The PlayStation 4 was announced back in February of 2013 and was released, to North America, later that year in November. The PS4 brought with it a number of features that were new to the console, including its ability to interact with smartphones and tablets, and the addition of the touchpad to the DualShock 4.

The touchpad takes the place of the "Start" and "Select" buttons. While it has the appearance of one large button, it has two distinct sides that act separate from one another. Along with this new feature came games that utilize the functions of the touchpad. We've added 5 more of the best ones to our existing list, for a total of 15.

While the function never quite caught on to a heavy degree, those games that did implement touchpad functionality were arguably better off for it. Be sure to try them out!

15 Blacklight: Retribution

It didn't make enough headway on PC to sustain itself, but Blacklight: Retribution did find success on the PS4 while taking advantage of the touchpad as well. This cyberpunk FPS shooter received high critical praise for its presentation and attention to detail.

This includes the use of the touchpad for such things as taunting enemy opponents, drawing tertiary weapons, and checking the scoreboard. This helped the development of the project, as Hardsuit Labs admitted that they had run out of buttons on the PS4 controller for certain functions.

14 Injustice: Gods Among Us

This DC-themed brawler from NetherRealm Studios brought in Mortal Kombat-style fighting game mechanics and a similar approach to a progressive storyline involving some of pop culture's most recognizable superheroes.

Touchpad functionality came into play via the mini-games, where its responsiveness could be used to control various hit mechanics, such as Superman's eye beams. Though it wouldn't exactly spread its influence on the actual fighting mode, it was an inventive use of the touchpad.

13 NBA 2K14

The touchpad came into use quite prominently in NBA 2K14 by allowing players to switch up their strategy by swiping it to switch between 1-3-1, 2-3 or other techniques to throw off the opposition.

In addition, pressing down on the touchpad allowed gamers to check the rhythm of the player in question, and their confidence on the court. This helped gamers strategize the best plays, depending on the fortitude of the individual player.

12 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

This open-world style game was a major departure from previous titles in the LEGO video game franchise. It also sported a humorous, thoroughly enjoyable storyline that was perfect for the entire family, while offering a break from more complex PS4 titles.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes fans enjoyed a little bit of extra luxury thanks to the PS4's touchpad, which offered full control of the map via swipe and click functionality. This made accessing the map and setting destinations an easy, hassle-free affair.

11 Elite Dangerous

This well-received space shooter has a lot of controls to memorize, and the touchpad certainly helps out by simplifying some more of the complex maneuvers present in the game.

Tapping various parts of the touchpad allows gamers to cycle between fire groups, access the target panel, or the systems panel. In the heat of battle, this level of convenience can make the difference between winning or losing.

10 Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

2013 brought the reboot of the iconic Tomb Raider franchise. It re-shapes Lara Croft's origins and allows players to accompany an untested and not yet battle-hardened Lara as she tries to save her friends. Originally released on the PlayStation 3, the next year saw the release of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which is a port for the next-gen consoles of its time.

Aside from better graphics and a handful of bonus content, the Definitive Edition included a few new controls made for the PS4 specifically. One is a small, but charming edition, where you can light and ignite torches using the touchpad. The controller even glows red, adding a tiny bit of realism to make you feel like you're actually there!

9 Watch Dogs

The Ubisoft game Watch Dogs was released in 2014 and is the beginning of the Watch Dogs series. Players take control of hacker Aiden Pearce, whose out for revenge after a botched hacking leads to the death of his niece. 11 months after her death he tracks down those who he believes were involved with the incident and uncovers a darker conspiracy going on in Chicago.

Watch Dogs was available for both current and next-gen consoles of the time, meaning you could play it on both the PS3 and the PS4. The PS4 version allowed you to access the map by just pressing the touchpad.

8 Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Assasin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set in the Carribean during the 18th century. Players get to become the pirate Edward Kenway during the Golden Age of Piracy. Black Flag marks the first time players can explore the seas, as the game includes taking over passing ships and even swimming to nearby islands.

It overall has a more open world feel to it, and it's easier to access the map with the DualShock's touchpad. Pressing it down lets you pull up the map and you can zoom in and move around it using the touchpad like the trackpad on a laptop.

7 Detroit: Become Human

Detriot: Become Human is an adventure game developed by Quantic Dreams, the same studio behind Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. The game takes place in the not-so-distant future where technology has advanced to create completely functioning androids.

Players follow the intertwining stories of 3 androids: Kara, Markus, and Conner and shape their fate based on the choices they make. Throughout the game, there are many objects that can be interacted with, including 46 magazine collectibles. These and other objects require the use of the touchpad to scroll through and read them.

6 Until Dawn

Until Dawn is a survival horror exclusive title for the PS4. This interactive game has players control the actions of several different characters during a party that turns deadly. The game has a "butterfly effect" feature, with nearly every choice affecting future outcomes in the game and the character's chances of surviving.

The game can be split up into two types of game modes, "action mode" where players have to successfully complete QTEs and "exploration", where you explore the environment and search for clues that can be crucial for future events. Until Dawn using the touchpad for situations like this, like when you're turning a page, unlocking a smartphone, or lighting a match.

5 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain follows Venom Snake as he seeks revenge against the people who destroyed his forces in Ground Zeroes. The game focuses on stealth and encourages players to take out their enemies non-lethally.

It also has a large map and encourages players to freely roam the world and complete objectives in any order they see fit. An important item in the game is the iDroid, which has a number of functions, including bringing up the map and calling in transport. And using all these functions is as simple as using the touchpad.

4 Gravity Rush 2

Gravity Rush 2 has players return as Kat and gives her two new gravity styles, Jupiter and Lunar. The first makes her heavier and hit harder, and the second makes her lighter and faster. Just as with the first game, players have to use the game's gravity-controlling mechanics to traverse through environments and fight off enemies.

And with the PS4 controller, you can control and switch between each of her styles. Not only will you need different ones for different situations, but battling enemies will often call for strategically switching between them to achieve the best results.

3 Killzone Shadow Fall

Killzone Shadow Fall takes place 30 years after the events of Killzone 3, with rising tension and the threat of war breaking out once again between the Helghast and the Vekta. You play as Shadow Marshal Lucan Kellan. Along with a number of different weapons that Shadow Marshal Kellan can use at his disposal, there is a hovering attack drone called the OWL.

It's attached to a Shadow Marshal's suit and has a number of tactical abilities, including creating an energy shield, attack and stun enemies, and more. And the way players control the OWL is through the touchpad on the controller.

2 Tearaway Unfolded

Tearaway Unfolded is the 2015 remake of the PlayStation Vita game, Tearaway. Created from the same company that brought Little Big Planet, the game takes place in a vibrant world made out of paper. Players take control of either Atoi or Iota, a messenger who must deliver a letter to a portal, and battle against small creatures that threaten to destroy the world.

Just as with the PSVita, Tearaway Unfolded revolves around interacting with the environment and customizing it to help Iota or Atoi traverse through the world. Where you could draw tools and objects on the PSVita, you now draw them on the touchpad.

1 Infamous: Second Son

Taking place 7 years after the events of Infamous 2, players take on the role of Delsin Rowe a graffiti artist Conduit who can absorb the powers of other Conduits. In an interview with Polygon the director of Sucker Punch (the game's developer) Nate Fox, explained that DualShock's touchpad allowed them to set a "good change of pace" for how players control Delsin and "bring themselves closer into being Delsin".

Second Son has tons of situations that require players to use the touchpad, from placing their fingers on the right part to get through security checkpoints, absorbing powers, to stealth kills. You can even use it for Delsin's graffiti art by tapping the touchpad!
