The Pokemon training card game is known for being a little less complicated than other TCGs, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! or Magic: The Gathering, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to work out some great strategies if you can figure out exactly what kind of playstyle your deck is most suited to.

While that's a big factor, there are some cards that are extremely in the meta right now that are downright disrespectful. Most of the meta cards right now are Vs, VMaxes, GXs, or the occasional leftover tag-team, but there are also some plain cards with great abilities.

Updated March 13th, 2021 by Johnny Garcia: The Pokemon TCG has been consistently growing in popularity as a collectible card game thanks to popular internet personalities. The Sets don't stop coming out either, with Sword & Shield: Battle Styles on the horizon, not to mention the McDonald's Pokemon packs. The last Set, Sword & Shield: Shining Fates made a large splash on the meta, with the next one looking to do more of the same. With so many Sets being released and tons of products being made, it's one of the best times to get into the Pokemon TCG. Powercreep is common in almost every card game, and Pokemon is no exception.

15 Quick Ball

Quick Ball is a Trainer card that is practically in every deck is playing at max quantity. Since so many decks revolve around a specific Pokemon, being able to search them out is a very powerful effect.

Quick Ball does require you to discard another card in order to use it, however, this is hardly a downside. In Pokemon, drawing cards is very easy, so it's not uncommon to have excess cards in hands. Quick Ball's ability to fetch any Basic Pokemon to fantastic, especially when all GX and V Pokemon are Basics.

14 Dedenne GX

pokemon tcg dedenne gx both arts

Dedenne GX is something that fits into any deck, including ones that do not even play any Lightning Energy. This is due to its ability Dedechange. Whenever you play Dedenne GX from your hand to the bench, you can discard your hand and draw six cards.

This ability doesn't have any kind of requirement, so even if you only have one card in your hand you can still draw six new ones. If your hand is really bad, this can even be used as a mulligan to help fix your hand.

13 Jirachi (Team Up)

jirachi cards from team up set

Trainer cards are some of the best kinds of cards in the entire Pokemon TCG. So, when a Pokemon has the ability to add those into your hand it's bound to be busted. Enter Jirachi from the Sun & Moon: Team Up Expansion.

If Jirachi is your Active Pokemon, you can look at the top five cards of your deck and add a Trainer card from there to your hand. Jirachi becomes asleep after this, but the trade-off is more than worth it. This has the potential to set you up for the rest of the game.

12 Boss's Orders

pokemon tcg boss's orders both arts

Boss's Orders takes the cake for the best generic Supporter card. Its effect is incredibly simple, allowing you to switch your opponent's Active Pokemon with one of their benched ones.

This can drag in a Pokemon that hasn't been set up at all, and allow you to swiftly take care of them before they even have the chance to. It can also bring in a Pokemon that's close to being knocked out to gain Prize cards. This is especially useful to take out weakened VMax and GX Pokemon for maximum value.

11 Welder

pokemon tcg welder both card versions

Welder is the best Supporter card in the game. It has so much value for no cost at all. Only decks that run Fire Type Energy can utilize it, but there isn't a single deck that can play Welder that isn't.

Welder lets you put two Fire Energy Cards onto a Pokemon and draw three cards afterward. Not only does Welder give you an insane boost in Energy presence, but Welder replaces the three cards you just played from your hand right away. Welder gives you so much card advantage for no downside, it's shocking it was ever printed.

10 Inteleon Vmax

pokemon tcg inteleon vmax both arts

The whole strategy behind Inteleon VMax is to prevent the opposing Pokemon from ever being able to get their big moves off. What happens generally if you use a good few Hydro Snipes is that you remove an Energy card from your opponent, while also delivering 60 damage. It may be a little cheap, but it gets the job done!

It can also be combined with cards like Crushing Hammer, which also remove energies, meaning your opponent never gets ahead.

9 Centiskorch Vmax

pokemon tcg centiskorch both arts

Centiskorch VMax kind of uses a similar gimmick to the Inteleon Vmax card, removing energies and whatnot from the opponent, but in addition to this ability, he has an absolutely ridiculous ability that allows him to do 40 damage for each fire energy card he has attached.

And to make matters worse, as long as he did any damage with the attack, the player can attach a Fire Energy from their discard pile to him.

8 Eternatus Vmax

Eternatus VMax might not be as outright ridiculous as Centiscorch, but Eternatus definitely has some tricks up their sleeves.

The main one being that if you have enough dark types for it (which you will if you're playing a dark type deck), you can use his ability to put 8 dark type Pokemon onto your bench, making for a whopping 9 Pokemon in play. Eternatus also does 30 damage for dark type in play with one of his attacks.

7 Mewtwo And Mew GX

If it was possible to use more than one GX move in a game, the Mewtwo and Mew tag-team GX card would be absolutely unbeatable, and that's saying something considering the fact that this ultra-rare already crushes most matches it's put in.

Not only can it heal the entire team of Pokemon that's out, but it also has the ability to use any of the attacks that any GX or EX on the bench or in the discard pile.

6 Zacian V

Zacian V is essentially just a powerhouse, there's really no other way to put it. Even the ability the card has isn't super impressive, just helpful. If a player were to get lucky enough to get Zacian V out, look at their deck (only the top 3 cards), and hope for a Steel Energy and somehow get all three for his attack, it's pretty much over.

Brave Blade, does 230 damage, with the downside that Zacian can't attack during the next turn. That doesn't even matter given the card's 220 hp.

5 Coalossal VMax

pokemon tcg coalossal vmax both arts

Coalossal VMax hasn't yet gotten a release in the US or a lot of the rest of the world, but it's out in Japan and it's truly insane. The Vmax card allows you to check your top card for an Energy.

If it is an Energy, then you get to add it to your Pokemon and attack for a total of 130 damage in addition to the 40 it would have done otherwise. Then, there's G-Max Boulder which does 240 damage for only 4 Energies.

4 Pikachu And Zekrom Tag Team

Pikachu and Zekrom GX

The thing that makes the Pikachu and Zekrom Tag Team card so useful is how well it's able to make sure that all the bases are covered.

The card has an ability that basically sets up its big attack, which allows you to search for three Electric Energy, add them to your card, and then shuffle, and once that's done, you do 200 damage to the opponent's active Pokemon and 170 to any benched Pokemon you want. This is one mascot card you don't want to miss.

3 Polteageist V

pokemon tcg poltegaeist v art and text

Polteageist absolutely relies on having a pretty strange deck that's been set up specifically for this Pokemon. It only makes sense that a Ghost-type would revolve around such a strange strategy.

Basically, your deck should be absolutely full of Pokemon that know the attack Mad Party. For each of the Pokémon that know the attack in the discard pile, Polteageist's Mad Party does 20 damage. It's not as big and beefy as a lot of others, but for stage 1, it can't be beaten.

2 Vikavolt V

pokemon tcg vikavolt v both arts

Yet another card on this list that isn't exactly a crazy powerful heavy hitter, this card mostly exists to be absolutely rude to your opponent, since one of Vikavolt V's abilities is that the opponent is unable to use any item cards on their next turn.

Other than that attack, it has a move capable of doing 190 damage.

1 Reshiram And Charizard Tag Team

pokemon tcg reshiram and charizard gz both arts

Reshiram and Charizard together are about as powerful together as can be expected. One of their abilities allows them to add 10 damage to the attack per damage counter on the Pokemon, basically returning all of the damage it's taken.

Then there's Flare Strike, which does 230 damage with the only stipulation being that it can't be used again next turn. The big one though is Double Blaze-GX, which does a whopping 300 damage that isn't affected by effects.
