Pokémon Sword and Shield bring back a lot of popular Pokémon from previous generations. This time we're focusing on Tyrogue, a unique Fighting-type that can evolve into three different Pokémon. Its evolutions are the well-known combat specialists Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Hitmontop. Whether you want your Pokémon to box, kickbox, or get down with capoeira, we've got you covered.

Tyrogue was introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver as the baby Pokémon that Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee come from. Those games also added Hitmontop, a brand new third member of the evolved family. Like the other baby Pokémon, Tyrogue is meant to evoke the immature form of its later evolutions. Its small stature, body markings that look like bandages, and habit of always starting brawls give off the impression of an undisciplined young fighter. When it evolves, it learns one of three martial arts that comes to define its look.

Tyrogue has the highest chance of appearing in the Rolling Fields area pictured below. Typically it has about a 5% chance of spawning right out in the wild for you to see. If you wait for overcast weather, however, the chance will shoot up to 28%. Still not the best, but it's Tyrogue's highest appearance rate.

Tyrogue can also appear in the Dappled Grove, Giant's Seat, South Lake Miloch, Stony Wilderness, and West Lake Axewell areas. The Stony Wilderness has a 15% chance of spawning Tyrogue, and they'll be about 20 levels higher than those found in the Rolling Fields.

If for some reason you'd rather get a Tyrogue through Max Raid Battles, it will appear in raid dens in the Dusty Bowl, North Lake Miloch, Rolling Fields, South Lake Miloch, and Stony Wilderness.

How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Or Hitmontop

Evolving Tyrogue is easy, but also a process you can't entirely control. Tyrogue will evolve into Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Or Hitmontop at level 20. Which one it becomes is based on its Attack and Defense stats.

  • If Defense is greater than Attack, Tyrogue will become Hitmonchan.
  • If Attack is greater than Defense, Tyrogue will become Hitmonlee.
  • If Attack and Defense are equal, Tyrogue will become Hitmontop.

You can influence the Attack and Defense stats using EVs somewhat, but its best to just catch a Tyrogue that's already naturally high in the stats for your desired evolution.

Alternatively, you can try to catch the evolved trio in the wild. All three can appear in Max Raid Battles in the Rolling Fields, South Lake Miloch, and Stony Wilderness. Hitmonchan has a 5% chance of appearing in the Dusty Bowl area in Shield, whereas Hitmonlee has a 5% of appearing in the Dusty Bowl in Sword. Hitmontop has a 2% chance of appearing at the Lake of Outrage in both versions.

What Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, And Hitmontop Do In Battle

Unfortunately for fans of these three nostalgic Pokémon, none of them are considered strong competitive picks. But if you're just trying to get through the story or have fun with friends, there are a few ways to deck out the Hitmon crew for success.

Hitmonchan can be a great Pokémon for coverage thanks to the various elemental punches. Many opponents will see the Fighting-type come out and throw a Flying-type to counter it. That's when you bring out Thunder Punch or Ice Punch.

Hitmonlee shines when its trainer takes advantage of its abilities. In particular, Unburden can be amazing if used well. Give Hitmonlee an item that will be consumed on the first turn, like a berry. This will double its speed. Then Hitmonlee should go first and hopefully sweep through the opposing team before they get a chance to react.

Hitmontop has some utility as a support Pokémon. Its Intimidate ability can weaken the opponent's hardest hitter. Its Rapid Spin attack will clear stage hazards like Stealth Rock or Spikes. Consider saving Hitmontop for the middle of the battle so it can react to whatever dangers the opponent presents.
