People excited for the PlayStation 5 might want to hold off for a few years. A new interview now suggests that a PlayStation 5 Pro is in the cards further down the line.

Hardware revisions have become more common over time, as Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have released alternate versions of their hardware throughout their life cycle. The Nintendo 3DS jumped to the XL model, which was a lot bigger in size, and then it became the New model, which was a lot faster and had a better 3D screen. The PlayStation 4 was released in 2013 and it had several revisions in its lifespan, including the thinner Slim model and the more technically impressive Pro model that allowed 4K rendering.

It seems that the PlayStation 5 is also going to be receiving hardware revisions throughout its run. Game Informer recently spoke to several key figures within Sony and Masayasu Ito (executive vice president of hardware engineering and operation at Sony Interactive Entertainment) discussed how the PlayStation 4 Pro was the test case for how the PlayStation 5's life cycle will be handled.

Indeed, in the past, the cycle for a new platform was 7 to 10 years, but in view of the very rapid development and evolution of technology, it’s really a six to seven year platform cycle. Then we cannot fully catch up with the rapid development of the technology, therefore our thinking is that as far as a platform is concerned for the PS5, it’s a cycle of maybe six to seven years. But doing that, a platform lifecycle, we should be able to change the hardware itself and try to incorporate advancements in technology. That was the thinking behind it, and the test case of that thinking was the PS4 Pro that launched in the midway of the PS4 launch cycle.

The mid-console life cycle revision hasn't always been met with enthusiasm by fans, especially those who feel that they contain features that should be in the base model. It's also surprising to hear a Sony representative be so candid about the possibility of hardware revisions for the PlayStation 5, considering that the base model has yet to be released. There is a segment of the audience that prefers to wait until a few years into the lifespan of a console, as the price will be lower and there will be more games available. Saying outright that the PlayStation 5 will receive a revision down the road makes it a harder sell to buy one at launch.

The PlayStation brand has seen incredible success over the years, to the point where it has outsold Nintendo in the home console market. The information that has been released about the PlayStation 5 so far suggests that it will be a powerful piece of hardware, so we can only wonder what plans Sony has for the inevitable PlayStation 5 Pro.
