Throughout the Pokémon series trainers have obtained key items that are so important to the journey they can't be lost, used, or thrown away once they've been acquired. These items can range from tools the trainer can use to help them in their adventures or quest specific items needed to trigger events with certain characters and environments.

Which of these key items reigns supreme when compared to the others? It's now time to look at the 10 best items in the Pokémon franchise and rank them from worst to first.

10 Fishing Rod

Fishing rods are great because they're not all great. Trainers can get their hands on rods of different qualities and these different rods give them opportunities to catch various water-dwelling pokémon based on rarity, size, and more.

Once surf is introduced it may seem like fishing rods are a useless redundancy, but numerous generations of games have gone out of their way to provide specific locations where only a rod can be used. If you snag a bite, make sure you're paying attention because those fish can get away in the blink of an eye if you're not careful.

9 TM Case

A TM case may seem like a weird choice, but take some time to sit back and think about its importance to trainers. The TM case holds all of the technical and hidden machine moves, often referred to as TMs and HMs, that the player acquires throughout their journey. Imagine if you didn't have an organized place to store all of these move-infused floppy disks?

It may not be flashy or seem like it's being used, but in reality, it's being used constantly, and given the way the game's work, you'll find yourself storing more and more in your TM case as time goes on.

8 Dowsing Machine

Pokémon has released a vast array of games in the mainline series, but even though they change regions and introduce plenty of new pokémon, there are more than a handful of constants. One of these constants are hidden items that exist in the world that GameFreak puts in as partial easter eggs curious trainers must find.

The dowsing machine was a key item introduced in order to help trainers find hidden items. It makes the user look like a bug as it's a headset that includes two large antennae-like pieces that dangle above in search of the hidden items.

7 Journal

Journals are often associated with girls and women for some reason despite the use of a journal being instrumental to humans of any sex or gender. In the world of Pokémon, they're used to relive past experiences and keep track of the progress you make as a trainer in a given region.

These days they tend not to be as forward-facing, but it'd be neat if it returned as a way to make the journey feel more special. You could see firsthand when and where your pokémon partners grew to love you and evolve into their best forms.

6 Pokéflute

Imagine having a magical instrument at your disposal that could wake slumbering giants. The moment players first ran into a Snorlax blocking their path of progression, it seemed like an impossible task to get it to wake up, let alone move out of the way.

Kids had a tough lesson to learn as many of them probably didn't realize the moment they woke Snorlax up with the pokéflute they'd engage in battle with it. Those were your only opportunities to capture the Totoro-inspired beast, otherwise, you'd never complete your PokéDex.

5 Oak's Parcel

Is Oak's Parcel a key item that only shows up in one game? Yes, that's entirely true. The fact of the matter is that this is the first quest that many Pokémon fans completed that led them down a lifelong relationship with a video game series they fell in love with.

Symbolically it represents where the series started and how one simple delivery turned into one of the entertainment world's biggest properties. Anyone who is considered a "Gen 1-er" remembers this simple delivery in black and white.

4 Map

This may seem like a no-brainer, but oftentimes people take in-game maps for granted. The ones in the Pokémon series are never highly detailed, but they do just enough to give players a proper sense of direction. They also become vital when you start the end-game journey of trying to catch every pokémon in hopes of completing the PokéDex and acquiring the shiny charm, which we'll talk about next.

Maps also provide the fast travel points you can use to quickly traverse the region and get from city to city, or from a weird mountain area, back to a place where you can heal.

3 Shiny Charm

As a kid, you hoped of one day collecting all of the pokémon and completing your PokéDex. Part of that was because it was an accomplishment drilled into your head by advertising, but the other was that you knew the reward would be the shiny charm.

This special item made it so your chances of running into a shiny form of a wild pokémon were drastically increased. Pairing this with some of the other shiny hunting methods made it a much more manageable prospect and was a smart carrot at the end of the pokémon collecting stick.

2 Exp. Share

Before the days of Exp. Share, players had to do the manual swap out method when they wanted to evolve pokémon who weren't really gifted with the ability to defeat opponents in battle. This made the evolutionary process for creatures like Metapod, Kakuna, or Magikarp such a pain in the rear end.

One can argue that universal Exp. Share in the current games is a little much, but no one will argue for the complete elimination of an item who makes it more approachable and easier to build a strong team and not just grind a single pokémon into the over-leveled territory.

1 Bicycle

When looking at the key items throughout the series, it's hard to find one player yearn for more than a bike at the beginning of their journey. Not only does it help trainers traverse the world around them at a faster pace, but it can also turn the breeding process into less of a chore. Combining a batch of eggs with a fire-type pokémon with a flame body and hopping on your bike can get those babies hatched in no time flat.

The moment you get your hands on the bike in a new Pokémon series entry, you feel like the game has finally put you in a place where you can really catch them all.
