Even when they get to a city, they often find that the gym doesn't offer much of a break from being on the road. In fact, there are several gyms throughout the series that fans have found completely frustrating. Whether it be because of the gym leader or the gym challenges, below are the ten worst gyms in the series.

10 Nacrene City

Nacrene City is located in Unova and is considered one of the hardest and most tedious gyms in the area in spite of featuring Normal-type Pokémon. In order to beat the gym, you must climb up ladders and inspect the bookshelves. This, of course, while you are still having to maneuver your way through trainers.

The gym leader located at the end, Lenora, can also be an irritating opponent.

9 Veilstone City

Veilstone City is located in the Sinnoh region and is the Fighting-type gym. This gym has a puzzle that you must solve in order to reach the gym leader, that for many young trainers was just annoying. All around the gym are punching bags that you must move out of your way to reveal a path.

You need to work your way through the room and clear the path without getting stuck. Maylene's Pokémon are tough to beat as well.

8 Goldenrod City

There are no crazy tricks to getting the gym leader Whitney; once your there, however, you are likely to find yourself frustrated. Whitney has Miltank on her team, which has become a notorious Pokémon that in regularly joked about in the various fan groups.

Miltank's move rollout is one of the most feared in the entire series.

7 Petalburg City

This is Norman's gym, which happens to be your father in the game. Norman's gym is pretty tedious as you have to make your way through several doors to fight him. Each room will have a title, and there is even a door from one-hit K.O. movesets.

You are forced to pick what type of annoyance you want to battle against.

6 Mossdeep City

Mossdeep is another gym in Hoenn, but unlike Petalburg, you won't get to enter it until near the end of the story. Not only are the pair of gym leaders hard, but you have to deal with movement tiles that will shove you all around the gym until you figure out which switch to press.

Some players will even end up spinning around in circles for quite some time.

5 Sootpolis City

The final gym in Hoenn also offers a rather annoying challenge. To get to the gym leader, players must run along ice tiles. Each ice tile you step on cracks, and if you touch it again, you will fall through. To make matters worse, all tiles must be cracked in order to open the path.

If you need to leave the gym, the tiles will also reset, forcing you to do the puzzle all over again.

4 Snowbelle City

This is another gym with a tough leader and a puzzle aspect. The gym, which is located in Kalos, has the player use rotating platforms to make their way across the gym. Like other puzzles, though, figuring out which switches to push can create a lot of back and forth movement.

Once you finally get through the puzzle, you also have to deal with several strong Ice-types.

3 Fusia City

Fusia City is located in the Kanto region, and through many players into a frenzy when they first encountered it. Since the gym is ninja-themed, players have to wander their way through it while continually running into invisible walls that make the annoying thud sound effect.

To top it all off, the gym is Poison-type, which promises that you will need to run back to the center for healing.

2 Opelucid City

This gym is located in Unova and had Dragon-type trainers. To get to the gym leader, trainers must wander along narrow paths and the switches that will help them get to the leader. Like other maze type gyms, this gets annoying fast and can feel quite tedious.

As your reward for escaping the gym, you are forced to take on several Dragon-types, which can be a struggle for many players.

1 Saffron city

The first gym that players ever really had trouble with was in Kanato. Saffron City houses the Psychic-type gym. When you enter Sabrina's gym, you are greeted by teleportation platforms. When you step on them, you are teleported to another part of the gym. You have to find the correct pattern to make it to the leader.

If you accidentally step on the long tile, you need to start all the way over again, and leaving the gym for healing is also a pain.
