Pokemon has had a total of eight generations in the past, with more to come in the future. The franchise is a very popular one with a lot of unique mechanics that make it stand out from other creature-capture video games.

However, every generation of Pokémon so far has had at least one major problem that fans were very annoyed at while experiencing it. The frustrating mechanics and different themes of certain games over the years have driven players to madness as they attempt to enjoy their favorite Pokémon games. There are definitely a lot of good things about the Pokémon franchise, but unfortunately, every generation has a few things that weren't top-notch and quickly ended up becoming annoying.

8 Gen VI - The Games Were Way Too Easy

Generation 6 added many new mechanics into the Pokémon franchise that made the games much easier to complete, especially for beginners. Mechanics such as the new Exp. Share and easier gym battles made battling much more boring and less strategic.

Most fans were upset that these beginner-friendly mechanics were present in generation 6 and that there was no form of difficulty slider. Although these problems have been solved to some extent in the past two generations, fans can still see the effects that generation 6 has had on the franchise to this day.

7 Gen I - The Pokémon Designs Were Very Basic

The Pokémon designs in generation 1 were extremely basic, and that was most likely because it was the first batch of Pokémon they created. A lot of the Pokémonwere either based heavily on real-world animals or were extremely weirdly designed, such as Voltorb, which is based on a Pokéball.

Fans get very nostalgic when seeing their favorite Kanto Pokémon, so they're not all bad; however, it was quite annoying to run into so many boring creatures in generation 1 and their remakes. Unfortunately, creatures such as Caterpie and Ratatta get stale fast!

6 Gen VII - The Rotom Dex

The Rotom Dex was a special kind of Pokédex introduced in generation 7. This Pokédex allowed players to have more communication with their Pokémon encyclopedia, and it gave many tips to help new players on their journey.

However, a lot of these tips were more annoying than they were helpful, and players got sick of them quickly, especially when they popped up during battles incessantly. Hopefully, mechanics such as this one will not be featured in future generations of Pokémon because it was annoying to experience.

5 Gen II - Grinding Is Mandatory

As previously mentioned, it's not necessarily a bad thing to have difficulty; however, generation 2 took it to the next level and instead added a lot of required grinding to be able to beat the next gym battle or the elite four.

All of the grinding required in generation 2 took its toll on players, and many fans didn't enjoy it one bit. When players go back to replay the original generation 2 games, they can see the difference in grinding versus modern games in the franchise, where leveling up Pokémon is much easier.

4 Gen VIII - The Lack Of A National Pokédex

The national Dex was, unfortunately, lacking in generation 8, and fans were very angry when they learned that it would not appear in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

It is very annoying for fans to not be able to catch their favorite creatures from other generations. Not being able to transfer over Pokémon from their previous games was a slap in the face to many fans that had farmed for shiny Pokémon and other rare creatures. The lack of the National Pokédex in generation 8 was one of the worst things that Gamefreak ever did to the franchise, and it annoys fans to no end.

3 Gen III - There Were Way Too Many Ocean Routes

Generation 3 was notorious for having a lot of water, and fans had to constantly surf on a Pokémon's back to get to the next location. This wouldn't have been such a bad of a thing if the Pokémon were more diversified on the water routes; however, it was mostly the same few creatures over and over again.

Hoenn is, without a doubt, one of the best regions in the franchise, but the amount of water that is in the game can be one of its most annoying traits. Luckily the rest of the Hoenn region's layout saves it and makes this generation an amazing one.

2 Gen V - The Characters Lack of Personality

Generation 5 had a plethora of different characters for players to meet; however, most of them were lacking in the personality department. This is especially true for the player's rivals and the Team Plasma members, because although they were good in conception, the end result of their personalities was very dull.

This issue could be fixed in a remake of the generation 5 games, and perhaps Gamefreak will take these criticisms into consideration in the future. Meeting a bunch of characters that aren't very well developed can be one of the most annoying things that occur in a video game.

1 Gen IV - The Gameplay Was Very Slow Paced

Generation 4 has notoriously slow gameplay, both while traversing the terrain of the Sinnoh region and during the turn-based battles. The battles run much slower than in previous and future generations, which makes for a very frustrating and boring experience.

This issue was fixed to an extent in Pokémon Platinum, and players that enjoy Diamond and Pearl will have to endure this problem forever. Hopefully, the remakes of Diamond and Pearl won't have this issue because it was one of the worst things about generation 4.
