Princess Of Edenia: 20 Interesting Facts You Didn't Know About Kitana From Mortal Kombat

Whenever you think of Mortal Kombat characters, you usually think of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden. The franchise created by Midway Studios, now named Netherrealm Studios, is no short of having iconic female characters. There is Sonya Blade, Jade, and the one who is getting the spotlight: Kitana.

The princess of Edenia made her first appearance in Mortal Kombat II and became an instant fan favorite. Her design in her debut game resembles that of a ninja, and yet she was very beautiful. Over the years, her appearance has changed significantly and still remained gorgeous. Her weapons look like they are simple fans, but their blades are dangerous and make them look cool.

Throughout the years, Kitana has become one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise. She might seem dangerous at a first glance, but once you get to know her, she is actually very kind and loyal. Even though she is not a protagonist, she had a lot of screen time in the recent games like Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat X.

Kitana has appeared in other media like the movies, animated TV show, and live-action series. Each portrayal of her captures Kitana’s character and make her likable and interesting. Cosplay and fan art of her is also common in the fandom, even if some of the recent costumes are very difficult to make. Is there something you do not know about the Edenian?

20 Living A Lie

via: vaxzone.deviantart.com

Kitana in the Mortal Kombat games tends to be on the evil side because of her father Shao Kahn, but in actuality, she is self-conflicting because all she wanted to do was impress her father. As we play through her arcade ladder and pay attention to her story, we eventually find out that Shao Kahn is not her biological father.

Because of that, her life was pretty much a lie.

That makes Kitana a very tragic character since she was young when Shao Kahn took her actual father’s life, made her mother Sindel his queen, and then she offed her life. Once Liu Kang came into her life, she changed for the better and fights with Earthrealm in order to save her home that is Edenia.

19 Part Of An Unusual Outfitter Shop

via: mortalkombat.wikia.com

The Mortal Kombat series might be one of the most intense video games to ever grace the consoles, but it does have its fair share of humor. Obtaining unlockables that do not appear in the campaign can be received in the Krypt. There, concept arts, videos, characters, and more can be unlocked. In the game Deadly Alliance, there are “joke” items that can be seen in the Extras menu.

Kitana appears in a golfing advertisement.

Apparently, Edenians took up golfing from Earthrealm, and they opened up a successful golf outfitter shop. Kitana, along with Goro became spokespersons for the store and it served them very well. It certainly does not beat Cooking with Scorpion, but the picture is endearing and pretty funny to look at.

18 Don’t Mess With Her

via: nemu013.deviantart.com

Kitana might seem beautiful and ladylike at a first glance, but the number one rule of getting involved with the princess is being careful. Due to her years under Shao Kahn’s rule, she has trained to become the perfect warrior. Along with her friend Jade, the two were unstoppable in doing their jobs. It is sort of unsettling to think of Kitana as an assassin, due to her character development later on in the franchise, but if she is one Earthrealm’s side, then it would be a great asset.

In addition to her being an assassin, her variant in Mortal Kombat X features her as one, which focuses on dealing more damage and being more aggressive. As mentioned earlier, do not mess with this princess.

17 Created A Peace Treaty

via: YouTube.com (Super)

The first timeline in the Mortal Kombat franchise has a lot of history explored upon when it comes to the characters and their backstories. However, since the second timeline is a complete reboot, everything that has happened in the first one will not be repeated. Mortal Kombat 4 took a different approach after Shao Kahn was defeated for good for the time being.

After the former Elder God Shinnok’s threat, Kitana managed to form a peace treaty with the Shokans and Centaurians. These two species were known to be enemies, and for Kitana to make them form an alliance was something completely unexpected but amazing. It takes a brave and strong woman like Kitana in order to do something like that, and how she handled it was incredible.

16 Costume Change

via: YouTube.com (Артём Астахов)

Kitana is one of the most popular female characters in Mortal Kombat and her play style is very fun and unique. In the games she appeared in, she has been a regular in all of the main series games except for Mortal Kombat 3 (before Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 came out) and Mortal Kombat: Deception. In the former and latter, she still made cameos when it comes to character endings.

She appeared in Ermac’s Deception ending and reunited with Liu Kang.

However, that is not the only peculiar part in the ending. For some strange reason, she is wearing Mileena’s clothes but with her usual color blue. Then again, Kitana is not a playable character in the game, so the developers had to throw in a palette swap of Mileena but with Kitana’s face. At least she still appeared in the game!

15 In Honor Of Her Dearest Friend

via: xxanemonaxx.deviantart.com, wishidraws.deviantart.com

Mortal Kombat X is a great successor to the absolutely perfect Mortal Kombat 9. Although, the sequel is perhaps one of the most depressing ones in the franchise due to the number of characters sacrificed in the battle to save Earthrealm. Even though Kitana canonically at the moment is a revenant, her normal self is still playable.

Jade is missing on the roster, unfortunately.

Her best friend did not appear in the game whatsoever even though she appeared as a revenant in Mortal Kombat 9. It is possible that Jade’s spirit was able to break free from her revenant self, but that is according to Kitana’s Mortal Kombat X ending, which is more than likely noncanon. However, if you play in Kitana’s Mournful variation, she has Jade’s staff and razorang. Even though it is not the same, it is kind of Kitana to fight with her best friend’s weapons.

14 Edenia’s Version Of Charlie’s Angels

via: YouTube.com (arcadegamesfreak)

Arcade endings in Mortal Kombat bring interesting closures in their respective games. Some of them are thrilling or even tragic. Kitana’s ending in Mortal Kombat 9 is what we will be talking about. After she defeated Shao Kahn, Kitana learned the reason why Mileena was created, and that would be to take her place in ruling. However, Kitana spared her life and offered her a role in aristocracy.

Together, with Jade, they formed a fighting force.

In a way, they are like Charlie’s Angels, but in Outworld instead of Earthrealm. It is a known joke around the community with the way the three posed at the end of the cutscene, but it is still pretty cool seeing these three fight together. They just look really good together too.

13 Unplayable In One Game

via: jutsukinoofficial.deviantart.com

Technically, Kitana is unplayable in two games, but after Mortal Kombat 3, there was an update to the game titled Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and every character you can imagine were playable in it. Even if she was unplayable, she still appeared in the video games for the sake of pleasing fans and for filling in the story. There is another game where she is unplayable.

In Mortal Kombat: Deception, she is not in the character roster, but still appears in it. Strangely enough, she appeared in the PSP port of the game, titled Mortal Kombat: Unchained. Sometimes we cannot help but feel sad whenever our favorite characters are unplayable, but if they still appear in the game, then it is better than them not being in the game after all.

12 Original Name

via: kittrix.deviantart.com

The name Kitana sounds like something Japanese related. In a way, you would be correct. Kitana is actually a combination of the words kitsune, meaning “fox” and katana. It made a lot of people believe that she was Japanese, but that is not the case since she is Edenian. Her original name would not have been different in that regard.

She was going to be named Kitsune.

However, during the development of Mortal Kombat II, her name was changed to Kitana. Looking back on it, her current name is better suited for her since she does not have any traits that make her fox related. Her name also is similar to the Persian name Katana, which means honorable, and not to be confused with the Japanese sword.

11 Japanese Inspiration

via: sunkeytail.deviantart.com

Like with the previous entry, Kitana’s name sounds familiar to the Japanese language. For the most part, the Edenian princess is inspired by Japanese culture in some ways! Other than her name, her attire in Mortal Kombat II does resemble that of a ninja. Later on, in Mortal Kombat X, her default costume was definitely heavily inspired by Japanese warriors.

She even has a DLC outfit that is titled Jingu Kitana. It is more than likely based on Empress Jingu, a Japanese Empress and onna bugeisha, which is a female warrior who commonly fought alongside samurai. It fits her very well since she fights alongside her comrades and is practically powerful in combat. By the time the new Mortal Kombat game comes out, hopefully, Kitana will still retain her Japanese themed costumes.

10 Are They Really Sisters?

via: khaluow.deviantart.com

One of the biggest rivalries other than the iconic Sub-Zero and Scorpion is without a doubt Kitana and Mileena. These two were made to be enemies and fight on the opposite side. Ever since Kitana found out that Mileena was created with her own blood, the thought greatly shocked Kitana. When it comes to Mileena’s place in being related to Kitana, are they technically sisters?

It depends from a certain point of view. Parentage wise, no they do not have relations to each other. Biologically, it is arguable. Mileena was created from Kitana’s and Tarkatan blood and is Shao Kahn’s “daughter.” But what is true is that Mileena is just a clone of Kitana created with the help of Shang Tsung. Kitana even calls Mileena her sister, so it is sort of true?

9 Equivalent To Another Character

via:nightsgirl666.deviantart.com

Remember Kitana and Mileena being sworn, enemies? That sounds familiar to another pair and it is the obvious Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Sure, the two ladies are not the iconic rivalry, but they are still memorable. If you think about it, Kitana is pretty much the female version of Sub-Zero while Mileena is the female version of Scorpion. It is a simple way of saying it, but the similarities are uncanny and rather interesting.

Probably for that reason, Kitana would be paired up with Sub-Zero romantically, but everyone knows that her heart belongs to Liu Kang. Still, Kitana and Sub-Zero fight on the good side and do what they think is right. They are highly trained assassins as well, so being the equivalent to one another fits them well.

8 Under A Lot Of Evil Influence

(LOSTyGIRL)[/caption]

Throughout the history of Mortal Kombat, Kitana has been under the influence of evil and submitted to do things she would feel guilty of doing. Before being in under anyone’s control, she believed to be Shao Kahn’s daughter until he told her the truth about her biological father and that his true daughter is Mileena.

In Mortal Kombat: Deception, she was under Onaga’s control and in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, she was manipulated by rage from Dark Kahn and Quan Chi. In the recent Mortal Kombat games, she is under Quan Chi’s control again due to a deal the latter made with Raiden. As of now, she is a revenant and currently resides in the Netherrealm. It would be a miracle for Kitana to turn back to normal in her current state.

7 Awesome Tribute

via: uproxx.com, zetaboards.com

When it comes to Mortal Kombat characters, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, or Raiden would make appearances in pop culture. The three even appeared in the Injustice games made by Netherrealm Studios. However, Kitana has one appearance that was shocking, but surprisingly cool. WWE’s AJ Lee, now retired, dressed up as Kitana in a Halloween battle royale. Seeing a famous person done the costume and look cool while fighting is not only amazing but pays off as an astounding tribute.

People who are fans of Mortal Kombat were probably surprised that they spotted a Kitana cosplay in wrestling, and they have every right to be. Even though AJ Lee is not exactly perfect appearance wise as Kitana, she looked fantastic in the costume. Kitana herself would be proud.

6 Most Memorable Finishing Move

via: YouTube.com (The Krypt)

Fatalities are one of the memorable features in Mortal Kombat. Due to its violence, it created the ESRB rating system. However, we cannot help but enjoy the creativity in the fatalities. Kitana’s are just as interesting and cool. The one she is most famous for would be the Kiss of Death. Judging by the name, it would be very scary of her to kiss someone she loves (maybe Liu Kang?) and he would end up suffering the consequences.

Would you still want Kitana to kiss you?

If she kisses her opponent, their body begins swelling up until it could not handle it anymore. The result after that is a big mess. Watch a video of it and you will see how messed up it looks.

5 Iconic Portrayal

via: mortalkombat.wikia.com, mortalkombatwarehouse.com

Even though Kitana did not appear in the first Mortal Kombat game, she did appear in the first Mortal Kombat movie. Just like in the games, she is Shao Kahn’s adopted daughter and is loyal to him. However, she came from Outworld instead of Edenia. Despite how cheesy and outdated the film is, there was one thing that made Kitana one of the better characters in the movies.

That would be the actress Talisa Soto.

She looked the part of the princess and was also very beautiful in-character and in other films. Talisa actually did the motion capture for Kitana in Mortal Kombat 4 and she might have looked a bit off, it was still very cool of Ed Boon allowing her to play as the princess again.

4 She Sounds Familiar…

via: artstation.com/brizeydapanther92, sonic.wikia.com

Over the years in the Mortal Kombat series, Kitana has a lineup of voice actresses. By the time they voice acted as Kitana, they captured the personality of the warrior princess greatly, even if some of them can be cheesy due to being outdated. However, this entry will focus on the one who is the current voice actress, and that would be Karen Strassman.

Karen has done many voices other than the Edenian princess. She has voiced characters in anime like Kallen from Code Geass, Soi Fon from Bleach, and in video games, she voiced Olivia and Anna from Fire Emblem: Awakening, Poison from the Street Fighter series, and of course, Mileena. Karen does an amazing job portraying Kitana as a fierce and awesome fighter, but an unsure and conflicted lost princess.

3 Beauty Over Age

via: andreikolosov.deviantart.com

Kitana is without a doubt one of the most beautiful characters in the Mortal Kombat series. Her black hair and brown eyes along with her toned body are attractive. It is amazing that her combatants’ wills are strong to not be distracted by her beauty. Due to coming from Edenia, her people are good looking and seemed young beyond their years. Kitana herself is young but not as young as you think.

Kitana is over 10,000 years old.

She does not even look a day over twenty-five! That amount of years lived is an amazing feat to know about. Not to mention, she trained to be a warrior for so long that she would top everyone who lived in Earthrealm. Also, she is clearly wise beyond her years too.

2 Tragic Love Story

via: demonleon3d.deviantart.com

One of the best aspects of Kitana’s character is her relationship with Liu Kang. She was originally sent to eliminate him, but after he defeated her in a fight, he spared her life. That made her confused but relieved. After he won against Shang Tsung, she was seen smiling from afar before returning to her world. Each timeline, however, is not kind to their love for each other.

In the first timeline, Shang Tsung defeated Liu Kang, which cost his life. Later on, he would become a zombie and then a spirit. Despite that, they still relied on each other and care for one another. The second timeline is crueler. Kitana loses her life from her injuries and Sindel’s corrupted state attacking her repeatedly. After a fight with Raiden, Liu Kang ends up losing his life. Together, they have become revenants under Quan Chi’s control.

1 Under Different Circumstances

via: mortalkombat.wikia.com

Kitana and Liu Kang both became souls trapped in Quan Chi’s grasp in Mortal Kombat X. In the last cutscene in Mortal Kombat X’s story mode, we see Raiden under the influence of the Jinsei when it was corrupted. He talks to the two people that stand in front of him and he threatens them with a head of a certain former Elder God and told them, “There are fates worse than death.”

The two were Kitana and Liu Kang, the new rulers of the Netherrealm.

It is unknown at the moment of what will happen in the future Mortal Kombat game, but since Kitana and Liu Kang are the second timeline’s “Deadly Alliance,” they might oppose Raiden’s threat and cause more destruction. We do not know if Kitana and Liu Kang will be back to normal or they will be at peace if they happen to be eliminated.
