Undertale is an old-school looking game that has a lot more than just nostalgia bubbling under the surface. Undertale takes a ton of game-concepts that we've all accepted as common gameplay systems, and it questions and changes those mechanics in ways that stick with you far after finishing the game. The game has some utterly superb writing, great music, and intuitive combat systems. If you're looking for a game with more than meets the eye, then Undertale has you covered.

Bloodborne is a From Software game, and you know what that means: you're going to die. From Software games are generally praised for their combat systems, creative and beautiful level design, and their stories and world-building that slowly unravel the more you explore.

Bloodborne takes the formula From Software used in games like Demon Souls and Dark Souls and created a gothic, Lovecraftian horror-world full of nightmare fuel and darkness. This game has some of the best and most rewarding combat in all of gaming, and if you're looking for a challenge, this is where your journey begins.

Speaking of journeys, Journey is a game originally developed in the PS3 era of gaming and was released a few years afterward on the PS4. If you're looking for a chill game that you can complete in one session, Journey is a fantastic choice. A game simply about getting from point A to point B without much direction, Journey is a simple game that executes what it sets out to do perfectly. Meet other players along the way and communicate with the in-game music notes, or complete the Journey on your own. Either way, it's an experience that sticks with you.

Once again putting you in the shoes of Nathan Drake, Uncharted 4 presents a narrative unmatched by most other games. Writers Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr delivered an emotionally-charged story that turns the Uncharted series from a good series to a series isn't soon to be forgotten. Incredible graphics, fantastic acting, directing, and writing, along with solid gameplay make Uncharted 4 an impressive display of everything coming together to make something truly special.

There isn't really a plethora of good stealth games out there, but Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a fantastic entry into that list on its own. Huge open-world maps and the great stealth mechanics and gameplay you've come to expect from Hideo Kojima truly shine here, creating hundreds of hours of gameplay that really let you play the game your way. There's a great narrative experience here too, all creating a game that has wide-appeal for a huge audience.

One of the most unique games on this list, Persona 5 boasts an awesome art style, first and foremost. Persona 5 exudes so much energy and has so much supreme confidence in exactly what it is, that it's impossible for that feeling not to rub off on the player.

The game has a familiar while still somewhat innovative combat system, a huge wealth of side-content to explore, and a staggeringly long story that rewards your time and monetary investments.

4 GOD OF WAR (2018)

God of War (2018) is, objectively, one of the most well-written and well-directed pieces of entertainment ever created. Kratos transforms into an incredibly well-drawn character in this entry, without diverging from his history in the three games that came before. The gameplay is incredibly smooth, the combat is fun, and the game-world is an incredibly detailed and beautiful display of creators at the top of their game. If you've got a love for the fantasy genre, are looking for a fun combat system, or just looking for a world to lose yourself in, this is the game to pick up.

Another Naughty Dog title, (and, incidentally, another game written by Neil Druckmann) The Last Of Us is another emotionally-charged narrative; one that changed a lot of people's perception of games, and what they can accomplish, forever.

The characters in the game all feel like living and breathing people, and it's impossible not to grow attached to them as you experience this journey with them. Not to mention (no spoilers) that the end of the game will likely leave your jaw on the floor. (And, just maybe, make you cry. Like, just a little bit.)

Despite the alleged misconduct of many of Rockstar's higher-ups, they have some great developers and designers that have been making games that have not only graced the best of the PS4 list, but the best-ever lists. Grand Theft Auto V is in a class of only a few in terms of the sprawling and living open-world, a long and character-driven narrative, and vehicles that are really fun to drive around. There are definitely some outdated mechanics present, but as a whole, GTAV is a game unlike any other. Many have tried to replicate the success of the Grand Theft Auto series, and few have succeeded.

Another Rockstar title, Red Dead Redemption 2 presents another long and winding narrative full of characters that feel like real people. The environments in RDR2 are mostly unrivaled, bringing an air of realism that not many games are able to produce. Rob a train, track down a bounty target, play some Poker, or just wander around the wilderness to your heart's content. Red Dead Redemption 2 has plenty of options, and a world to explore. It is no wonder that it is the most highly ranked game available on the PlayStation 4.
