From RPGs, to horror survival, action-adventure, and tactical strategy games the offerings of the PS4 have been incredibly diverse. Many of the critically acclaimed titles have also garnered praise from the fanbase. Here are some titles that provide a sampling of the best that the PS4 had to offer.

Uncharter 4

Three years after finding the lost city of Iram of the pillars Nathan Drake has given up his former life of treasure hunting. But when his brother Sam appears out of nowhere seeking his help he finds himself drawn back into the chaos.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was well reviewed by critics as a fun and engaging title. With the emotional story of The Last of Us and the intense action of Just Cause it was a solid title that showcased Naughty Dog’s many talents.

9 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Metascore 93)

Metal Gear Solid V

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain saw the end of the story for Snake. It sits in the timeline between Ground Zeroes and the first Metal Gear with Snake seeking revenge on those who killed his people.

Critics had nothing but good things to say about this stealth-action title that would be Hideo Kojima’s last in the series. It was also the first open-world game in the Metal Gear series and was considered perfectly implemented by fans and critics alike.

8 Persona 5 (Metascore 93)

Persona 5

Players step into the shoes of a high school student with a mysterious alter ego in Persona 5. They soon learn that just about everyone has this Phantom side and some are looking to use it for evil. Now the player must learn the truth of their character’s Persona and the deeper plots going on.

Critics really enjoyed this JRPG citing the entertaining characters, colorful art-style, and a solid battle system. Many felt it was the kind of game you could sink hundreds of hours into and still come back for more.

There was a reason The Last Of Us Part 2 was so hyped and critics felt the game delivered on all fronts. The story was more emotional, darker, and action-packed than its predecessor. While many gamers were a bit disappointed with some of the narrative choices, the gameplay and horror were solid.

6 XCOM 2: War Of The Chosen (Metascore 93)

XCOM 2 War Of The Chosen

The fight against the alien ADVENT takes a disturbing turn when new factions and the mysterious Chosen rise up seeking power. The player must now contend with these powerful new adversaries, quell the evil uprisings, and find a way to keep the human race alive.

For many, the expansion was considered better than the original game. It resolved many of the issues in the original while also adding an engaging story, complex combat, and exciting new environments. For many, it was one of the best DLCs released for any game that year.

5 God Of War (Metascore 94)

God Of War

Having eradicated the Olympus pantheon Kronos settled down in the Norse lands to marry and bear a son. Terrified that his son might go down the same dark road he did, Kronos embarks on a mission to finally quell his own rage, teach his son to survive on his own, and find a way to prevent darkness from claiming the boy.

It was a stark contrast from the God of War series' earlier days that critics were blown away by. The meaningless chaos and story of revenge were replaced with a mature story of a father looking to protect his son and atone for past atrocities. It was a game few saw coming and were pleased to experience.

4 The Last Of Us Remastered (Metascore 95)

The Last Of Us Joel fighting a Hunter

The Last of Us Remastered revisits the story of Joel seeking to escort Elle to the Fireflies on the other side of the country. Along the way, they encounter various horrors, rely upon each other, and lead to the most talked about ending in gaming history.

Many questioned the wisdom in a remaster of the title, but Naughty Dog blew even the harshest critics out of the water. The game was dramatically improved in many ways and was highly recommended to new and old fans alike.

3 Persona 5: Royal (Metascore 95)

Persona 5 Royal

In the Persona 5: Royal DLC players must find themselves returning to the world for a new semester and new heists to perform. It expanded the story, the characters, and even made tweaks to the original battle system.

For critics, it was the perfect DLC. They loved the new characters, the grappling hook mechanic, and the ability to construct a Thieves Den. It took an already great game and gave players even more things to do in this JRPG.

2 Grand Theft Auto V (Metascore 97)

Grand Theft Auto V

The developers at Rockstar took their popular PS3 title and released it for the PS4. Players once again dove into the starlet filled world of Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V to commit the ultimate crime and build a fortune.

For critics, it was a welcome enhancement of the original title. The graphics were better, the gameplay was smoother, and capitalized on what the PS4 had to offer. For old fans and new fans, it was one of the best games to come out on the PS4.

1 Red Dead Redemption 2 (Metascore 97)

Red Dead Redemption 2

The most highly reviewed game for the PS4 is Rockstar’s other masterpiece, Red Dead Redemption 2. The era of the Wild West is slowly drawing to a close and the Van der Linde gang is on the run from federal agents, bounty hunters, and those they crossed on their path to riches.

Critics absolutely loved the open world, the freedom of play, and the emotional depth of the story. For many, it was a slow burn that built to a fun and engaging inferno in the final act of a twisting tale. Even after the story was finished players were enthralled to continue exploring the detailed world Rockstar had created.
