Blissey, another healing-type Supporter Pokemon, was added to Pokemon Unite on August 18, 2021 and has since then appeared in almost every Ranked game we’ve played. This newcomer Pokemon is a fantastic healer, great support, and a deceptively interesting character to play.

But, they do take a bit of getting used to, especially for people new to the MOBA format, so we’ve made a complete guide that goes over what exactly this Pokemon is, what they’re meant to do, what you can do with them, and how they work exactly.

What Type Of Pokemon Is Blissey? What's Their Role In Unite?

Pokemon Unite -Blissey Newcomer Titlecard

Blissey is well-known as the evolution to Chansey that was added in Generation Two. This oval-shaped puffball is known as the “Happiness Pokemon” whose sole focus in life is to make people (and Pokemon) feel better.

In Pokemon Unite, they do just that as both Chansey and Blissey (though no Happiny) by removing the status effects of their allies, healing their team, and disrupting the enemy team. Now, in the competitive Pokemon scene, both Blissey and Chansey are known for their absurd amount of Max HP, and that's true for Unite as well with Blissey having an “Endurance” rating of seven, putting them just below all the Defenders who range from eight to ten as well as Mr. Mime who also sits at an eight.

On a team, Blissey primarily is used for:

  • Support
  • Healing
  • Disrupting Enemies
  • Shielding Allies
  • And Throwing Opponents

As Blissey, you’re meant to watch over your lane partner, keep them healed up and free of status effects while also using your Boosted Attacks to slowly chip away at the enemies. Sounds like a lot to juggle right? Turns out Unite isn't quite the "baby League of Legends" people assumed it would be.

When Should I Be Picking Blissey?

There are numerous situations where picking Blissey is a decent choice, such as when:

That said, there are situations where picking Blissey is a bad call, so just make sure not to insta-lock them without looking at what the rest of your team picked. People that do this are the exact reason the community is demanding bans be implemented in the first place.

Now that we know:

  • What Blissey is as a Pokemon.
  • What their role in Unite is.
  • And when you should probably pick them.

Let’s go over their actual kit, how it works, and what to pick for their two upgraded Moves.

Passive: Natural Cure

Natural Cure is literally just a passive debuff cancel. When you’re inflicted with any status effect as Blissey, such as

  • Sleep
  • Frozen
  • Burned
  • Slowed
  • Or Stunned

Natural Cure immediately gets rid of it before going on a short cooldown. It's not something you'll notice every time it triggers, but it really helps Blissey stay active in supporting their team.

Boosted Attack

As far as their Basic Attacks go, Blissey’s are very short-ranged, almost detrimentally so. They’re a melee character through and through. Blissey’s Boosted Basic Attack isn’t the third attack in a sequence or anything like that, it’s time-based. It also doesn't apply any CC either, which is odd for a Supporter.

Every few seconds, Blissey gets a Boosted Basic Attack that deals a big chunk of damage, and that's literally it.

Starting Moves: Pound & Heal Pulse

Blissey’s starting Moves are Pound and Heal Pulse, essentially one for damage and one for support.

  • Pound: Pound is a great burst of damage in the first two minutes of the game, as well as a decent slow. Because this has a six-second cool-down, you might want to open with a Boosted Basic Attack, then use Pound once the enemy starts to run instead of using it right away.
  • Healing Pulse: Heal Pulse is a continuous heal, not an instant one, so keep that in mind, but it does heal quite a bit for the first minute or so of the game.

But, the unique thing about Blissey's Starting Moves is they get their second one at level three instead of at level four, which makes a big difference in how you'll approach the initial laning process.

Heal Pulse Upgrade Options: Soft-Boiled & Safeguard

Like all other Pokemon in Unite, Blissey has two upgrade options to pick from for both her Primary and Secondary abilities. And, she unlocks this option to replace Heal Pulse right at level four.

  • Soft-Boiled: The obvious standout choice since it’s a bigger, more immediate heal compared to Heal Pulse. Also, this Move, like Mr. Mime's Barrier, can store multiple charges (three for the un-upgraded version).
  • Safeguard: This removes all status effects from your teammate and makes them immune to Hindrances for a short time. This is by far the better choice against opponents who have a lot of CC, like Alolan Ninetails, Slowbro, or Snorlax.

Newer Blissey players tend to default to Soft-Boiled, but the versatility and aggressive nature of Safeguard shouldn't be undervalued either.

Pound Upgrade Options: Egg Bomb & Helping Hand

For their second Move upgrade, learned at level six, Blissey has the choice between either Egg Bomb or Helping Hand:

  • Egg Bomb: This is Blissey’s only real “ranged attack”. Blissey throws an egg at a location, it explodes, and the enemies are knocked away from the explosion. Can be used to push enemies away from allies or back into the fight.
  • Helping Hand: Meanwhile, this other option is meant for a Blissey build that further buffs up already strong allies. While active, Blissey and all nearby allies ' movement speed and attack speed are greatly increased, and all of their Basic Attacks become Boosted Attacks.

Both choices are meant for offense, so it really depends on who your lane partner is and what you think the team needs more.

Additional Effects Of Upgraded Moves

Now, at levels ten and 12, Blissey gets to modify both their upgraded Moves even further with effects like:

  • Egg Bomb (LVL10): “Thrown” enemies also have their movement speed briefly decreased.
  • Helping Hand (LVL10): Also increases the overall damage of basic attacks too.
  • Soft-Boiled (LVL12): Increases stockpile cap from three to four.
  • Safeguard (LVL12): Adds a shield to the ally Safeguarded.

Unite Move: Bliss Assistance

Finally, Blissey’s Unite Move, called Bliss Assistance, is an odd one. You literally can’t use this without teammates around, and it has a lot of functions when used successfully such as shielding an ally, buffing their Attack/Special Attack, and throwing/damaging any enemies hit by their dash.

It’s a game-changer Unite Move, especially if Blissey aims it well and is positioned on the opposite side of the team fight to the ally they use it on.

Move Choice, Battle Item, & Held Item Recommendations

Move Recommendations

Blissey is actually a pretty versatile character, so you should, quite frankly, just adjust to the team you’re up against.

  • Is it a team with a lot of CC? Go Safeguard. Otherwise, use Soft-Boiled.
  • Does your team lack hard CC and raw damage? Go Egg Bomb.
  • Are you laning or playing with a character that relies heavily on Basic Attacks like Venusaur, Cinderace, or Machamp? Try Helping Hand.

While some other characters in Unite sort of have the “end-all-be-all” move options, Blissey really varies from game to game.

Held Item Recommendations

As far as Held Item builds for Blissey go, it’s about what you’d expect with the main trio of Held Items used by Master Rank players being:

  • Buddy Barrier: +600 Max HP at Rank 20 is absurd, which is why this item is so commonly used.
  • EXP Share: Finally, another character other than Eldegoss uses this. Just lets Blissey focus on supporting.
  • Focus Band: Blissey has high Max HP, but low Defense/Special Defense, so this item helps with that a bit.

But you can mix and match a fair amount of different Held Items as well for different results such as:

  • Rocky Helmet: Great tanky option that punishes enemies for hitting you.
  • Score Shield: The primary effect gives Blissey a huge shield while scoring thanks to their innately high Max HP. Great for games where you're "really struggling".
  • Leftovers: Mostly used for the passive Max HP and HP Recovery Buffs.
  • Aeos Cookie: Turns Blissey into potentially an even more absurd health sponge.

Battle Item Recommendation(s?)

Now, in regards to Battle Items, we’re of course recommended Eject Button. If you’re really against using this, Blissey can also use Slow Smoke pretty well, but that's about the only smart alternative.
