Video game aficionados everywhere are on the hunt for their next-gen consoles, if any retailers will allow it. The farce that was “launch day” for Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X brought uncertainty to customers who had pre-ordered, and extreme anxiety to those who didn't manage to bag an order.

However, as a glimmer of hope shone from GameFly headquarters, there was a catch involved in obtaining the holy grail. GameFly’s disclaimer specified that its PS5 bundle was a special order, which would be limited to active GameFly rental members. It was a sneaky setback that forced many people to flock to the member’s page, and hurl money at GameFly faster than you can toss a coin to your Witcher.

The rental service had a few bundles left, which included the PS5 disk variant, the DualSense wireless controller, a copy of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and a 9-month GameFly gift certificate. However, like hot cakes, they sold fast. All that remains is a grey box with the words “sold out” on the exclusive bundle’s page. No doubt word traveled fast, and people still without their copy will either have to get lucky, wait until the hype calms down, or try their hand at winning one from Big G cereal packets.

Horror stories of customers who received a PS5 and immediately resold it for profit have continued to niggle the patience of genuine buyers. Z-list UK celebrity James Taylor may be known from the reality show Made in Chelsea, but his name was tarnished after he reportedly purchased a PS5 only to resell it for £1200 (approx $1600). Contributing to Britain’s bad rep, UK retailer CEX - known for selling second hand consoles, games, and DVDs - was also reselling the Xbox Series X for £690; more than 50% mark up on store prices.

If you want to avoid Amazon’s debacle - which saw customers receive cat food and coffee machines instead of PS5s - then Walmart may be your next beacon of hope. The American retailer is selling PS5 and Xbox Series X stock online, starting November 25. Time to roll up your sleeves and pray that the servers don’t crash.
