UPDATE: Ubisoft has made the Prince of Persia remake delay official with their latest tweet, shown below. Original article follows.
At Ubisoft Forward, the French publisher introduced us to the first trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. And honestly, it was a little disappointing. The game had gone from PS2-era graphics to what looked like PS3-era graphics, even though Ubisoft planned to release Sands of Time for the PlayStation 4 (as well as Xbox One and PC).
Perhaps Ubisoft took that criticism to heart because now it looks like they’re going to delay Prince of Persia past its previously planned January release date.
A now-deleted post on Ubisoft’s Czech Facebook (helpfully transcribed by Eurogamer) page breaks the bad news. "2020 was a year like no other," the post began completely unnecessarily. "Today we would like to inform you that we need more time to complete the game.
"With that, the release date of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been moved to March 18, 2021. We believe this is the right decision to ensure we deliver a game you like. Thank you for your patience and continued support of the Prince of Persia, and we hope you remain safe and healthy during this holiday season."
The post has since been removed, so we’re guessing that the Ubisoft Czech Republic office jumped the gun and the news hasn’t been made official yet, but it’s likely just a matter of time before we see a larger announcement.
As revealed during September's Ubisoft Forward, Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake will have new motion capture for the Prince and crew, as well as new voice lines from the original Prince voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal. The game will be redone in the Anvil engine, which is typically used to create Assassin's Creed games and apparently contributed to the unimpressive visuals.
Hopefully, Ubisoft will use the extra time to give that engines a few tweaks to make our Prince as beautiful as we remember.
