When it comes to a game like Prey, one thing is for sure: It is a heckin' challenge. There are difficult games, and then there's Prey, which swooped in like a bad dream to haunt experienced and battle-hardened gamers everywhere.

From the outside, the game looked innocent enough: A survival shooter with a supernatural sci-fi element thrown in. Easy enough to figure out, right? Wrong. This game is the epitome of rage-quitting.

However, there are some things that can help if anyone wanted to revisit the game and possibly make it past the halfway mark. Some may have even found it easy to beat, in which case, congrats on the impossible. We can help with one thing, and that's knowing which weapons are worthy of being within reach.

10 Wrench

gaming.stackexchange.com

Well... what can be said about a wrench? This weapon deserves the last spot as it's the weapon that the player will start out with. While it is a melee and does cause some damage, the chances of it actually being worthy of an enemy kill is consequential at best. Morgan's stamina bar will also decrease while using this weapon, in which case the battle system is very realistic as he'll often be too fatigued to strike quickly. It's an option if the player is planning on running an enemy and fleeing, but is best used in combination with the GLOO Canon. Otherwise? It should probably remain in the toolbox for the next time a sink leaks.

9 Nullwave Transmitter

This weapon can backfire if not used carefully which rightfully earned it a spot at the bottom of the list. Keep in mind, this weapon can't be used for a final blow or to take down an enemy. At most, it will stun an enemy so that the player can effectively find a strategic way to destroy it. Additionally, it can prevent a Weaver from using the Backlash ability but doesn't do much outside of that. It's a middle ground weapon, basically something the player can use to buy time and via suppressing the psionic ability of an enemy.

8 The Neuroelectric Disrupter

This weapon definitely earned its place at the bottom of the list simply because of its finicky nature. Not only is it a challenge to use, but this is yet another weapon that takes tremendous skill to figure out. Most of the time, it might not even be worth it to pull out unless the player is desperate. The Disrupter is essentially a stun gun but the problem is that it won't stun all enemies. This isn't the biggest problem, however; the weapon must be charged before using and even if it is possible to stun an enemy, the player must sacrifice valuable time awaiting its next charge.

7 EMP Charge

polygon.com

An EMP Charge is great for staggering an enemy and not much else. This weapon is essentially a non-lethal grenade, useful for halting tough enemies while the player gets their bearings or takes a shot with a stronger weapon. It stuns the enemy temporarily by shooting out an energy field but will only last for several seconds before time runs out. This is also a weapon that is tailored to certain enemies and is really only helpful in fighting Corrupted Operators, Technopaths, and Turrets.

We're not saying these are useless but don't count on them too much.

6 Huntress Boltcaster

holdtoreset.com

Hilariously enough, a crossbow in any other game would do some type of respectable damage, even if it's only enough to stagger an enemy. In Prey, however, this crossbow is somewhat of a joke when it comes to certain enemies. The impact of this crossbow alone will not deal damage to most enemies but can be used to perform survival-skill tasks. That alone is the only reason it's ranked slightly higher on this list, although its usage can be a bit misleading. The only enemy it will deal damage on is a Cystoid, and it will also rupture their nests.

5 Silenced Pistol

This weapon, like many in the game, is misleading. Unlike the shotgun which can actually deal damage, the Silenced Pistol, otherwise known as the PPN-8 Personal Defense Sidearm, should really only be used when performing a sneak attack... hence its silencer. It won't deal damage that's anything close to the shotgun and isn't nearly as effective as some of the other energy-based weapons, but it's a great second option or last resort if you're strapped. While this weapon doesn't promise major payoff, it's not the worst thing to have around in the event of a sneak-worthy opponent.

4 Q-Beam

youtube.com

The Quasiparticle Beam Emitter, or Q-Beam for short, is a futuristic weapon. Its value is in its ability to cause an enemy to explode due to the significant amount of energy that's released once the trigger is pulled. The reason this weapon is neither ranked high nor low is that its attacks need to be stacked. An attack with this weapon won't have the effect of an instakill but rather will kill an enemy eventually. By filling up an enemy's green meter effectively with this weapon, the enemy will succumb. It's a means to an end rather than, well, just an end.

3 Shotgun

allgamers.com

Just as in any game, a shotgun is worthy to have on your side, especially when it comes to shooters. In a game like Prey, the more options the player has for weapons, the better -- some enemies are simply immune to certain weapons and attacks. In the event that someone is serious about this game, it's worth it to go ahead and find the Cosmonaut DLC pack so they can get their hands on the Margrave shotgun. This is a powerful weapon that's useful in combat against tough enemies that don't plan on going down easily.

2 Recycler Charge

reddit.com

The Recycler Charge is an interesting weapon simply because it's so versatile and has a unique purpose. When used, it will turn anything within the field barrier into a craftable material, including enemies. The reason this comes in at number two is that it can be used in conjunction with the GLOO Canon, creating a fairly lethal force. Additionally, using this weapon is like getting a two-in-one deal; not only is the player able to potentially rid their path of an enemy, but they might gain a valuable resource from the blast as well.

1 GLOO Cannon

prey.fandom.com

The GLOO Cannon is by far one of the most used weapons in the game which is why it has earned the top spot. The thing about Prey is that unlike a traditional shooter, each move must be carefully thought out depending on the enemy the player is facing. With that being said, the GLOO Cannon is incredibly versatile, allowing the player to shoot out a glue-like substance that will keep an enemy in place. It can also be used as a survival tool if necessary, giving it several uses aside from just a battle weapon.
