When Sony released its logo for the upcoming and highly anticipated next-generation PlayStation 5 console, the company had probably thought it had seen the last of internet memes concerning the PS5. But wasn't until the much-hyped and anticipated controller was released to the public that the internet went absolutely crazy.
After promising the controller would be similar to that of the PS4 with a much sturdier body, many PS players probably expected something a bit closer to the original DualShock controller. Instead, the fans were given, well, whatever this is, and the reactions are absolutely hilarious.
Updated on June 29th, 2020 by Anastasia Maillot: Now that Sony has finally released a ton of new information on its upcoming console, as well as actually showcased the console itself, it's safe to say that the hype for PlayStation 5 is through the roof.
Nevermind the fact that the company has yet to announce its most likely astronomical price, because everyone seems to have a lot of thoughts and opinions about this next-generation console which will define years of gaming to come. Its highly futuristic look, and its controller in particular, have inspired people to create some pretty relatable memes.
15 Cure For The Pandemic
With everything going on in the world right now, it's bound for people to try and find ways to smile even amid a pandemic. The PS5 controller looks so versatile, that it could easily pass off as other objects as well, especially when it's flipped around and combined with other objects, like here.
Although the controller probably won't keep people safe from a pandemic (other than by keeping us in self-isolation), it's still a cool design idea for a reusable mask. Make it happen, Internet: a PS5 controller mask!
14 Eve?!
Perhaps the most obvious comparison between the PS5 controller and pop culture has been that of Eve from WALL-E. It might seem like a stretch, but there's so many design similarities with the controller and the original character design of Eve, that it's hard to ignore the similarities.
The sides of the controller in particular look like her hands, and the blue lights at the center are just like her eyes. If Sony suddenly came out and said it had indeed been inspired by WALL-E, nobody would be surprised in the least.
13 The Super Suit
It's not just WALL-E that's been brought up as a reference to the PS5 controller, but also Frozone, one of the supporting characters from Disney's popular franchise The Incredibles. Again, the similarities are just undeniable all around, especially for the helmet part of the suit.
Frozone's helmet has the same kind of blue design that the controller has, and a similar sleek white minimalist look. Although his suit isn't actually anything like the controller, the headpiece is just too close to ignore how hilariously alike they look.
12 Decepticon In Disguise
It's been quite a year, and the Internet has been vocal about commenting on it as well. Some have been speculating mankind is living the end of its times, and wondering what could be coming after a pandemic. A robot uprising, maybe?
When it comes to evil robots, the first that immediately pops to mind are the Decepticons of the Transformers franchise. The sleek appearance of these creatures and their ability to hide among humans, transformed as ordinary household objects, puts not only the PS5 controller under suspicion, but the entire console as well.
11 Captain Controller
The comparison of objects to characters or outfits is a pretty common meme in the depths of the Internet, but one that never seems to get old. It's also just a really cool way of seeing how design ideas and concepts really do transcend franchises and brands.
Captain America's two suits here can be easily compared to the two versions of the PS controller. One is old, one is new and improved. Who knows, it's entirely possible that some really cool custom Marvel-themed controllers and consoles will be out once the initial release is done by Sony.
10 Carnivore Teeth
The first thing to notice about the DualSense is that it has a lot of white. Granted, there's probably — hopefully — going to be a black version of it, but it's strange how much it actually resembles the teeth of a wild cat.
Clearly, the internet thought the same, and it's easy to see why the resemblance here is pretty much uncanny. Cool, but also, slightly weird.
9 Surprising Movie Reference
That's right, there was something else that the DualSense reminded fans of: a certain popular movie from the '70s, which in its opening scene features a fun, familiar-looking piece of fashion.
The original Star Wars film was not only ahead of its time in terms of special effects and storytelling, but looks like they also predicted what the PS controller would look like in 2020.
8 Copy Plus Paste
It's true — it's pretty hard to be original in this day and age. Most games tend to have very similar storylines and mechanics, and blaming the developers for that would be a little bit unfair. In a way, everything's already been done.
That being said, surely Sony could have come up with a slightly more original design than just a PS-ified version of Xbox's controller... right?
7 Hybrid Controller
The funny part in this whole DualSense controversy is that there is in fact a controller that already looks an awful lot like it. Yes, Xbox fans, the controller you've been using for years has now been pretty much replicated for PS5.
Sure, it's not exactly the same. It's more of a hybrid, much like if the Xbox controller and PS4 controller had a baby.
6 Rangers As Controllers
Power Rangers fans will no doubt feel some sort of mysterious pull towards Sony's brand new controller. In fact, it looks a lot like one of the Power Rangers themselves, the white one in particular.
And as for the actual black Xbox controller, there's no doubt it reminded some fans of the Black Ranger. The similarities are definitely there. Perhaps Sony's staff watched the original Super Sentai series as inspiration?
5 Behind The Scenes
By now, it's pretty evident as to what everyone thinks the new controller looks like or has at least been inspired by. But rather than seeing it as a negative thing, maybe the DualSense is the Super Saiyan in this scenario?
Let's not judge the controller too quickly. Although it looks funky, it might actually be more powerful and amazing than it appears.
4 The Better Color Choice
Well, it's no secret the whole of internet believes the DualSense has terrible colors. There's a reason some of the most sold controllers tend to be black; in terms of maintenance, it's just easier to clean and maintain.
Thankfully, fans have already imagined what the DualSense would look like in full black. While Sony hasn't officially released anything yet, it's likely there will be other variations.
3 Detroit: Become DualSense
The most popular comparison the DualSense received was to Wall-E's EVE, which is pretty fitting given the color schemes. However, what most people ignored was how it also looked like something David Cage could have imagined.
Given the colors and the shapes, it's no wonder some people thought of Connor from Detroit: Become Human, and his selection of dapper android uniforms.
2 Wii Fit
One of the weirdest parts about the DualSense is how the black-and-white is divided on the controller, as well as the blue light stripes on each side of its base. It looks a lot like something familiar, almost like the top of a fitness instructor from a very familiar fitness game.
The internet was quick to confirm everyone's perceptions, and juxtaposed the controller with the Wii Fit Trainer's upper body. At least now it's clear where Sony got its initial inspiration from.
1 The Biggest Mistake
It's no secret that whenever something new is released and it's vastly different from something old and familiar, negative emotions run wild. Whether or not fans really think this is the worst thing ever made, it'll be interesting to see how the controller holds up.
For now, however, it's pretty amusing to compare this controller controversy to some previous fiascoes in the gaming industry. Worry not, Fallout fans and Death Note enthusiasts, DualSense might just top both of those unfortunate footnotes as the biggest mistake of 2020. Too bad the decade's only begun.
