The Pokemon card market is in a great place right now. At least, as far as sellers are concerned. Buyers beware, because there are big bucks to be spent on not only the classics, but even some newer cards.

Among those cards are plenty of original Gen 1 Pokemon like Blastoise. Fueled by nostalgia unending, collectors will duke it out well into the hundreds of dollars range. Among these watery giants, the following ten cards will crack your wallet the hardest, but check back with us on occasion, because we're keeping track of the ever-fluctuating Pokemon TCG market so you don't have to.

Updated on August 15, 2022 by Quinton O'Connor: Good news for collectors! Prices are down across the board right now. Not to a tremendous degree, and we anticipate they'll rise all over again when Pokemon Scarlet & Violet enters the TCG scene in November. So, you know, strike while the iron's hot.

10 Mega XY Evolutions EX Full Art ($30)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

The XY - Evolutions EX full art card of Mega Blastoise may just be $30, but it happens to feature arguably the best card art on this entire list. Having the bold Japanese lettering on the front mix with the colorful background makes the card itself pop incredibly.

This card was released as part of a set that's less than six years old at this point, so it's safe to assume that the value will continue to climb over time.

9 XY Promo EX ($50)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

Despite some cards being included as promo cards in boxed products, it's surprising how much value they can hold as time goes on. One of those cards is a Blastoise EX promo card from the Pokemon XY set that released in 2013.

This promo goes for around $50 on average and has a brilliant piece of full art on the front which features Blastoise, but also includes art of both Gyarados and Vaporeon. In some ways, owners are getting three Pokemon cards in one as the secondary Pokemon are obvious and present in the art.

8 EX Crystal Guardians ($65)

Blastoise TCG Delta Species Pokemon

EX Crystal Guardians Blastoise is a Fighting-type! That alone warrants some head-tilting. But wait! There's more. It's also a Steel type. For a while, the Pokemon TCG experimented with dual-typing. Nowadays, that tends to happen only very rarely, and when it does, it's through an Ability rather than a full denotation that exists separately from its powers.

All told, it's quite the card.

7 Base Set 2 ($70)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

Now, the Base Set 2 cards are often looked at as the younger sibling of the initial Base Set and First Edition Base Set collections, which go for a lot of money, but Base Set 2 has plenty of value itself.

The card is almost identical to the iconic original card everyone is familiar with, except this version features a logo with the number two and a Poke Ball on the middle right of the card. Those who are unconcerned with the quality of the card can get one for $35, but those who want one in mint condition will have to provide around $70, give or take.

6 Unbroken Bonds GX Secret Rare ($80)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

One of the cooler hidden gems of the Pokemon Trading Card Game are the secret rares included in sets of cards. They're not divulged in preview lists that feature all the cards in the set, and most fans won't know what the secret rares of a new set are until someone pulls them.

The Unbroken Bonds set of the Pokemon Sun & Moon series was home to a Blastoise GX secret rare card that brilliantly displayed the Kanto Water-type starter under a stunning rainbow-colored overlay and can be purchased for $80 on average.

5 Base Set ($120)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

Any kid who fell in love with Pokemon in the 90s should get a jolt of nostalgia the moment they lay eyes on this card. The art and design of the original base set of cards have been etched into the memory of an entire generation.

Despite Blastoise also appearing in its own game, its cards don't hold equal value to Charizard. Its base set card goes for around $120, and though that may seem like a lot, it's important to Google prices of Charizard cards to provide some valuable context via comparison.

4 Plasma Storm Secret Rare ($185)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

Before the days of secret rares in Pokemon sets being covered in a rainbow gradient, they simply had a gold border. The Blastoise secret rare from the Pokemon Black & White Plasma Storm set was just that and released in the set back in 2013.

The card tends to go for around $185 right now, but keep tabs, because it's climbed upward of $400 in recent months.

3 EX FireRed/LeafGreen ($215)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

It's a real shame that the Blastoise ex card from the FireRed & LeafGreen set is worth so much considered the card is pretty ugly overall. Not only is the art itself rather dark and unflattering to the majestic creature, but the borders and design of the set feel unorthodox, and not in a good way.

Collectors or Pokemon fans who couldn't care less (or who disagree) will need to have $215 in hand to call this card theirs. Pricing is all over the place though, as some outlets have it listed for around $300.

2 Team Rocket Dark Blastoise (Holo Rare Version) ($270)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

"Ordinary" Team Rocket Dark Blastoise cards tend to hit around $15 on the open market, but the Holo Rare version remains the hotness, clocking in at $270 on average this year. That's a huge difference, and it showcases just how much range one card can command between its familiar look and its far luckier cousin.

1 Base Set Shadowless ($600)

Pokemon Blastoise Card

The difference here is all in the card design. "Shadowless" refers to the first printing of cards that had no drop shadows to the text of the card and had fewer dark spots in the coloration of the overall card background.

For Blastoise, this card regularly goes for about $600. Remember, though, that if graded highly, the value skyrockets and this card easily makes it into a place in which multiple thousands of dollars would need to be spent.
