Sony pulled out all the stops during their first PlayStation 5 reveal stream today. The showcase revealed over a dozen games coming to the next generation console including highly anticipated sequels like Horizon Zero Dawn 2: Forbidden West and Resident Evil VIII: Village. At the presentation's conclusion, Sony revealed 2 models of the PS5 that will be available this holiday season. Unfortunately, we still don't have any idea what the next-generation console will cost.

It was a strategic decision not to reveal the price, to be sure. Sony is in a delicate dance with Microsoft right now where neither company seems willing to tip their hand just yet. Price can be a significant determining factor this holiday season as parents try to determine which console to buy their kids for Christmas. What's more, players that have not already developed a loyalty to one console or the other may be swayed by a more attractive price tag.

Today's presentation was a celebration for next-gen and a huge hype moment for Sony. The game trailers were surprising and captivating and the reveal that the PS5 will be coming in 2 styles — a version with a disc drive and a "digital-only" version — definitely caught everyone's attention. Without a price confirmation, Sony is able to keep the conversation around the excitement of the PS5. Simply put, no matter what the price is, it likely won't be fun or exciting.

Industry analysts (and at least one leak) predict that the PS5 will cost $499 USD at launch, $100 more than the PS4 which launched at $399. The Xbox One also launched at $499, and given that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by more than double, rumors that Microsoft is planning to undercut the PS5 make a lot of sense.

Now that 2 different versions of the PS5 have been confirmed, we can expect tiered pricing. If this disc drive is the only difference between the two systems, it seems unlikely that there would be more than a $50 difference between the two consoles. That could mean either $499 and $549 or $499 and $449. On the other hand, Sony may be waiting to reveal the price because market conditions caused by the coronavirus pandemic are still changing. We'll learn more about the pricing of both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X soon.
