The first Resident Evil game was released in 1996 and has inspired a ton of survival horror games over the years. Anyone that liked to be scared definitely had a copy of the first Resident Evil game on their PlayStation back in the 1990s. Although survival horror games are released on just about every console these days from the Xbox One to the Nintendo Switch, a lot of really good ones were released on the PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 and wasn't discontinued until 2013, meaning there was a ton of time for some really amazing games to come out. 10 Kuon

Kuon was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2004. It was never released on any other platforms, but it's still a popular game for people that are really into psychological horror games. This game is set in the Heian Period of Japan and is heavily inspired by Japanese horror stories called the kaidan, a word that refers to strange and mysterious apparitions.

The game is set in Heian-era Kyoto and follows three different characters. The player controls each of these characters during their respective chapters in the game as they explore an a feudal Japanese manor as ghosts and monsters follow them.

9 Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 is a survival horror game that was released on the PlayStation 2 back in 2001, but is also available on Xbox and PC. It was also remastered and re-released on modern consoles in 2012 as part of the Silent Hill HD Collection.

This is the second game in the infamous Silent Hill franchise and is a favorite among many people. Production on it started shortly after the release of the first game and it has a heavy emphasis on the slow, psychological form of horror that made the first game popular. This game follows James Sunderland as he travels to a mysterious town after receiving a letter from his dead wife.

8 Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame is the first game in the Fatal Frame franchise and was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2001 in Japan and 2002 in the rest of the world. It was also released on the original Xbox and several more games in the series have been released since then.

Fatal Frame is a survival horror franchise that is set in 1986. In the game, Mafuyu Hinasaki disappears while going to the ancient and allegedly haunted Himuro Mansion in order to track down a famous author. His sister, Miku, follows him to Himuro Mansion in order to find out what happened to him and discovers that the stories about this haunted mansion are very real.

7 Forbidden Siren

Forbidden Siren, also known simply as Siren in some regions, was released in 2003 in Japan and 2004 in the rest of the world. It was re-released on the PlayStation 4 in 2016 and has spawned two more games in the series and a movie loosely inspired by the game.

This game is set in a Japanese village called Hanuda. This village is full of people that are incredibly reclusive and isolated from the rest of the world. Much of the game follows the leader of a local religion, named Hisako Yao, who is working to try to bring a god to Hanuda through a ritualistic ceremony.

6 Haunting Ground

Haunting Ground is a survival horror game that was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. This game has become a really popular one in the world of survival horror, but good luck getting your hands on a copy. A new, complete copy of this game can run you up to $300, but gamers are often able to pick up just the disc to play for significantly cheaper.

This game follows an 18-year-old named Fiona who wakes up in a mysterious castle's dungeon after being in a car accident. Throughout the game, Fiona and a dog named Hewie explore the castle together as Fiona tries to figure out why she's there and how to get out and back to her real life.

5 Clock Tower 3

Clock Tower 3 is the fourth installment in the Clock Tower series and was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2002 in Japan and in 2003 in the rest of the world. Even though this game is the fourth in the franchise, this game is known for being mostly unrelated to the other games in the Clock Tower series as far as plot goes, making it an easy one for any survival horror fan to pick up and play.

This game follows a teenager named Alyssa who, like other members of her family has the power to travel through time in order to defeat enemies in different time periods. She travels back from the present day to the 1940s and 1960s in order to defeat evil.

4 Rule Of Rose

Rule of Rose is a survival horror game that was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006. This game is set in England in the 1930s and follows a 19-year-old named Jennifer who finds herself trapped in a terrifying world.

After being lead to a strange, abandoned orphanage, she finds herself transported to a mysterious abandoned airship. She learns that it's ruled by a cruel group of young girls, known as the Red Crayon Aristocrats.

3 Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is the fourth installment in the Alone in the Dark franchise and the first reboot of the survival horror series. The game was released in 2001 on several platforms, including the PlayStation 2.

The game is set in 2001 and follows Edward Carnby as he travels to Shadow Island, a mysterious island off the coast of Massachusetts, in order to investigate the death of his friend and partner, Charles Fiske.

2 The Suffering

The Suffering was released on the PlayStation 2, original Xbox, and PC in 2004. It was supposed to be ported to the GameCube, but the plans for this version of the game never came to fruition and that port of the game was never released.

The game follows a death row inmate named Torque who claims that he blacked out prior to his alleged crimes and that he's completely innocent of what he's been accused of. Shortly after arriving at the correctional facility where he's being kept, Torque becomes the target of some terrifying, supernatural events.

1 ObsCure

ObsCure is a survival horror game that was released on the PlayStation 2, PC, and original Xbox in 2004 in Europe and 2005 in North America. This game features five different teenagers as playable characters and the player chooses between them at different points in the game.

In the game, these five high school students are locked inside a school overnight so that they can search for their friend who has mysteriously gone missing. Soon after being locked inside the school, the students learn that many of the students have turned into terrifying, light-sensitive creatures.
