A patent filed by Sony suggests that the PlayStation 5's controllers are going to be very different to the Dualshock 4 gamers have grown accustomed to.

As gamers continue to speculate what they'll be treated to in the next generation of consoles, our attention has been turned to controllers. A console's controller is more important to the whole makeup of a system than they get credit for. Nintendo and Microsoft have constantly adapted their offerings, trying to find the perfect model.

Sony, on the other hand, pretty much hit a home run right out the gate. The controllers first introduced to the gaming world in 1994 are very similar to the ones players use today on the PS4, bar a couple of tweaks between then and now. The addition of analog sticks and the touchpad now found in the middle, for example.

The basic shape of PlayStation's controllers has remained pretty consistent. However, that might be about to change. A patent filed by Sony, and first discovered by Let's Go Digital!, has revealed that the PS5's controllers might look very different from any PS controller that has come before it. As you can see from the mock-up below, the controllers could well be rectangular blocks, kind of like NES ones.

These potential PS5 controllers will be a lot more advanced than their NES counterparts, of course. The screen in the middle appears to be the hub for everything you can do with the console, and it's a lot more than play games. There are options to watch TV, listen to music, and even check your email. The patent also reveals that the controllers will be equipped with fingerprint readers and heartbeat sensors.

Perhaps the most striking thing about the controller is its shape. One of the most important things to consider when designing a controller is the players' comfort. These potential PS5 controllers do not look comfy to hold in the slightest. Our guess right now, if the above does come to fruition, is that they are some sort of control pad for the console and everything it controls - that the controllers will be smaller and more similar to what PlayStation has become known for.
