All gamers have been there before: they just bought that new video game that's been plastered on their brain for months. They're finally installing it only to end up with the dreaded message saying that the PS4 has insufficient space. Of course, not having enough storage space is something both console and PC players fear.

This usually isn't a big problem with smaller games, where uninstalling one game is enough. However, there are some games with notoriously large file sizes, forcing players, with great pain, to uninstall multiple games just to play one.

There's just no other way to address the insane minimum free space demands before installing certain games. Let's explore the 10 PS4 games with the biggest file sizes so that players can emotionally prepare themselves for forthcoming deletions.

Updated by Juliet Childers on November 5th, 2020: Despite the exponential growth when it comes to memory storage, consoles can't compete with PCs that have modular storage options. Game developers don't seem to take this into account even when developing console exclusive as game file sizes keep getting bigger and bigger. But which PS4 games dominate hard drives nowadays?

14 Mafia III (~ 46 GB)

The third installment in the Mafia series, Mafia III, follows the main formula of its predecessors. It is an open-world game filled with missions and story-lines that deal with the protagonist's dealings with the mafia. This game even includes some cameos from the previous game.

As it stands now, after getting all the patches the game weighs in at around 46 gigabytes. This isn't an awful lot these days, especially considering that this is an open-world game with fairly decent graphics.

While this is far from the biggest game on the market today, this is still a fairly big game and will take a sizeable chunk of your PS4 hard drive space.

13 Doom (~ 50-75 GB)

Doom 2016 cover

There are few FPS franchise reboots that made as big of a splash as Doom did in 2016, and with good reason. The game boasted tons of kickass content like a great arsenal of insane weapons, dozens of enemy types, intricate levels with secret areas, amazing music, etc. It comes as no surprise that a game jampacked with so much stuff would take a hefty amount of space.

Today, Doom takes up anywhere between 50 to 75 GB, depending on saves and patches. Even though this is quite a big game that takes a lot of space, rest assured that fans of FPS games will definitely find this one worth it.

12 Wolfenstein: The New Order (~ 50 GB)

Speaking of FPS franchise reboots, Wolfenstein: The New Order took everything that the previous games built up and turned it up to an eleven. Having tons of weapons, characters, scripted events, and locations for the player to explore, it's no surprise that the game takes up a decently big amount of storage space in return.

It has had a few patches since its release that, added together with save files and such, the total game size comes out to be around 50 GB big. It is a fair trade, however, because the game will take a while to complete, making the ~50 GB sacrifice worth it for many players.

11 The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (~ 50 GB)

By now, there can't be anyone who hasn't heard of The Witcher franchise due to the success of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt and the Netflix series. The third installment in the series of games is enormous, as anyone who has played it can attest. The base game has two major DLCs that further expand on the universe.

Although the amount of space the game takes up (including the DLCs and save files) is not ridiculously large, it is still a fair bit larger than standard indie games for example. To any fan of the franchise, be it the books or the series, this is a game that is absolutely worth every single gigabyte it takes up on a PS4.

10 Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (~ 55 - 64 GB)

Though this won't be the only Naughty Dog game on the list, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End certainly requires space on the hard drive. The puzzle-platformer shooter needs between 55 and 64 gigabytes of room to accommodate Nathan's epic hair and brow physics.

Beyond that, the lush backdrops and photo-realistic visuals require a ton of room. Some of the extra space is required for some paid for and free content for the multiplayer section of the game. But is it worth it for the game length and story?

9 Grand Theft Auto V (~ 68 - 76 GB)

Grand Theft Auto V may be the game released across the most consoles and generations of technology in the history of video games. Though it first released in 2013, the game has seen many updates due to its popularity. The detailed open world that is fairly large can be blamed for its file size.

But this also relates to the number of patches released in the six years since it originally came out. Next-gen console owners will also get updates for their PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, so this file size may yet get bigger.

8 The Elder Scrolls Online (~ 85-120 GB)

The Elder Scrolls Online is a huge MMORPG with a relatively lively player base to this date. As a result of its popularity, t it keeps getting expansions. Honestly, who wouldn't want to play an Elder Scrolls game in MMO form?

The game is huge with tons of interesting locations to visit and quests to complete. Of course, because of this, it is also huge in size and can amount to a staggering 120 GB if players have all the expansions that add additional content.

To gear up to explore the entire game and experience every little thing it has to offer, be sure to have a lot of free space available beforehand.

7 Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 (~ 85 GB)

The Call of Duty franchise is enormous at this point, which is something everyone who has at least a little interest in video games knows. What also seems to be enormous about this franchise is the file sizes of the games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is a great example of the trend of FPS games being stuffed with more and more content. This trend pushed this game's size up to around 80 GB on a PS4 with DLCs and quite a few save files.

A game of this size is no joke, so if players ever want to try this game, TheGamer really recommends to prepare at least 80 GB of free space or getting an external hard drive.

6 The Last of Us 2 (~78 - 100 GB)

The long-awaited sequel to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us dwarfs the original remaster's size by a minimum of 25 GB. Though the base game will occupy around 78 GB on any PS4 hard drive, the game requires a full 100 GB of free space to download.

This necessitates deleting multiple games to, again, just play one title. While many fans can justify this for the unique experience that The Last of Us 2 provides, it won't be that way for everyone.

Maybe the game file size needed to be this big in order to accommodate Abby's huge guns? Regardless, the incredible graphics and lively, but dangerous world of the game will wow any veteran gamer.

5 Final Fantasy XV (~ 100 GB)

Everyone remembers the hype that followed the release of Final Fantasy XV with fans rushing to get their copies as soon as possible. This game was full of surprises with the most notable being the amazing graphics and a new, action-packed real-time-fighting system.

As time went on, the game got expansions as well as patches that turned this game into more of a burden on the PS4's hard drive. As of today, the game would take up around 100 GB of space including the DLCs.

Although the file size is huge, freeing up an extra 100 GB for this game should be a no-brainer for any hardcore fan of the franchise.

4 Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (~80 - 101GB)

Call of Duty franchise games take up not one, but three spots on this list of 14 games. Though not the top user of storage space, Call of Duty: Blacks Op 3 clocks in at a whopping 80 - 100 gigabytes.

The base game alone is an entire 55 GB. Updates, DLC, and patches continue to grow the file size allowing for such a large fluctuation in overall size. But fans looking for more CoDBlOps experiences will likely have to pick one at a time due to the games' file sizes.

3 Red Dead Redemption 2 (~ 105 GB)

It is impossible to make a list of games with the biggest file sizes without mentioning the giant that is Red Dead Redemption 2. This western-themed game is mainly a single-player, but it also includes an online multiplayer. The world is so huge and packed with content, that there is no chance for gamers to play it on a PS4 unless they have an extra 100 GB lying around. The kicker is that a hundred gigabytes might not be enough, due to patches and save files.

Even though the size of the game might scare off some potentially interested people, rest assured that the overall experience gained from it is worth uninstalling a couple of games. Fans also have the option of playing it on PC now, as well.

2 Destiny 2 (~ 165 GB)

Yes, that is correct: Destiny 2, as a whole, can take up to a whopping 165 GB on your console. To be fair, however, this size balloons up to that enormous size with all of the expansions that have come out to date, as well as the numerous patches.

Nevertheless, if players want to experience everything that the developers have created, the amount of space needed is nothing to sneeze at. Those interested in trying it out will definitely have to sacrifice a couple of installed games.

1 Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare (~ 175 GB)

To finish it off, we have reached the colossus of games that take up a ridiculous amount of space: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Many people were left scratching their heads when this reboot got announced. After all, the original got an HD remake not too long ago. This game, however, is quite different on a lot of fronts, especially graphics.

Although the base game isn't too big, Activision has confirmed that the space the game would take up including all future DLCs would be around 175 GB. The base game file size tops the majority of games on this list with 107 GB. One update could run 50 GB a.k.a. the size of a Witcher III or Wolfenstein.

It's safe to assume that even the biggest fans of Call of Duty would have to think twice before installing the game since it would take up more space than at least four to five regular games.
