We’ve finally embarked on the next generation and some PlayStation owners have been giving their PS4s a swan song playthrough. Upgrading consoles doesn’t mean goodbye to collectors, but to most, it’s out with the old and in with the new. One fan has put their goodbye to the PS4 in a compilation video, and it’s a tad emotional.
YouTuber Gameplay No Commentary has compiled a two-and-a-half-minute long tribute to a smörgåsbord of PS4 games, that have served us well for the past seven years. Anything with hints of "so long, farewell" has connotations of sadness, and the video’s soft, electronic music aids its reflective tone. The video also contains voice-overs from in-game characters reciting their best lines - which is a tearjerker. The video’s thumbnail features a handful of drawn characters bustling together to recreate the famous celebrity selfie from the 2014 Oscars, designed by David Müller.
Gameplay No Commentary’s tribute features clips from the best of the best, opening with Knack, Infamous: Second Son, and Bloodborne. The video gets especially poignant when Trico from The Last Guardian leaps on screen, closely followed by a stunning wide shot from Shadow of the Colossus. The tribute then becomes an homage to Uncharted 4 and a nod to the machines of the PS4 era, with Detroit: Become Human and Horizon Zero Dawn. The action kicks in with scenes from God or War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and The Last of Us 2, concluding on a rhythmic flash of picturesque scenes from Ghost of Tsushima. A handful of other games were also sandwiched into the mix for a share of the spotlight.
The creator proceeded to thank Sony for an amazing history of consoles and also showed gratitude towards developers Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, and more. The video was met with positive feedback, however, most users felt like there was no need to say goodbye to the system. Praise was shown to the YouTuber for highlighting a fantastic run of games, despite some mention of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s absence - the creator said it was accidentally forgotten.
The video’s ending was apt as Ghost of Tsushima has won the Player’s Voice award from The Game Awards, and it is also a shoo-in for Game of the Year. With so many greats to choose from, and a handful of latecomers to heat up the competition, The Game Awards will be insightful to see what games made an impact this year.
