The App Store for iOS devices has revealed the release date for the upcoming mobile version of Pokémon Quest, which was originally revealed to be coming to phones and smart devices in late June. The store page for Pokémon Quest is listing June 28th as the release date for the game.
Pokémon Quest is a game that allows you to control a group of three Pokémon, which you can use to explore the mysterious island of Tumblecore. This involves missions where you fight off groups of enemy Pokémon and collecting materials that you can use to attract new wild Pokémon to your base camp. The Pokémon that you will encounter in Pokémon Quest all come from Pokémon Red & Blue, which ties into the resurgence of popularity of the Kanto region and the original Pokémon games.
Pokémon Quest was announced during the same press conference that officially revealed Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu & Pokémon Let's Go Eevee to the world, so it slipped under the radar in terms of coverage. Pokémon Quest was initially only available on the Nintendo Switch, which meant that a much smaller percentage of the audience had a chance to play it than what is expected of the mobile phone audience.
The reception to Pokémon Quest for the Nintendo Switch was mixed, due to the fact that it has a lot of the negative free-to-play elements that are commonplace in mobile games. These kinds of titles aren't as appreciated on a system that can play titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Fortnite, due to the stellar line-up of games that are already available for the Switch.
The simple and casual nature of Pokémon Quest will likely be far more appreciated on smart devices, where many of the most popular games are designed to be played in small bursts of free time. Pokémon Quest is a great "pick up and play" kind of game and the freemium elements aren't as obnoxious when it is played in a five or ten minute period.
Pokémon Quest will be coming to Android and iOS devices on June 28th.
