stats or design though, a lot of players make a balanced team. A balanced team means they should not all be the same type. However, there are only six spaces in a team. Choosing six out of 18 types can be difficult.

There are some types that the Pokemon fandom prefer more than others. Some are pretty overrated though. It is good to know which are actually good and which ones are overrated. Overrated does not mean bad in this case, but it does mean that they are not as good as fans make them out to be.

20 (Best) Grass

19 tsareena

Grass-types are classic, but have become somewhat underrated in terms of what players like the most. This is because they have more weaknesses than average types and their attacks are not known to be the strongest.

However, Grass-types have unpredictability that separates them from many other types. With the right abilities, weather, and items, Grass-types can rise up to any challenge. For example: a Gourgeist with Will O’ Wisp, Leech Seed, Shadow Sneak, and Protect is amazing.

18 (Overrated) Dragon

17 ghost dragon

Dragon-types have been rumored to be the best type for quite a long time. In fact, a ton of legendary Pokemon are Dragon-type. Due to this, it is also agreed upon by many fans that the type is overrated. After all, Dragon-type moves are only super-effective against other Dragons and does absolutely nothing to Fairy.

Besides being weak to other Dragons and Fairy-types, Dragon-types are also easily taken down by Ice-types.

16 (Best) Ground

15 hippowdon

It can be easy to forget about Ground-types. They are not as popular as the three starter types or as glamorous as Dragon and Fairy. However, they are quite powerful attackers. They can cut through typically defensive types like Steel and Rock. They are also resistant to Electric.

The only type a Ground-type Pokemon should worry about is Flying.

14 (Overrated) Fire

13 pyroar

Fire-types have been overrated since the first generation when most kids picked Charmander as their starter. In fact, Charizard is the most overrated Pokemon of all time. With each new generation, Charizard typically gets special attention above other starters from the first generation.

This type is overrated for their powerful attacks and rarity in the wild. They are not as great as fans make them out to be though. They are weak to Water and Rock-types and are typically vulnerable to Ground. They are also known to have less diverse movesets.

12 (Best) Dark

11 mightyena

Dark-types get a bad rap for their many vulnerabilities to other types. However, they are super-effective against other popular types such as Psychic and Ghost-type. They can also learn some of the best moves out there such as Sucker Punch.

What makes them one of the best types is not their stats though, but their designs. Unlike other types, Dark-type often have more gritty and mature looks that a lot of fans tend to favor.

10 (Overrated) Steel

9 Aegislash

Like Dragon-types, a lot of fans believe that Steel-types are the best. This is because of their defensive builds. They can absorb certain kinds of damage that other types can't, such as Poison Spikes. Also, it is the only type with the ability to resist Dragon-types moves.

However, Fire and Ground-types can cut through Steel easily. In competitive battle, Steel-types are not as great as many fans make them out to be.

8 (Best) Ghost

7 banette

Ghost-types are one of the best types for the same reason as Dark. Fans just love their aesthetic and lore so much that they couldn't care less about stats. However, their abilities are not to scoff at either.

Normal and Fighting-types cannot hit them. It makes them the only type to have more than one immunity. That is pretty special and is often forgotten by fans. They can also have pretty effective movesets.

6 (Overrated) Fairy

5 mimikyu

Fairy-types have been overrated since they were introduced in the X and Y games. These Pokemon are the new kids on the block, and their popularity is not going to wear out anytime soon.

They are super-effective against Dragon, but are helpless against Poison and Steel-types. They are a type that was specifically made to counter Dragons. This made some fans consider Fairy-types as "game-breaking." However, they are not as hard to beat as some would have you believe. Most Pokemon can learn at least one Poison-type move.

4 (Best) Water

3 seadra

Water-types are a lot like Grass in that they are a starter-type that get overshadowed by Fire-types. They are super-effective against Fire, Rock, and Ground-types as well as normally effective against Steel. This makes them an effective counter to many defensive typings.

Additionally, many Water-types have access to the move "Aqua Ring" which is one of the few consistent healing moves in the game.

2 (Overrated) Fighting

1 machamp

Like how Charizard leads to charge to overrated Fire-types, Lucario does so for the Fighting-types. However, Fighting is weak to Fairy, Psychic, Flying, and Ghost-types (many of which are pretty popular).

Fighting is even overrated in the games themselves, as many fans have grown tired of Fire-type starters becoming part Fighting-type when fully evolved.
