When Sony decided to go into the console market a lot of people wondered just what they would come up with. After all, a few short years earlier they were working side by side with Nintendo and now there were rumblings that the deal had fell through and the company was making their own console. When they revealed the PlayStation to the world it changed the gaming industry forever. It started a battle between Nintendo and Sony that still rages on to this day and brought in new players like Microsoft who hoped to make as big a splash into the console market themselves.

While not every system has had the same level of success from start to finish as the original, in the end, they have leveled out and ended up being profitable for the company, all while introducing the world to some iconic franchises. They gave game developers a platform that allowed them to transform their stories into amazing works of art and they continued to innovate and introduce the world to new pieces of technology that had never been used within the gaming industry before. It’s hard to argue their level of success and with their large contingent of fans, it’s hardly a surprise to see some pretty incredible PS4 modifications. In this article, we are going to take a look at some rather interesting case and console mods that relate to the PlayStation 4. Not all of the are great, but they're all strikingly creative.

27 Into Uncharted Territory (Lame)

The first step to creating a piece of artwork is coming up with an idea. Regardless of what you might think of a particular custom console you have to marvel at some of the concepts that artist have tried to execute.

Sometimes the design concept is world-class and the implementation of it just falls flat. Such is the case with this Uncharted-inspired PS4. They did a lot of things right here and they added a lot of elements to the game, but because there is no 3D detail work everything just looks washed out. It looks rushed and unfinished and (hopefully) they will revisit it and improve upon it.

26 The Days Are Numbered (Dope)

While this next entry might be (partly) a console skin, it isn’t really fair to leave it off because of that alone. Yes, I know, it really isn’t considered a modification, but the LED readouts on the top certainly are. It’s also worth noting that this was a custom designed skin for the console as well.

The different LED readouts really mesh well with the overall artwork and there are a few added LEDs to help with the uniformity of the console design. The modder added green LEDs to the eyes and also to the hands and latern. The surrounding areas make it pop out more.

25 Sucked Back Into The Rift (Lame)

There is nothing wrong with using wood as your material of choice, but it makes it so that you have to do an awful lot of work to bring your concept to life.

For me, this was a bit of a tough one. On one hand I want to say it’s good because it takes all the elements of Warcraft and pieces them together, but on the other hand, I want to say it’s not because it feels like they took the two major elements and sort of slapped them onto the wood. Sigh.

24 Return Of The Dark Knight (Dope)

Via: extreme-modding.de

Batman has gone through a lot of changes over the years and a lot of new elements have been added into the series that allow for artists to be more creative than ever before with their artwork. It’s a franchise that has spanned generations and continues to grow.

Though some Batman movies have missed the mark, most have continued to grow the franchise.

Given that the fan base only continues to grow, it isn’t really a shock to find all sorts of artwork related to the series out there. When I stumbled across this Batman-inspired PS4 I knew I had to put it on this list. It is truly a work of art and a sight to behold.

23 Hunk Of Metal (Lame)

Via: i.imgur.com

This one certainly isn't that bad. The color scheme is fine and I really like the carved out top of the system itself. The problem with it begins with the fact that it doesn’t really seem to match the game that it is attempting to emulate.

The original designer wanted their system to reflect Metal Gear Solid and, in particular, The Phantom Pain. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really seem to capture the key elements of the game. Like many, I was confused by the red objects on the left side of the console and I wasn’t sure if they were supposed to be blood bags or not. It just seems to me that the concept was lost on this one.

22 In A Galaxy Far Far Away (Dope)

If you’ve ever spent time on retro console case mod forums you will no doubt have come across some pretty amazing handheld renditions of your favorite consoles from the 90s. While these are certainly impressive, modders have continued to expand upon their abilities and have come to create some pretty interesting case modifications for the PS4.

It takes a lot of work in the area of soldering and rewiring to pull off many of these console mods.

Gamespot user eddienoteddy shared his rather incredible portable version of the PS4 fitted to a laptop form factor. He fashioned it after Star Wars and the level of quality and detail is simply awe-inspiring.

21 Knocking On Wood (Lame)

Via: design-milk.com

I’d like to start by saying that I think that what the designer did he was rather good in terms of the types of wood that they selected for this particular console mod. The overall look is a clean one and it appears to keep a lot of the features intact.

All that being said, other then changing the outside of the console to wood I don’t see a whole lot of modification going on here. I think that if they had done some wood engraving onto the console they could have really made their design shine.

20 Components On Show (Dope)

Via: psx-place.com

For a long time, it was rather difficult for anyone to find a standard computer case that had a lot to offer in terms of detail and design. Over time companies began to expand in that area though and we started to see different lighting effects along with see-through panels and some rather interesting case designs.

Keeping in line with the growing popularity of glass panels, one individual cut out the back side of the console to give you a better look inside at the components. Not only that, but they also added some vent holes for extra cooling.

19 Still Under Construction (Lame)

Via: extreme-modding.de

If someone asked you what kind of custom console you would want I highly doubt that you would come up with something like this. If you’ve ever come into contact with those granite countertops then you can understand the reasoning behind me saying that this is something that looks like it belongs in your kitchen rather than your family room.

There aren’t a lot of clues in this design to figure out where the artist was going with this concept.

As much as I dislike the concept behind this design I have to give the artist credit for doing a rather remarkable job with the LED lighting. The controller isn’t half bad either and it really does go well with the theme of the console.

18 Package Delivery (Dope)

Via: ips.pepitastore.com

When I first came across this case I sort of did a double take. I wasn’t sure if what I was looking at was the real deal or just a computer render of what a console like it might look like. Upon closer inspection though, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was indeed the real thing.

Sure, it might look like an ordinary briefcase, but when you consider the fact that they took the time to painstakingly craft leather onto the console and even added a handle and branded controller it really puts things into perspective. In a sense, it is hidden in plain sight, just like Agent 47 within the games.

17 Oh No Power Rangers (Lame)

Via: extreme-modding.de

Ideas are worth sharing and I think that many console modifiers might be better suited with sharing their design concepts with the community before going about creating them. In this way, they get valuable input and can make changes to their design without wasting time or materials down the road to make changes.

Given the popularity of Power Rangers, it is hardly a surprise to see custom cases like this one.

I would have like to see the Power Rangers symbol light up here or some sort of incorporation of the mech within the design, but it’s far from the worst one I’ve come across. I think with some refinement it could become one of the better case mods out there.

16 Calling Upon An Iconic Title (Dope)

Via: reddit.com

Alright, I know what you’re thinking. This might look like a console skin to you at first, but it’s important to note here that this design was actually hand drawn and painted onto the console itself. This isn’t something that is easy to do and it no doubt took a lot of time and effort to accomplish.

The custom console was being given away at a launch event for The Evil Within 2.

The game itself received relatively high marks and it’s why I am sure that any fan of the game would love to have this console sitting in their entertainment center. I do wish they had done some case modification though.

15 A Weird Transformation (Lame)

Via: imgur.com

When you take a concept like Transformers and decide to base a case mod on it there are a lot of directions you can take your design. It is perhaps for this reason that I was a bit underwhelmed by the console design presented here.

Don’t get me wrong, the brick engraving is rather impressive, but where it falls flat for me is in the two decals that are placed onto the side. They make it look like a last minute design and I feel they really detract from the overall concept.

14 Paying Homage To A Classic (Dope)

Via: mygaming.co.za

You might not have ever played an Atari and if you have you might not have enjoyed it, but one thing that can’t be argued is how beautiful the old consoles looked. They were unlike anything else on the market at the time and they really made think about giving their consoles a unique look.

Atari may have faded after the video game crash, but their iconic console still lives on.

For fans of the old system, there is good news too as a brand new console has been announced and is packed with over two hundred games. You won’t find any case mod that pulls the look off as good as this and it really does give it a retro feel.

13 Sailing The High Seas (Lame)

Via: customprotocol.com

The impact that RGB lighting has had on pretty much every electronic these days is hard to miss. It’s something that you notice more now when it is missing rather than when it’s there. You can do a lot of great things with it and you can really help to bring electronics to life and give them a unique look.

This was no doubt the idea behind this pirate-themed console mod. Once again the concept itself is fine, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. They could have made some engravings that helped to sell the idea of pirates, but instead, the lettering at the top seems to overshadow the pirate logo at the bottom.

12 Taking Steampunk By Force (Dope)

Via: escapistmagazine.com

It’s fair to say that Steampunk is an art form at this point. Sure, it borrows elements from a bygone era, but it does so in a way that it helps to bring new life to rather mundane looking electronics. That isn’t to say that a PlayStation 4 doesn’t get points for its design, but let's be honest, it isn’t exactly something you would call a work of art.

Yes, I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but common, you have to admit that this one is pretty darn good. Even if you aren’t a fan of Steampunk you have to concede that this is one of the most complex case mods you have seen.

11 Missing The Mark (Lame)

Via: extreme-modding.de

One of the hardest things about creating artwork in any form is remaining consistent throughout. If you don’t add the same level of detail throughout a particular piece it can really take away from the overall artwork and can sometimes become a distraction or focal point for the viewer.

This is exactly what I experience when I first viewed this Resident Evil inspired customization. There is a great level of attention to detail and depth on the left side, but it gets ruined the fact that the other two pieces on the right side seemed to have been slapped on later.

10 Calling Back To A Classic (Dope)

via twitter.com

There are a few games where you would be hard-pressed to find someone who wasn’t a big fan of them and Crash Bandicoot is certainly one of them. There was just something about the game that really drew you into it and made you want to continue playing it for hours.

With the worldwide success that was Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, it’s safe to say the franchise still has a lot of fans.

The announcement of its development is probably what inspired an artist to create this truly world-class custom PS4 case.

9 Blowing Off Steam (Lame)

Via: deviantart.com(steampunk22)

There’s already another Steampunk-inspired console mod on here, but I felt it would be good to give you another one for a fair comparison as to the varying degrees of detail. Unlike the other modified console on here, this particular custom console design feels a bit rushed and doesn’t really look uniform in concept at all.

Additionally, unlike the other Steampunk inspired console design, this one doesn’t appear to have buttons within the design itself that help the console function. Instead, it seems to only be a housing surrounding the console itself. It’s really hard to determine what the artist was going for here.

8 To The Fallout Shelter (Dope)

Via: Pinterest.com(xbplayagain.com)

There are some custom consoles on this list that many would consider not to be a true modification at all, but it would be rather unfair to not include at least a few repaints of the console like the one we see here. After all, it would be hard to argue that the artist didn’t make a lot of changes to the overall design of the console itself.

They make a good choices about which colors to use for their concept and it really fits with the Fallout theme. I would have liked to see the bottle caps come into play with the console itself or see some custom bottle cap buttons for the controller, but overall they did a great job.
