For so many of gamers that started out with the original 150 Pokémon, the Dragon-types were always a very rare and powerful kind. While they've since spread their reach to more accessible Pokémon, their claim to power is still very real. Sporting some of the most powerful attacks in the game, players of all stripes would be wise to have at least one Dragon at their beck and call.

Since its start in 1996, the Pokémon card game has come and gone in waves. Types rise and fall in power, depending on the environment and playable cards at the time. While every type has it's day, Dragon types are consistently some of the highest HP and heavily weaponized cards in the game - 10 of which have been listed here because they're the best of the best. Basing decks around these cards will mean a lot of the games will be over in a flash if the player uses them right.

10 Rayquaza GX

The serpentine dragon has been a standout since his debut in Ruby/Sapphire, consistently taking the number one spot in this category. He was even given his own game in Emerald that lets players fill their squad up with all the legendaries in Generation 3.

In its basic form, it separates itself from the rest of the pack by being one of the only powerhouses that players can build a reliable Dragon-Type deck off of. Though like many popular Pokémon, Rayquaza has many powered up forms that make it an even better bet for players who don't mind a little risk.

9 Haxorus

The territorial dragon has made its first appearance sooner than most on this list, introducing itself to players in Generation 5. With large blade-like tusks jutting out of its mouth, it's no surprise this Dragon deals out some big damage.

Coming in with a good HP base always helps, especially when you combine with massive damage dealing blows. The effect of this card means that every time you throw one of its already hefty attacks, 100 more damage will be done as long as it's your main offence. This leaves a lot of room for one-hit KO's, making it a bona fide player's hole in one.

8 Garchomp

Despite being able to fly, Garchomp actually doubles as Ground-type. Luckily, this doesn't affect his pretty remarkable speed, a trait that isn't too common in the hefty Dragon-type Pokémon. With the added benefit of a pretty slick look, players will get a great type combination with a jet plan aesthetic.

With a versatile move set that will range from coin flipping risks to energy requirements, Garchomp's card set covers a lot of variables. That combined with the amazing artwork makes for an effective card that's sure to impress in action. A good offensive lead is always in need and Garchomp certainly fits the bill.

7 Ultra Necrozma

While Necrozma in its original form isn't a Dragon-type, Ultra Necrozma combines its original psychic origins with the light-bearing Dragon form that it takes on. The reason for its strange appearance is unknown but it's rumored that it came to this planet long ago and absorbs light for power.

Even though one of its attacks' initial power is negligent and can only deal 20 damage, players with enough energy cards to burn can add 80 more points per card. This makes it a one-hit-wonder that can take out any Pokémon it encounters with the right cards. If players build an efficient deck around it, Necrozma is a true destroyer.

6 Noivern

Noivern is one of the most intimidating combinations of creatures in the Pokémon world, slapping a bat and a dragon together for something no one wants to bump into in a dark alley. Piercing teeth and talon-like claws are the tools of choice that will ultimately take down its opponents, and a serious attitude problem makes it one of the most ferocious Dragon-types out there.

Of its entire arsenal of skills, one of the most effective is its ability to deal widespread damage across a whole field. While it's not devastating damage like some of the Pokémon on this list, Noivern can hack away at an entire roster with ease. It also has a unique ability to cancel enemy damage on a coinflip, meaning players don't have to rush to the finish line with powerful blows.

5 Reshiram

The change seeking legendary with some serious firepower, Reshiram is a legendary Pokémon with a cause that it's not afraid to share. Only helping those it deems worthy and with the goal of creating a better world, it's one players don't want standing on the opposite side of a battlefield - especially when it gets angry.

Though it does have some devastating power if players have the energy cards for it, Reshiram really comes in handy for team strategies. With attacks like Flame Charge and Vermillion, players can prep for more than just this battering ram with these card stockpiling moves.

4 Dragonite

Though its sizes are all over the place especially when comparing the anime to the game, Dragonite is one of the original tanks players saw and still love. From as big as a lighthouse to relatively human-sized creature, Dragonite captured Pokémon fans' attention from day one. With it's warm and loving nature, this hulking beast resembles a Snorlax more than its fellow dragon Charizard.

The classic bulk build, Dragonite needs a lot of energy for big boy attacks, meaning players have to stockpile a lot of support if they want to get him moving. If they can back him correctly though, Dragonite has some the most powerful attacks in the game, doling out an impressive 200 damage.

3 Hydreigon

Coming out like a winged Hydra, this Pokémon gives three heads for the price of one. However, those supporting heads don't have their own brains or act independently. Anyone that comes across it will have to deal with that incredibly aggressive brain in all three heads. This Dragon isn't the sentimental type, as Hydreigon will attack anything that moves close enough to it.

With that aggressive attitude, players will find a string of impulsive attacks that inflict damage to both you and the opponent or has damage multipliers that will blow any conventional attack out of the water. It also makes for a pretty great setup card if players are in need of some support energy from the deck.

2 Kingdra

The long awaited third evolution of the original Horsea, Kingdra adds a little draconic flair to the Water-type. It's definitely not the most intimidating looking Pokémon of the Dragon-type roster but players shouldn't let appearances fool them. Standing at almost six feet tall, Kingdra is powerful enough to create above water tornadoes and influence the currents of the ocean.

The real power in Kingdra's attack is the range of Pokémon that it can attack on the opponents' side. Hitting three Pokémon at once or misdirecting an attack at a benched Pokémon can come in handy when trying to chip away at otherwise hard to reach opponents.

1 Drampa

Drampa is possibly the most friendly-looking Dragon-type in the entire Pokédex, and that's saying a lot when Dragonite exists. This dragon is a notoriously gentle soul that lives high up in the mountains where no one can get at it until it decides to grace us with its presence.

Following suit with its gentle disposition, players won't get the devastating attacks they've been accustomed to with Dragons unless they delve into the GX pool. Drampa does, however, distribute energy cards, giving the team an added boost when needed. If players have a variety of energy cards at their disposal, they can power up its attacks to a mighty blow.
