The ability to have friendly debates is what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Even when two people have completely, diametrically opposed viewpoints, they can come together to discuss them in a rational way. Hats off to Apex Legends pros Esteban 'NanoFRYS' Gomez and Will 'TeQ' Starck, because I couldn't be that patient.
As reported by Kotaku, the two met on stream to argue about whether the Earth - yes, the planet we live on - was flat or round. Gomez argued the Earth was flat, a position he adopted after watching a two-hour documentary on the subject, while Starck, an MIT aerospace engineer, argued the Earth was, in fact, round.
This is not the BBC. TheGamer doesn't have to present both sides of the debate as equally as valid as the other - a position that would be quite hard for us to take considering one side here is an engineer working for one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the world, and the other side is a guy who watched some YouTube videos.
Starck discovered that it was hard to utilise his personal academic experience and thousands of years of science to bring Gomez over to his side when the Flat Earther does not believe space or gravity exists.
Gomez at one point argued gravity was not real. A joke made in TheGamer's Slack said gravity is an unproven theory because birds aren't wet. At the time of writing, features editor and Chad Apex Legends enjoyer Ben Sledge says he can see "five wet pigeons on my garden fence right now," which, if anything, proves gravity is real, as the weight added by the waterlogging is maybe what's preventing the birds from flying.
Force is equal to mass multiplied by acceleration, so with the birds' increased mass, they'd need to take off with greater force to counteract the opposite force that gravity would be exerting on them.
Anyway.
The pair ended their discussion by agreeing to disagree, with neither changing the mind of the other. TheGamer's official stance on the matter is that the Earth is round, space and gravity are both real, and people have landed on the moon. We're undecided on whether or not dolphins are actually aliens though.
