The PS5 sold more units than any other console in the US last month, ending a 33-month streak previously held by the Nintendo Switch.

Even though it has been on the market for almost a year at this point, a lot of people are still struggling to get their hands on a PS5. Whenever a new batch pops up somewhere, they sell out almost instantly. PlayStation will actually be selling some directly from the source this holiday season. You can register your interest now if you reside in the US.

The tweet below might be evidence that there were more PS5s out there in September than ever before. The next-gen console was the best-selling console in the US in terms of units sold. While the exact numbers are not provided, it does mean PlayStation has broken an almost-three-year-long streak held by Nintendo up until last month.

The Switch has sold more units than any of its rivals every single month since December 2018. The month before that, it was outsold in terms of units by the PS4. That's almost three years of dominance on that front that has now been brought to an end by the PS5. No word on whether the Xbox managed to close the gap too, or whether the Series X and Series S sales are conflated or counted separately.

Although the PS5's supply still can't meet demand, it's somewhat unsurprising that the Switch's 33-month reign came to an end now. Not only is PlayStation's console becoming slightly easier to find with each passing month, but many people waiting to buy a new Switch probably waited it out until the OLED model arrived on October 8. These numbers only account for the US too which didn't see the regular Switch get the same price cut as it did in Europe.

October's numbers will make for very interesting reading. Nintendo will have to consider it a failure if the Switch doesn't return to the top of the units-sold pile this month. October's numbers will include the OLED model's sales and the updated console appears to have been an unexpected hit. People will continue to buy up PS5s whenever and wherever they're available too, of course. If there are enough available, it might well start up a streak of its own.
