So, here are 8 facts about Yveltal, some regarding its history and some about its powerful stats that can be quite helpful during a playthrough of the game.

8 Name Origin

Yveltal's name origin has not been confirmed. However, there are a few popular theories among the Pokemon community.

It is believed that Yveltal's name comes from the word yvel, since it is the Middle English spelling of the word 'evil.' It is a being of destruction and chaos, so it would make sense for its name to originate from a derivate of the word 'evil.'

Fans also think that the rest of its name comes from either 'quetzal', a type of bird, or 'talon,' the claw of a bird of prey, this would also make sense especially since Yveltal has 15 claws, 5 on each of its 2 wings, and another 5 on the tip of its tail.

7 Tied For Flying-type With Highest Base Stats

There are 4 Flying-type Pokemon tied with the highest base stats for a total of 680 points. These Pokemon are Yveltal, Rayquaza, Lugia, and Ho-Oh. This just goes to show how truly powerful Yveltal is.

It is a true force to be reckoned with. And, unless Rayquaze or Salamance mega evolve, there are no other Flying-type Pokemon to have higher base stats than these 4.

With the right team supporting it and the right moveset, Yveltal is definitely a good choice to bring along with you, be it on a Pokemon adventure or competitive play.

6 Pokemon Of Destruction

Yveltal is also known as the Pokemon of Destruction, that is the reason why he has a Dark Aura. Whereas, Xerneas, the Life Pokemon, has a Fairy Aura. The other Pokemon of the trio, Zygarde, is known as the Order Pokemon and he can reverse both their Auras with its ability, Aura Break.

As Xerneas's counterpart, Yveltal steals life energy from other living beings. Yveltal is incredibly powerful and menacing. The two balance each other with the help of Zygarde. The three are known as the Legendary Trio of Kalos.

5 Cocoon Form

After Yveltal's lifespan comes to an end, it steals the life out of the other beings around it. After this happens, it transforms itself into a cocoon. Once it becomes a cocoon it enters a dormant state.

The Pokemon will then slumber for several years before awakening with its full force and power. In the Pokemon anime, the only thing that was able to calm down Yveltal after its reawakening is Xerneas and its Fairy Aura. Xerneas turned a destructive Yveltal into a calm beast that flies away peacefully.

4 A Result Of Artist's Block

Ken Sugimori, one of the most notorious Pokemon designers, had to deal with artist's-block while designing certain Pokemon for Pokemon X and Y. He actually had to hand over the task to designer Yusuke Ohmura so he could lend a helping hand.

So, Ohmura worked on these Pokemon and then handed them over once again so Sugimori could put the finishing touches on them. In consequence, these are now the two Pokemon that stand out the most when Sugimori looks back on the project.

3 Same Stat Distribution As Xerneas

Yveltal and Xerneas have exactly the same stat distribution. Of course, players can train them however they wish to train them according to the team they'll play on their teams and their movesets. But, still, before training, their stats correspond exactly.

It makes sense for them to have these resemblances as they are Generation VI's game mascots. Plus, they are also part of the Aura Trio along with Zygarde. However, Zygarde's stats aren't the same as the other two Pokemon, it can be weaker or it can even become much more powerful, depending on his forme.

2 No Alternative Form

aura trio variations, xerneas and zygarde

Yveltal is the only Pokemon from the Aura Trio to not have an alternative form. Zygarde has 3 different forms, 10% Forme, 50% Forme, and Complete Forme. Xerneas has 2 forms, Active Mode and Neutral Mode. In the games, Xerneas will appear in Active mode whenever it is in battle or while in contests but will be in Neutral Mode out of battle.

It is strange because unlike the other 2 Aura Trio Pokemon, Yveltal does not have any alternative forms apart from its Shiny variant.

1 Dark-type With Highest Base HP

Pokemon: Yveltal using its signature move, Oblivion Wing

Yveltal is the Dark-type Pokemon with the highest base HP at 126 points. This is actually great since its signature move is Oblivion Wing, it is the only Pokemon capable of learning this move.

Oblivion Wing is a Flying-type move that restores the Pokemon's HP by 75% of the damage dealt. This is pretty powerful taking into consideration the fact that Yveltal can keep healing, making it hard to diminish its impressive health capacity. It can be even more threatening if Yveltal is holding the Big Root item.
