There are things that don't make sense in The Last of Us Part II and then there are things that are actively left unanswered. What happened to these characters after the game ended? Where will the story go next? Will Naughty Dog even continue their story?
All of those questions and more will more or less be answered in this article. That is to say, they will be addressed. Some of them will have some answers with guesses, while others will just bring up the questions. Again, there is a lot to go through so let's get to these spoiler-filled details.
10 Scars Vs The WLF
What was the conclusion in regard to the WLF invading the Scar’s territory? Who is left? For that matter, is Isaac still alive? Considering Tommy got shot in the head and survived, anything is possible.
At the end of the day, this battle did not mean much to the overall narrative. That said, this could still prove troublesome for Abby and Lev in the future for The Last of Us.
9 What’s With The Scars?
The WLF was a faction that seemingly took over Seattle following a rise up against FEDRA. Players are left to fill in the rest of the blanks with them.
As for the Scars, or Seraphites, not much is really known. Are they really just a cult, or did their idol actually stand for something peaceful? If she did, then who betrayed their peaceful teachings? There is so much left to explore in regard to this group in the world of The Last of Us.
8 The Rattlers
Another group that was barely explored in Naughty Dog's sequel was the Rattlers, who are found in California. Even with notes and context clues, it’s a bit hard to piece together.
What did they stand for and what did they want? Chaos? For that matter, who were their prisoners? Were they just random survivors or were they actually formerly Firefly members? This plotline felt rushed in The Last of Us Part II.
7 Are There Fireflies Or Not?
On the subject of Fireflies, if those prisoners weren’t apart of the group, were there any left in California to begin with? If not in California, then surely there must be some remnants somewhere.
One could easily think they are gone, but this could be an example of a dark middle chapter. As the Firefly motto goes, “When you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light.” There may be hope for both the Fireflies and Ellie yet.
6 What Happened To Tommy?
As it was mentioned earlier, it looked like Tommy was shot in the head in the theater, but he somehow survives. He lost his wife, eyesight in one eye, and walks with a limp. He’s a broken man who couldn’t get revenge for his brother either.
Rather than be thankful for what he has and for the life Ellie made after the conflict with Abby, Tommy still can’t let go. It felt like a betrayal of Tommy’s character from The Last of Us so what really happened after that night?
5 Where Did Dina Go?
Dina, out of nowhere, decided to go on a revenge trip with Ellie. They bond and are seemingly in love despite the gruesomeness they endure. Then, after the theater, Dina somehow decides that any more fighting is the last straw with Ellie.
This too felt like a betrayal of the character. If she is so upset over Ellie leaving, then why did she think it was a good idea to move to the middle of nowhere with a new baby? Being in an open area like that with just two adults is not very safe from the threat presented by survivors or the infected. The point is Dina shouldn’t be pointing fingers.
4 Ellie’s Choice
This might be the most confusing thing in the game. Ellie is mad at Joel, but players find out she wanted to forgive him. His death cemented that fact which is why she went on a revenge trip. Then, at the theater when Abby let her go again, this seemed to change her perspective on life.
Revenge isn’t worth it so she instead moves out to the country with Dina to become a parent. Then she decides revenge must be made again only to give up on it when it is in her grasp. It’s a step that was taken in the narrative to hammer home that revenge is an endless cycle.
3 What Happened To Abby & Lev?
How long were Abby and Lev tortured? It can take a while to lose weight and muscle mass like that, therefore it could have been a couple of months, or so. The real puzzle here is trying to figure out where they went next.
A boat like that couldn’t get them far. Going back to Seattle is out of the question for sure, but one never knows with these two. The Last of Us Part III could get into it.
2 Are There Other Immunes?
This is the big question that Naughty Dog left players with at the end of The Last of Us. Are there really any other immune people out there, or is Ellie really it? Statistically, that seems impossible.
An interesting place the third game could go would be for Ellie to find another immune person, or maybe even a secret community of them. Maybe there is something darker at hand with that.
1 The World
Another big question concerns the game's world. Based on the journey in The Last of Us, the United States looks pretty banged up. What about the rest of the world though? It would be interesting to see how the infected has spread to other countries.
That could definitely open up possibilities to tell new stories. Maybe there is a country unaffected completely which would be wild.
