Pokémon Trainers who were unlucky enough to own a male Shiny Salandit needn't worry anymore, as a new glitch allows a Pokémon to evolve into its female form, even if it's gender-locked.

There are some Pokémon that can only evolve if they belong to a specific gender, such as a female Combee being able to evolve into Vespiquen, while male Combee cannot evolve at all. Gender-locked evolutions can make things really annoying for Shiny Hunters, as it's possible to find Shiny versions of the genders of Pokémon that cannot evolve.

A new glitch has been discovered in Pokémon Sword & Shield that allows trainers to force Pokémon to evolve into their second or third forms while still as an egg. Reddit user named Jenky91 has worked out a variant of the glitch that allows a Pokémon in the third slot to evolve into its next form, even if it's gender-locked, which will change the gender of the Pokémon. The example that Jenky91 used turned a male Salandit into a female Salazzle.

The mechanics of the glitch involve having a fully evolved Pokémon in the first slot of the party, a Pokémon of the same type as the one in the egg in the second slot, and the egg in the third slot. It's possible to access information about the egg by quickly pressing down and A together, which includes using items on the egg. This glitch allows the trainer to use an experience points candy on the second Pokémon in the party, but it actually affects the egg. Jenky91's version of the glitch has caused the male Salandit to evolve into a female Salazzle through a similar method of using experience points candy on an existing Pokémon through the selection glitch, causing it to then evolve into the Pokémon in the second slot.

This isn't the first time that Pokémon genders have switched due to a programming oversight. Until Pokémon X & Y, it was possible for one out of every three female Azurill to evolve into a male Marill. Mr. Mime was also named before the concept of gender for Pokémon was introduced to the series, which meant that female Mr. Mime used male pronouns. This distinction only exists in the English and French versions of Pokémon, as Mr. Mime is called Barrierd in Japan.

Game Freak has the ability to patch Pokémon games, so it's likely that this glitch won't be around for long. Those who want their Shiny Pokémon to have a sex change in order to evolve will need to act fast before the ability to do so is patched out.
