The ongoing worldwide console shortage is now affecting the last generation, driving up the price of second-hand PS4s.

Odds are you will have read an almost endless number of reports, reasons, and excuses surrounding the ongoing struggle to land a next-gen console. Especially if you are still trying to find one yourselves. Despite supply still not meeting demand, both PlayStation and Xbox reported this week that their newest consoles are the fastest-selling in their respective histories.

More than 10 million people already own a PS5. However, for a number of different reasons, the ongoing plight to try and get a PS5 has had a knock-on effect on the availability of PS4s. So much so that the resale price of the last-gen console has skyrocketed, especially in Canada. Numerous PS4s are currently listed on eBay and Amazon's Canadian sites for hundreds of dollars, with the most expensive one we could find having a price tag of more than $1000.

Other than PS4 production being as affected by the ongoing semiconductor shortage as the PS5 and Series X, PlayStation's focus on its new console will have also had an impact. With 10 million consoles sold and that still not being nearly enough to reach everyone who wants a PS5, it's all hands on deck for Sony when it comes to manufacturing them. That means the far less in-demand PS4's production will have taken a back seat.

In fact, indicators online and in Japan shortly after the PS5 launched revealed that production on pretty much all models of PS4 has been halted entirely. Annoying for those who still want the console and now face having to pay more for one than they would a PS5, but a step that would have resulted in even fewer PS5s being out there had Sony not taken it.

If you want a brand new PS4, then you might well be out of luck. A post on ResetEra that first alerted us to the lofty resale prices of PS4s claims that pretty much all major retailers that carry consoles have been out of stock since March. Getting one from here on out will require buying it from a reseller, and judging by the prices of them on those sites right now, you might want to leave it a few months before you try to pick one up.
