There are a couple of different legendary Pokémon in the franchise. Legendary Pokémon are not like regular Pokémon because they are stronger and usually a lot older than other Pokémon. Mewtwo is one of the first legendary Pokémon that were discussed in the franchise and was the main theme from Pokémon: The First Movie.

Mewtwo was created in a lab by the genetic material of Mew, a very rare legendary Pokémon. As a result of his creation, he was not shown any kindness and therefore did not know how to give it himself. Mewtwo is a genetic masterpiece and was given many of the best parts as Mew, some of them even more powerful than the original. As a result, he is extremely hard to beat and it takes a lot to catch him if you are ever lucky enough to encounter him in a game.

Even though Mewtwo has a lot of strengths, he does have a couple of weaknesses that can be very helpful to know. On this list, there are both his strengths and weaknesses so trainers can get a better idea of how to take on a Mewtwo and maybe even add one to their team.

Mewtwo has considerable strength, as readers will no doubt learn in this article. But there are also some surefire ways to take down this great Pokémon, ones that we're sure he would rather are kept hidden. Buckle in, and let's learn about Mewtwo.

20 Superpower: Erase Memories

via: splashbrush.deviantart.com

One of Mewtwo’s most powerful abilities is that he is able to erase people’s memories and make them remember as much or as little as he wants. In the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo uses this ability to erase the mind of Nurse Joy and stole her.

He uses her as his personal assistant to lure all of the young trainers to him so he can clone their Pokémon.

With minimal effort, Mewtwo is able to erase all of a trainer or Pokémon's memory about the things that they experienced in the past and the people that they met along the way.

19 Weakness: Struggle Bug

via: phonemobber.deviantart.com

Even though Mewtwo is a legendary Pokémon and has a very big advantage over regular Pokémon, he does have some weaknesses that will make beating him in battle a little bit easier. One move that seems to deal at least a little bit of damage to this powerful legendary Pokémon is struggle bug. It makes a ton of sense that this move would work against Mewtwo, as he is a psychic type Pokémon so he is weak against bug type Pokémon. Before attempting to use your bug type Pokémon in battle, be sure to level up your Pokémon so they can withstand Mewtwo’s attack.

18 Superpower: Flying

Mewtwo

This is another superpower that Mewtwo demonstrated in the first Pokémon movie. Mewtwo has the power to fly, not the typical flap your wings and soar type of fly. Instead, he levitates his entire body off of the ground to have an advantage over his foe.

When he gets into a battle with Mew at the end of the movie, the entire battle takes place in the sky.

This is high above the makeshift stadium that Mewtwo has created. Mew is able to fly easily and pretty much never lands, so it only makes sense that Mewtwo has the same powers as he was made from Mew’s DNA.

17 Weakness: Fury Cutter

via: pokemongoapkfree.com

Fury Cutter is another good attack to have up your sleeve when you find yourself in a battle with Mewtwo. Scizor is a good choice when you are planning on battling a Mewtwo, as they are a bug type and typically know the move Fury Cutter.

If leveled up properly they will be able to withstand a couple of big hits from Mewtwo.

Fury Cutter is a bug type move that, although it doesn’t deliver a ton of damage, is almost always accurate and hits the opponent. This move starts out with a power of ten and every time that it is used successfully its power increases with a maximum of 160.

16 Superpower: Communicate With Humans

via: livinlovindude.deviantart.com

Most of the time humans and trainers can only take an educated guess as to what Pokémon want and are trying to tell them. Mewtwo, however, is not a typical Pokémon as he was man-made in a laboratory. As a result, he has powers that most Pokémon do not.

He is able to communicate with humans with ease.

This is one of the main reasons that he considers himself a Pokémon trainer as opposed to a Pokémon. In the movie, Mewtwo is able to have full on conversations with all of the trainers and explain his point of view on society as a whole, something that has almost never been done.

15 Weakness: Hex

Mewtwo

Mewtwo is also weak to ghost type moves such as Hex. It is always a good idea to use a Gengar when battling a Mewtwo because they are powerful enough to hold their own against a Mewtwo, as long as they are leveled up enough, and also almost always learn this move at some point in their training.

Hex is a ghost type move that starts off already pretty powerful at 65 in the newer generation and doubles when it is used successfully!

This is a massive attack that will do a ton of damage to an enemy that is on the other end.

14 Superpower: Translate Pokémon Language

via: pinterest.com

Another thing that Mewtwo is able to do is to translate Pokémon language. This is very helpful when Pokémon are trying to communicate with their trainers, it also may be the reason that Mewtwo’s own Pokémon are so well trained and powerful. It makes complete and total sense that Mewtwo can speak Pokémon language seeing as he is technically a Pokémon himself. During the first Pokémon movie, he is seen talking to Pokémon at various points and this ability is the one that stops him in his tracks when he begins his mission to destroy the world that we know.

13 Weakness: Shadow Ball

Mewtwo Fighting Mew

Another ghost type move that is a good idea to use against Mewtwo in a battle is shadow ball. Like the previous one, this is a ghost type move so Mewtwo is already susceptible to receiving damage from it.

As always, a Gengar who knows this move will be a great idea in a battle with Mewtwo because they are powerful and hold their own in battle.

Shadow Ball is a ghost type move that has 100% accuracy and deals 80 damage to its opponent. This move also has a 20% chance of lowering the targets special defense by one stage.

12 Superpower: Block Special Abilities

via: wyvernsmasher.deviantart.com

Mewtwo is one of the most powerful Pokémon in the world and his ability to block special powers and abilities is one of the reason. If you have ever fought a Mewtwo in one of the games, then you may know how frustrating it can be to think you have the perfect team and then have Mewtwo block your Pokémon's special ability. This move is a powerful one because it allows Mewtwo to get the upper hand in a battle even when he is battling against someone who should be able to beat him with ease. Mewtwo can block any special abilities, none are safe from this Pokémon.

11 Weakness: Crunch

Mewtwo

Mewtwo is also weak towards dark type moves like Crunch. Although this may not seem like a very powerful move that can take down a legendary Pokémon, it is actually one of the fastest moves out there that deals a decent amount of damage. It is always a good idea to scoop up a Houndoom when you come across one because they can be more helpful then you may think. Although this Pokémon doesn’t have the highest CP, it is still pretty high up there and can learn a lot of attacks that will be helpful when fighting a Pokémon like Mewtwo.

10 Superpower: Materialize Psychic Waves

Mewtwo

Psychic type Pokémon are some of the most powerful Pokémon because they are able to manipulate their opponent with psychic waves that they send through the air. Mewtwo’s abilities take this a step further as he is able to materialize psychic waves and use them against his opponents in a more powerful fashion.

This is extremely helpful when he is fighting other legendary Pokémon such as Mew because it gives him yet another upper hand.

Mewtwo is able to materialize these psychic waves because of his signature move, Psystrike. This is a damage dealing psychic type move that was first introduced in the fifth generation of the game.

9 Weakness: Tyranitar

via: youtube.com

If you are lucky enough to have a Tyranitar on your team, then you will definitely give Mewtwo a run for his money when you encounter him. Tyranitar is one of the strongest Pokémon to date and he will be able to deal massive damage to Mewtwo simply because of this.

Tyrantiar is actually a common weakness for most legendary Pokémon.

He can learn a ton of moves such as crunch and bite, these moves will deal double damage to Psychic legendary Pokémon such as Mewtwo. Tyrantiar is the strongest around and therefore one of the hardest Pokémon to even come in contact with, never mind actually catch.

8 Superpower: Levitation

Mewtwo & Ash

Mewtwo is not only able to levitate himself off of the ground and into the air, but he is also able to levitate other Pokémon, humans and even objects into the air when he so chooses. Mewtwo did this numerous times in Pokémon: The First Movie when he was battling with the trainers and Mew.

Mewtwo and Mew began battling in the air but eventually, Mew got Mewtwo to see that what he was doing was wrong and the two made amends.

At the end of the movie, Mewtwo takes all of the Pokémon that he was created and levitates them into the air. He decides to seek a better life for them and himself where everyone can live in peace.

7 Weakness: Sucker Punch

Fanart Of Mewtwo

Sucker Punch is another move that you should look for if you are planning on taking on Mewtwo. This move is a dark type move that is always 100% accurate in hitting its target. This move is also used before all other moves so it will give your team a bit of an advantage when fighting Mewtwo. Like we mentioned before, Mewtwo typically uses Me First in battle. This move allows Mewtwo to attack first, however with sucker punch Me First does not affect it and it will still be dealt first. This move can be taught to a huge array of Pokémon so it shouldn’t be hard to get.

6 Superpower: Mind Control

via: reddit.com

Mewtwo loves power, some might even call him power hungry. One thing that fuels his desire for obtaining power over both Pokémon and their trainers is all of his special abilities.

Mewtwo is able to mind control both humans and Pokémon to make them do what he wants.

Mewtwo demonstrated how strong his mind control abilities were when he stole Nurse Joy and used her as a way to persuade some of the most powerful trainers to come to his island for a battle. Nurse Joy had no idea what she was doing or where she was until she was awoken by Brock and Misty after the fighting ensued on the island.

5 Weakness: X-Scissor

yongja.artstation.com
Mewtwo Interpretation

X-Scissor may not seem like a move that is all that great, but it will actually deal a great deal of damage to Mewtwo when dealt by a well leveled up Pokémon. Scizor is a great Pokémon to use against Mewtwo because he is made of metal which means that he is able to defend itself against Mewtwo’s advances. This is a bug type move that has a power of 80 and is always 100% accurate. There is, however, no secondary effects of this move so if your Pokémon is not leveled up very high then this move may not be very effective.

4 Superpower: Conserve Energy

3nrique.deviantart.com
Fanart of Mewtwo

If you have ever battled a Mewtwo in one of the games, then you may have noticed a couple of things about him. First off that he seems to not do any moves for an elongated period of time and second that he seems to last forever in battle. This may be because Mewtwo has a tendency and ability to conserve his energy in order to use in battle. By conserving his energy, Mewtwo makes his moves more powerful and deals a greater amount of damage to his foes. Mewtwo remains motionless in battle in order to unleash his full power on those who threaten him.

3 Weakness: Shadow Claw

dragyen.deviantart.com
Fanart of Mewtwo

As per usual, Mewtwo is very susceptible to Ghost type moves and can receive a great deal of damage if he is hit by them. Shadow Claw is a ghost type move that has proven to be pretty effective toward Mewtwo. Shadow Claw deals a damage of 70 and is always 100% accurate. If your Pokémon does not learn this move on their own then it can be taught using a TM, TM65 to be exact. This move is another one that has an increased critical hit ratio, meaning that it gets more powerful as it proves to be successful.

2 Superpower: Me First

via: zenity.deviantart.com

This move is a move that Mewtwo seems to favor in battle. Me First is a status move where the user who uses it goes ahead of the target in order to steal and use the target’s intended move. Not only does this move steal the move that the opponent was planning on using but it deals the move with even more strength then it was originally intended. Mewtwo likes to use this move to surprise his target and throw them off their game. So if you ever encounter Mewtwo in a game then be on your toes as he may use your own moves against you.

1 Weakness: Emotions

via: youtube.com

Now, this weakness of Mewtwo’s is a lot different than the other ones on this list, but emotions are a weakness of this Mew clone. Mewtwo was created in a laboratory and therefore did not receive or witness much kindness in its early existence.

When he escapes from the lab he goes on a bit of a rampage and tries to create a new world that he believes will be better.

After an encounter with some trainers and Pokémon, Mewtwo realizes that he is wrong about humanity and sets off on a journey to find peace. Emotions are a weakness of his because he doesn’t know how to express his own or deal with others.
